Ok, just wondering if anyone can answer this... not that it goes along with the "selling out" issue, which to add my opinion, its not a big deal really - she must have had good reason to do so. ..... but anyway, the question about WCSE...... I have a copy of WCSE on LP (thats those big round flimsy things).... have it because vinyl actually sounds better than cd... whip smart is incredible on vinyl... you can hear noises that you can't hear in the cassette or cd... but anyway... So the LP copy that I have is a 150 gram vinyl pressing, audiophile quality. My question is, Can anyone tell me why there is NO capitol logo, and NO mention of Capitol on it anywhere, nothing on the outer cover, the lyric/record sleeve (which the lyric layout is odd as hell and hard to figure out but oh well) and no mention on the lp itself. Only mentions Matador. Even has the "All Wrongs Reversed". Thought that wasn't on this album? I can't remember really... My copy on cd was lost a long time ago around christmas 99. I don't know much about whether Matador had any control over WCSE alone, which I didn't think they did... but if anyone can answer this I'd be satisfied. As for the info on the lp, it only says OLE 191-1 (C)1998 Matador Records, All Rights Reserved, All Wrongs Reversed. ........ and the website address is printed on the back of the outer cover: www.matador.recs.com any ideas? - -Michael (confused) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 06 Jan 2001 04:10:28 -0500 From: Jason Long Subject: Re: WCSE / Matador / Capitol question.... Matador had a special arrangement with Capitol, whereby on their joint releases, Capitol was responsible for distribution of both the cassette and CD formats, but Matador was solely responsible for distribution of the vinyl. Unsurprising, as most major labels see vinyl as being unprofitable, and Capitol in particular doesn't seem to press any vinyl at all at this point. As for the whole "selling out" and why Liz moved to Capitol thing... The explanation given by Billboard magazine at the time, taken from industry sources, was that with the collapse of the Matador-Capitol alliance, part of the settlement was that Matador got to keep all of their artists and masters, except for Liz, who went to Capitol, along with her catalog. Can't blame Capitol for wanting her either -- she's about the only artist on the label who would stand to make them any money, and after investing $20 million in Matador, I'm sure they'd like to see some return. If it had been a simple case of Liz jumping ship, the rights to her back catalog would have likely remained with Matador, who held the copyrights for those releases. Usually when artists leave one label for another, the rights to their previous works do not get transferred over as well. At this point, it's hard to say whether the move to Capitol will be a good thing for Liz or not -- she's going to be competing with a lot of bigger artists for promotional support from the label, along with up-and-comers, but at the same time, Capitol stands a better chance of breaking Liz to a wider audience than Matador does. I'm taking a wait-and-see attitude on this and am hoping that Liz will get whatever she wants out of this deal. The interview was about his book Rock Albums Of The 90's. He's been doing his Consumer Guide column for the Voice for 30+ years now, and it is always informative, even if you don't agree with all of his choices. The Guide takes albums, the best receive a grade of A+-B+, and a one paragraph review, honerable mention, a one line review (and in his book 1-3 stars) and Duds, which is just that (the book a dud is marked with a bomb symbal, or a full review with a turkey symbal next to it). The actuall column has dud of the month and Pick Hit, the best of the month, and is at villagevoice.com in the music section. It doesn't run every week, so do a search on him. Anyway in the interview one of the people that he'd selected for playing as a great example of alterative rock was Liz. His favorite song on WCSE is Go On Ahead,, and that's what was heard. And the interview closed out with Help Me Mary. Had lots of good things to say about Liz, and said how he got into her was that critc Ann Powers of the NY Times gave him EIG to listen to, and he loved it. I recomend his book, he's one of the few critics I really like and respect. You may not agree with him on everything he likes, especially if your a Radiohead or Jeff Buckley fan (he hates them, and I have to say agree with him, I've never gotten into them, and don't want to), but you will find him interesting, he will make you think. Some of the other people played, Pavement, and Wu-Tang Clan (which I liked, and I don't like rap too much). I wish I'd taped this show, I'm not sure if WC is archived, but try www.wxpn.org, Philly's WXPN is where the Cafe orignates, and you may find them there. I agree about the smugness on the Matador website, and their roster is certainly lacking in the goodness department these days, but I always thought the Liz/matador pairing was an infinitely cool one. I don't entirely disagree with the Matador bunch in their belief that Liz basically sold out. For those of you on the other side, think about how Liz has changed since the release of whitechocolate... Is a "professional" artist the same thing as an engaging/interesting one? Is it worth it to (for the most part) give up a unique guitar style and a terrific, trademark deadpan voice in favor of a Madonna-esque stage presence and conventional singing? I certainly don't want Liz and her family to starve, but musically speaking, Liz hasn't exactly maintained the strangeness that was so alluring to me on her first 2 records, and that's ultimately pretty disappointing. I would like to hear from Jason Long regarding this matter! Tab for "You Have No Idea," by the great Ray Lew: http://www-scf.usc.edu/~rlew/liz_phair/noidea.txt Lastly, Liz is included on YET ANOTHER VH1 Top 100 list (I say that as if it's a bad thing). She's actually included on this list, the Top 100 Greatest Rock Albums of All Time. Exile in Guyville comes in at 96. I understand why VH1 ranks Liz rather low (because they're VH1 and not www.nudeasthenews.com), but it's still annoying. I found this quote in a Usenet post and thought I'd paste it here because it's so true: "Great to see Liz Phair in there -- she's one of the greats. . . most people just don't realize it yet . . ."
