(note to self: CMT is the best channel on cable; allison's video for 'send me an angel', with its implied tribute to the figure of gram parsons, is just one reason why. the incredibly high babe-quotient on that channel is another). - - The Go-Betweens: The Friends of Rachel Worth recorded in part with sleater-kinney backing them up, this is the first Go-Betweens album in a long time, and most of their fans had given them up for dead (career-wise, anyway). but this is a great album regardless. - - High Fidelity: the movie i know some people will think this is cheating, but i prefer to see it as thinking outside the box. this movie gave me the same feeling a great album gives me, and now with dvd i can watch it whenever i want. note to all: the dvd contains a few scenes not in the movie, including one of the best scenes from the book, where cusack is summoned to a wealthy woman's home to take away, for $50, her husband's priceless collection of rare singles (the sex pistols on virgin, etc.). plus, it featured the cover of whitechocolatespaceegg on display in the record store, and they included the opening of 'baby got going' in the movie. honorables: pearl jam: binaural, cadallaca: out west, reissued nick drake (yeah, i know, he died 25 years ago and people are buying his stuff now because of a VW commercial -- guilty as charged). also, i would've included macy gray's album in my top-10, but it came out last year so i dis-qualified it. and, finally, bravo to whoever listed velocity girl's 'simpatico' as one of the top-10 of the 90's. i don't think i'd list it *that* high, but it's always great to see such a terrific record being recognized, even in our small world. they're from arlington, va., btw, for any of the dc'ers on the list who didn't already know that. well, they WERE from arlington. they don't exist as a band anymore, of course. 'i can't stop smiling' remains one of my favorite videos ever, although there's no way i could ever explain why. o ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Jan 2001 23:04:06 EST From: HOLEPARTS@aol.com Subject: my survey i guess i may as well give this a shot, lol. i know i've run into conflict with my taste of music in the past, so please let me live! Who am I? Mike, a sophomore in High School (although Nina must have thought i was 25- she thought i was cute which blows my mind!) What other kinds of music do you listen to? I'm big into rock (good rock). I can't stand rap. Its just words to a beat, and i get headaches listening to it. I also dont like country. I can't stand new rock, either. I'd rather run out and buy a britney spears album than listen to Korn, Bizkit, or Kid Rock. That's NOT rock in its finest form. That is filth (lol). Besides rap/rock, i really dont even like this new rage of LA bands like Incubus, Papa Roach, Disturbed, and all that stuff... I miss mid 90s radio that wasnt afraid to go out and be brave, play something really revolutionary. I remember a time when i could turn on the radio and hear Liz, PJ Harvey, Tori, Juliana, Veruca Salt, (radio has pretty much stopped playing all the great chick rock that really definded the decade. i still hear my favorite guy bands). Im really into early-mid 90s stuff (Nirvana, Hole, STP, PJ, PJ Harvey, Soundgarden, Liz- all that great stuff) Top Ten albums of the 90's 1.) Hole - Live Through This (anything Courtney) 2.) Nirvana - In Utero 3.) Hole - Celebrity Skin 4.) Liz Phair - Exile in Guyville/Whip Smart 5.) Tori Amos - From The Choirgirl Hotel 6.) Veruca Salt - American Thighs/8 Arms 2 Hold U 7.) Pearl Jam - Yield 8.) STP - Tiny Music/Core/Purple 9.) Anything Else Nirvana/Hole (Incesticide, My Body The Hand Grenade) 10.) Should he choose to accept it, he'll have to get out of his current deal at Sony. << andy slater produced fiona's 'tidal' and has produced or co-produced the more recent wallflowers' work. he's also reported to have been peter buck's college roommate, but who knows? if this move were to happen, it would seem like a reasonably good fit for liz, but you can never tell. >>Andy Slater is now recognized as one of the quality managers/producers in the music industry. He now manages three top artists: The Wallflowers, Macy Gray, and Fiona Apple. According to Marc Pollack, "Slater operates in a rarefied realm where artist development and commitment are the rule, not the exception." (HITS 3.17.00) He concentrates on the artist and helps that artist find his/her unique voice. In an industry that is driven by hits, Slater's philosophy is markedly different. Slater explains, "It all goes back to the writing. I don't think any of the three artists were interested in making pop records at the time. As a producer, I look at making records the way that I listen to catalog albums. Older records were about taking a journey. On Fiona's first release, the album took her places in terms of her personality, and it's the same thing with Macy. If you make a record that has emotional and sonic depth, it takes a while to reach the public before you have that breakthrough single."
