I do believe LK is short for 'Latin Kings' a LA based (?) gang On another note, with all the discussion of WCSE going on I decided to listen to it again. Now its been prob a year or more since I sat down and gave it a spin. I tell you what, it sounds *better* now then when I first listened to it upon its release. Now don't get me wrong, its not EIG nor is it WS. It's different but I think I have more of an appreciation for it after not hearing it for awhile. Lyrically she blew me away again and musically well..I'm not a fan of slick production and I really didn't care for scott litt in that capacity (for REM fine, but not for Liz) but the whole album; her self harmonies, guitar layering, the almost hidden keyboard parts and the complexity really stood out this time. Truly Liz is writing from where she *was* then. Uncle Alvarez has to be one of the best songs ever. For those of you who haven't listened to it in a while...Do yourself a favor and listen to it again some quiet evening...it is a great album. LK stands for the Latin Kings, another gang here in Chicago. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Jan 2001 09:26:41 -0600 From: "christine m." Subject: liz in a gang In "Shitloads of Money" she says "big LK and the gangster >disciples..." I just put this together... gangster disciples is a gang that a friend of mine used to belong to. I'm assuming that the 'Big LK' refers to the Latin Kings. See how much I can learn when I grow up in a big city! Maybe Liz is really a secret underground drug lord, and this was her way of 'outting' herself? Are these 2 gangs big other places? Cause I hear about them in chicago. oh well. I love MSCL and thought that the episode with Juliana Hatfield was one of the best. It is the Christmas episode, and it's a very touching one. Her song in the show is "Make It Home." For any Juliana fans, you need to hear this song! It really is great. Just had to share! Since Louis can't think of who else with will take over, it's probably a big, fatty reference to America going to shit over the quest for money. j ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Jan 2001 16:57:56 EST From: RbSayre@aol.com Subject: Re: support-system-digest V4 #17 In a message dated 1/18/01 3:56:01 PM Eastern Standard Time, JJewelbaby@aol.com writes: > Her song in the show is "Make It > Home." It really is > great. the song is also on the Atlantic Records Xmas album "You Sleigh Me!", but really the My So-Called Life cd is so good that you can't go wrong with either. I think "Make it home" is my favorite Juliana song ever... I have this memory of hearing her play it during an in-store she did in Miami when she was opening for the b-52s. Count me in as another MSCL fan- i thought that episode was one of the best, right up there with the ep where Rayanne od'ed & Angela's mom came to the rescue. yeah they make me feel all warm & fuzzy. :) peace, rick listening to: ken burns jazz :-) truth is hard & tough as nails that's why we need fairy tales i'm all through with logical conclusions why should i deny myself illusions? -friedrich hollaender rick's web home ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Jan 2001 22:01:18 -0500 From: "Just Another Girl" Subject: Control Okay, so this is completely not Liz, but everyone was talking about Poe's Haunted when it came out, and I just got it. The first copy I got courtesy of the internet had the wrong version of Control, it was only 3:12 long and it ends abruptly, which clued me in to the fact that it's not the right length. Anyway, so I have the correct 6:00 version of Control now and I realized something: I liked the other version better! It has this great bass part in the beginning and it just sounds awesome. I like it so much better than the actual album version, I just wish it had an actual ending. But my point is, does anyone know anything about this shorter version of the song? I'm just really curious why it exists at all. So if someone could supply me with any info, I'd be grateful. I believe it's from the October 1998 issue of "In Style". It was taken at the "Lilith Rocks For Women's Health" in New York on July 14, 1998.
