(electronica?). I think Stories... is a really rich record, full of all the jarring time signatures and rave-ups that made her 1st LP so appealing to me. One argument I was going to make about Liz's recent attempts at mainstream-ism, is that PJ Harvey has done a much better job of doing the same thing. She printed her lyrics, has glossy photos inside the album, included an extensive list of thank yous, and has -- to an extent -- dumbed down her lyrics, or made them more accessible (whichever it is), yet I feel like this record is still really challenging, really rocking. She hasn't lost any of the stuff that appealed to me in the first place. (She hasn't gone Lilith.) I can't say the same about Liz. Stories..., despite all the proclamations that it's Harvey's "happy" record, or whatever, still feels dark and complex. I couldn't say that about whitechocolatespaceegg. I hate to write an off-topic post, so I'm trying to make a Liz connection while defending Stories... And I'm not one of those "PJ! Tori! Ani!" people, I just really like this record. Oh yeah, don't forget to catch Liz's segment Monday night at 10 p.m. on VH1's Top 100 Rock Albums of All Time. Exile is #96, so Liz will be on fairly early. It'll be interesting this time to see who they get to comment on it, and to hear what Liz has to say herself. Emil Get email at your own domain with Yahoo! It is sort of a joke because Krusty the Clown is offering advice to the pop stars, but here is what it says about Liz: Current Status: After the release of her classic 1993 debut Exile in Guyville, Phair looked set for a superstardom that never materialized. Disappointing follow-ups Whip-Smart and Whitechocolatespaceegg left Phair exiled in Lilith-ville. Fast approaching Where Are They Now territory. What Went Wrong: "Look honey, here's the thing. Your act, it's too girlie. People don't want songs about boys you have crushes on or pretty flowers. And don't start crying, either. I hate it when dames leak" Krusty's Advice: "You need a testosterone injection, but quick. A male singing partner is just the ticket. I happen to know that Herb is looking for new Peaches. Say the word and it's done." Ow ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V4 #14 ***********************************
