I've always really thought the Go-Go's were funny, mostly because in the video for "Vacation," you can see their "drummer" counting the beats as she "drums!" Long live the '80s!!!!! Other than the Replacements, Sonic Youth, Game Theory and a few more bands, plus the first Michael Penn and final 'Til Tuesday albums, I don't see much reason to look back... ;) Seriously, though, the '80s are likely the least represented decade in my music collection. I have a fair amount of stuff from the '60s and '70s and an incredible amount from the '90s, but very little from the decade of big hair and acid washed jeans. This is a good thing. :P Jase NP: Jon Brion, _Meaningless_ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 28 Jan 2001 08:05:11 -0500 From: Jason Long Subject: Re: major additions Ken (what's the frequency?) wrote: >Lots more to come, folks. Ken, I've been really enjoying the new additions to your site, particularly the articles you've transcribed and posted recently. It seems like with Liz news and articles, it's either feast or famine, and this has been a particularly slow time. It's been great to have a few new things to check out -- even if they're not recent, they're still unfamiliar and have been worth a look. I know that recently we had a discussion on the list along the lines of WCSE vs. Liz's earlier work. Here's a section from an article published in L.A. Weekly in 1998 that Ken just posted on his site: Still, just because Phair's fallen in love, gotten married and had a kid (son Nicholas, age 1*) doesn't necessarily mean her listeners have moved in that direction. Phair herself admits that any new fans she gains at this point aren't going to be the slacker-intellectual types that were with her at the beginning. "It's a different music now," she says, "so who'd be attracted to this album would be a different kind of person." Want to read the rest? So, out of curiosity, do people like the new songs? I'm glad she redid "hello sailor", and I have a feeling "love/hate transmission" will rock once I can actually hear what she's singing. I just hope the album isn't too overproduced, but it probably will be. I love the songs on "guyville" (and girlysound of course) when it's just liz and her fender. I'd love to see her record "you have no idea", "see the light", "that's the way I like it", and others in that solo style. I would be soooo happy if she records any of these concert-only songs on the new cd. Also, I think her next "album" after whatever (possibly)"An evening with" should be a collection of rare outtakes, such as cleaned up versions of the wcse session studio/ demos versions, whip-smart outtakes, and "guyville" outtakes. I remember reading that "whip-smart" was primarily throw away tracks from "guyville" with the exception oif a few new songs. That means there are completely different versions of the "ws" songs as well. Just a thought. If there were so many unreleased songs from "wcse", imagine how many there were from her first two albums. I think along with the release of the rare stuff, she should release "girlysound" at the same time (commercially of course). Also, Liz herself said that she had a library of about 50 girlysound songs that she goes into and takes things from. we've only heard 32. I also read in an interview that she had them all converted to DAT, which means she has superior quality versions. That's all I have to say. No one else replied to my post about the melodic similarities of "I know it's not easy" and "Go on Ahead". That's all, sorry for rambling, but ummm, yeah. - -Dan _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 28 Jan 2001 21:06:08 EST From: Breadnb@aol.com Subject: Liz at VH1 Premiere Party? De-Lurking for 2.5 seconds... I don't know if this is newsworthy or noteworthy, but I read this on E! Online... << Following the premiere of Julie Johnson, at the bash VH1 hosted for her at the Stag Lodge, star Courtney Love made a dramatic--surprise--entrance, looking pretty fly for a white girl in a shearling fur coat. (Rumor had it Love would be a no-show because of a lingering catfight with scheduled performer Liz Phair). She paused at deejay Paul Sevigny's booth to flip through his record collection before retreating to an upstairs alcove--no questions, no photos. >> Catfight, eh? Hmm... Back to lurking..
