It is a very quirky line up this time. B& C won't win everything. Although if one does win, how embarrassing for the quality musicians on the list. As for Rock performance, anyone but Mellissa Ethridge, anyone. You don't want to hear this song, beleive me. I have never understood her appeal, she throws hysterics every time she opens her mouth or plays her guitar. She's just a star because everyone hopped on the bandwagon when she came out. You're suppose to love her because she's gay, if your gay, I'm gay and I Can't Stand Her. Andrea ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 4 Jan 2001 00:51:11 -0600 From: "sandra hume" Subject: who i am 1.) Who am I? I am Sandra, and I have been on this list for almost two years. I joined just before I saw Liz in Boston in 1999 -- three shows in three nights. I'm a currently unemployed Internet writer and editor who lived for 29 years in and around Boston before falling in love with a cattle rancher/ farmer from western Kansas. Now I live in Kansas and we're married, and I'm contemplating my next move career-wise. There aren't many options. I officially live in the middle of nowhere, at least 20 miles from being able to buy groceries. Thank God for the Internet. 2.) What other music do you listen to? A lot of my recent faves could be qualified as alt-country -- Wilco, Steve Earle, Ryan Adams, Whiskeytown, Uncle Tupelo, the Jayhawks, Slobberbone -- although I despise major-label country that gets played on radio stations everywhere. I absolutely adore the Old 97's, a band from Dallas, and I've been known to fly to Dallas to see them play when they're not on tour. And I love the alt-country scene. Damn, these people can play. A few steps to the side and you've got the rest -- unclassifiable good, listenable music with insightful lyrics, much of it by women. Beth Orton, Ani, Patty Griffin, Fiona, borderline Alanis, Ben Folds, Concrete Blonde, and of course Liz. I know I'm forgetting some. 3.) Your Top 5 albums of the 90s: I can't do lists. I can't. Not that winning a Grammy really means anything, but it would be nice to see real talent win for once. :) >>Female Rock Vocal Performance: ``Paper Bag,'' Fiona Apple; ``There Goes the Neighborhood,'' Sheryl Crow; ``Enough of Me,'' Melissa Etheridge; ``So Pure,'' Alanis Morissette; ``Glitter in Their Eyes,'' Patti Smith<< I have to say I only know the Sheryl Crow song here. Yay. Ok, so i'm sick of reading top 5 album lists...and im bored and burnt out from my first day of classes and need to not think about how hellish this week is going. hehe, so even though this isn't related to music really, how bout a best flix of 2000 list? I think there were so many great movies that came out last year, which is unusual--im not that big of a movie buff. here's my pix: 1. But I'm A Cheerleader - By far, my favorite "gay" movie ever. It's really tricky to do a comedy about queerness, and i get easily pissed off. But this movie totally pulled it off. It is really hard for me to not be offended by these kinds of movies, but this just had my laughing hysterically. The story line is great, the cast is wonderful, and the gorgeous Tattle Tale song is reason enough for this movie to be in my #1 slot :) Drawbacks: i like RuPaul now. 2. Dancer in the Dark - What can I say? Bjork gives the best performance of the year, period. This movie will get under your skin. You will cry. You will have nightmares for weeks to come. The scariest part is that it's just so damn real and totally points out how fucked up things are. A lot of people said the direction was bad, but i thought it was simply brilliant. Loaded with symbolism, fantasy, and funtastic musical numbers, this movie is a must-see. Drawbacks: i can no longer listen to "Selmasongs" without feeling uneasy. 3. Chicken Run - The best children's movie ever! Strong female lead heroine who doesn't risk her life for some guy (where can you find that in disney?), and to top it off, it's totally pro-vegetarian. But beyond all that, the movie can be used as a metaphor for any oppressed group. Drawbacks? the chickens are creepy looking, and mel gibson does the voice of one (but, appropriately, he plays a cock.) 4. What Lies Beneath - Once in awhile, mainstream hollywood comes along with a movie that completely fucking surprises me (e.g., Thelma and Louise, Fried Green Tomatoes...) I did not expect this to be one of them. I actually did not want to see this movie at all! The ads made it seem like it was some obnoxious remake of one of those misogynist michael douglas movies from the 80s. But, to my surprise, this movie turned out to have some pretty damn good sisterhood themes. Michelle Pfeiffer is great, and the movie is actually pretty damn creepy, in a classic Hitchcock sorta way. I liked it so much I saw it twice, and liked it even better the second time. Drawbacks? Tends to drag on at some points...really long movie. 5. Best In Show - I actually liked this better than Waiting for Guffman. Great ensemble cast (including two of my favorites - parker posey and catherine o'hara). The scene in the "doggy toy store" is as classic as the "interview at DQ" scene in guffman. Drawback: As was the case w/ Guffman, not enough Parker! :) 6. Pitch Black - I think sci-fi movies are lame. This wasn't, which is why i am including it here. even though they're stuck on some random planet, contemporary social issues are still brought up, which caught me off guard. I really fucking liked this movie, and i really like the lead actress (rhada mitchell? is that her name?) I swear, i thought she was juliana hatfield. Has anyone seen the movie High Art? i have not yet, but i found out she is in it, and so is Ally Sheedy. I always thought ally sheedy looked/talked like juliana in "The breakfast club." So during the love scenes in High Art, is it like watching juliana have sex with juliana? too bizzare. ANYWAYS, pitch black = cool. Drawbacks: It has the scary guy from All Over Me in it. 7. Gladiator - Russell Crowe and Joaquin Pheonix in the same film. Enough said. Haha, seriously though, I really REALLY dislike "epic" films. I think they are boring and too fucking predictable. I think this movie broke that traditional structure, and i respect it for that. Plus, any "epic" that can hold my attention, well, it deserves mentioning;) Plus, gorgeous soundtrack w/ vocals by Lisa Gerrard of Dead Can Dance. Drawbacks: no nudity...I was waiting for Russell and Joaquin to mud wrestle. ;) 8. The Opportunists - Ok, this movie sucked. But, whatever,it fed my Cyndi Lauper obsession, if only for a few seconds. it had some pretty cool themes overall, but it was just really slow and boring. and not enough cyndi...she really had a minor role. she should act more... Drawbacks: Christopher walken is scary and he's not playing a monster. 9. The Cell - Not totally terrible, but not very good either. I'm including it here because i think jennifer lopez is a wonderful actress. I really wish she would stick to it and give up the britney spears thing. Oh well. Also, vince vaughn is muh boy. yum. And there were other gorgeous visuals in this movie. I guess i just like fantasies. Drawbacks: while there are some beautiful visuals, there are also some pretty downright repulsive ones. this is not for anyone who has a weak stomach! i can't think of a tenth movie. Disappointments for me: The Virgin Suicides, Blair Witch 2 (what the hell was that?!) Still haven't seen Requiem for a Dream (trent...it's still playing), I'm the One that I Want, or Psycho Beach Party...really want to though.... So yeah. sorry that was so long. i wanna hear what everyone else liked...im in a renting mood. :) steve ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 4 Jan 2001 22:06:51 EST From: RbSayre@aol.com Subject: Re: pj / movies...warning, long ;) In a message dated 1/4/01 9:50:04 PM Eastern Standard Time, sgriffes@umich.edu writes: > wait... are you kidding? i've *never* seen Lopez evidence any sort of... i dunno, depth. I do, however, like your list otherwise- I loved But I'm a Cheerleader!-. you even convinced me to give Gladiator a try, even without a nude Russell. re: dancer in the dark... even without having seen it, but knowing what the story is about makes "i've seen it all" have such an amazing effect on me with every listen. it would be impossible for me to list my favorite movies of the year, but i'd have to list Timecode, Almost Famous, High Fidelity, Chuck & Buck, and Best in Show. I loved Laura Linney's performance in You Can Count on Me and Christian Bale's in American Psycho. I personally liked The Virgin Suicides, which i felt stayed very true to the novel. However, for me, the best movie of the year hands down was Waking the Dead. But I'm A Cheerleader - By far, my favorite "gay" movie ever. I liked this movie a lot, too, but I don't think I would put it on my top 10. Camp is my favorite thing EVER (priscilla queen of the desert, ABBA-Gold, and Valley of the Dolls are a few of my favorite things...), and I think that this film did a good job, as far as that goes. But the fact that people compared this to the MASTER of camp, John Waters, made the movie a bit of a let down for me. It wasn't all that I thought it would be, but it still was quite good. And Natasha Lyonne is, once again, wonderful. > > 2. Dancer in the Dark - What can I say? Oh. My. God. Freaking unbelievable movie. I don't agree with all the critics who say that this is a masterpiece-it's far too uneven for that. But Bjork's performance is astounding. No wonder she got the 2 golden globe nods (one was for acting, the other for selmasongs, a great CD). It tore me apart. I saw it twice and cried like a little girl each time. I both hate Lars von Trier for putting me through that and love him for his storytelling ability. > 4. What Lies Beneath - Once in awhile, mainstream hollywood comes along > with a movie that completely fucking surprises me eeeehhh. I dunno about this movie. I liked it, sure, but Harrison's monologue in the middle (the *special* monologue, if those who saw it know what I mean) was far too cliche for me. It almost ruined the whole thing. But Zemeckis' direction and the effects were great. > 7. Gladiator Loved the fight sequences and the obvious camp aspect, but the incest made me queasy. > Disappointments for me: The Virgin Suicides I got this on DVD for Christmas, and it was...all right. I don't think it totally did justice to the book, but Air's score for the movie ("Playground Love" is an unbelievable track) and Sophia's -direction-, not necessarily the writing, was really good. I'm like that with movies. If the direction is good, I'll like it. It doesn't even matter about the plot. > Still haven't seen Requiem for a Dream (trent...it's still playing), I'm > the One that I Want, or Psycho Beach Party...really want to though.... My god, I saw the trailer for Psycho Beach and now I want to see it sooooooo much. There's the whole funny-gay-campy-thing, then Nicholas Brendan is in it, which makes it even better. I can't wait! > So yeah. sorry that was so long. i wanna hear what everyone else > liked...im in a renting mood. :) Okay...so here I go :) First, there's the Fight Club. I liked this not just for the Delaware nod (reprazentin'), but the gritty, fast paced feel. And as much as I think that Brad Pitt is a pretty-boy, he can act his ass of. Which he does in this movie. The whole action/blood thing is a biggie for me, too, and this film delivers. Oh, & Meatloaf has boobs. :) I know its incredibly 5th grade of me, but it is heeelarious! wheee! Okay, if you're into gay movies (which you obviously are, you dyke-tyke, you!), THE one to see is _Show Me Love_. Released in its native Sweden under the title _Fucking Amal_, its all about the relationship between two girls: the lonely, lovelorn Agnes and the school pretty girl, Elin. Its incredibly touching and real, and leaves you with a fuzzy feeling akin to the one that _Cheerleader_ does. Plus, the movie was only second to Titanic in the box office in Sweden. And its one of the girl-A*Teens' fave movies. Which has to say something :) The only drawback is is that its hard to find on video. Drive Me Crazy. Okay, as much as _Drive Me Crazy_ SUCKED, it had the Donnas in it. So go rent it for them. The _Get Rid Of That Girl_ video is super cute. American Psycho is another good one, and it has gay-points: Guin Turner co-wrote. Christian Bale should get some sort of recognition for his work in this movie. He was great. Oh, even if you've already seen it, go rent Boogie Nights again! I ADORE this film, and its been occupying my DVD player for days now. The directors commentary is priceless...PTA is a fucking god. That's all I have to say. Beyond The Valley of the Dolls. Why? Cos Patty Duke is a hottie, that's why. Oh, one last one would be _Taxi Driver_. Just your normal story of dementia and obsession-what's not to love? I am a huge film geek, so you;re gonna have to excuse me for my spiel on the subject. Bye bye all. xoxoxox anastasia ps. less than 3 weeks till the Donnas new rock n roll explosion. go to www.thedonnas.com to download their first single "40 Boys In 40 Nights", or just to look at the slick cover photo on the main page. now. i mean it. grrr ;) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 4 Jan 2001 22:56:23 EST From: Jeska377@aol.com Subject: Miss Matador So by the way, does anyone know why Liz left Matador?
