I did forget to include the Violent Femmes, Jesus and Mary Chain, the Pixies, Joan Jett, and XTC in the list of artists and bands I listen to. It's funny that Steve mentioned Throwing Muses -- I know factually they were formed in and did release a few albums in the '80s, but for some reason, I automatically associate them with the '90s. Maybe that has to do with how they were a late discovery for me and it was the later stuff that I heard first. Bands like the Jesus and Mary Chain and the Pixies I somehow associate more with the '90s, maybe because they seem to fit better into my perceptions of what the '90s represent for me than what the '80s do. I seem to associate bands like the Talking Heads, Ramones, and Blondie with the '70s CBGB's scene more than the '80s, even though they were all still active in the '80s (some longer than others). The Jam, X, and the Pretenders all have late-'70s roots too, so that's how I usually think of them. And dp, thanks for mentioning R.E.M. -- I can't forget I completely forgot them. _Murmur_ would be a desert island disc for me. I still can't get over the fact that I forgot XTC either. What the hell is up with that? (Nora, this is your cue to come out of lurking ). As for this new wave shit, i honestly didnt hear any of it until the mid-90s. I actually mostly listened to Old School rap in the 80s, which makes me feel old, to say that something "old school" was part of my childhood :( Craig, i love that you can rant about how much you love 80s metal bands on a liz phair list and then NP - the donnas. that made me smile. ok, i promise that's my last 80s post. :) steve NP - Alison Moyet "The Singles" (LOVE this collection!!!!!!!!!!!) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 31 Jan 2001 02:43:43 -0500 (EST) From: steve the dyke-tyke Subject: blake babies thing Baby Gets High...what is that? is that a cover? an evan dando song? or something? It got 3 and 1/2 stars, I say it should have been a 4. It's a great album, more folky then Liz, but the lyrics do remind me of her. It's gotten other great reviews here, and she's up for a Juno award in Canada, she is from Ontario, for best new artist (why couldn't the Grammies do this?). They are the Canadian version of the grammies. If you have this album and want to hear more of Sarah, you might try, say through Canadian book and music store Chapters, or HMV in Canada, ordering Weeping Tile's albums, that was her band before she went solo. They are Valentino, the easiest one to get, with a rumored US release, EeePee, and Cold Snap. Wonderful stuff, and EeePee has the original version of Basment Apt., the single for You Were Here. The band was more rock/pop, and is quite different from You Were Here. I beleive the address are Chapters.com, and HMV.com. I'm sure the Canadian listers will correct me if I'm wrong. A friend of mine sent me the WT albums is how i got mine. Emil Breton wrote: >Anyone remember the days when Matador would report >every move Liz was going to make? I will play the part of the Matador Liz reporter. In digest #28, Linds passed along the article about Liz performing at a VH1 party for "Julie Johnson" at the Sundance Film Festival. Why? Liz has contributed songs for the soundtrack to "Julie Johnson". Apparently, she is a *major* contributor to the soundtrack. According to my source, the songs are "brilliant", but song titles at this moment weren't available to my source. Liz was at Sundance to perform songs from the soundtrack. Unfortunately, I don't have the setlist of exactly what she performed (at least not yet). Will there be a tie-in to her next album? Will this list start talking about Liz again? Should I continue updating my site? I can hardly remember the 80's since I was a wee little kid, still learning how to read and such. But the only thing I remember ever listening to were Madonna, Debbie Gibson, and Michael Jackson. Hmmm....not bad for an elementary student huh? But then again, we have lovely VH1 that helps us revisit the 80's so often with their countdowns and Behind the Music.
