I've been meaning to post this for several days now, but I just got my new computer and have been busy transferring all my files from the old one to the new one. The copy I ordered of the Minty Fresh anthology finally arrived in the mail last week and even though it is a little pricy, being a Japanese import, it is well worth the cost to have "Carnivore" on CD. I don't know who did the mastering job, but they need to be commended. Never has this song sounded so good -- it's a lot more "punchier" sounding than the vinyl single, and it suits the song well. I've been compulsively listening to it over and over since the disc arrived. I don't know if anyone's ever posted these before, but there are some liner notes in the CD, written by Jim Powers, one of the label's founders. Here's what he wrote about "Carnivore": MF-4 LIZ PHAIR Carnivore / Carnivore (Raw) Liz and I met when she was recording "Exile In Guyville" at Brad Wood's Idful Studio. I stopped by and Brad played some rough tracks from the record. They were some of the most immediate and engaging sonds I could recall ever hearing. Months later, when the label was starting, Liz graciously offered us an exclusive track for a 7". It was extremely helpful in broadening awareness about Minty Fresh and it's still gratifying to have the work of one of our favorite songwriters on the label. Yea Liz. Carnivore (Raw) is essentially a demo. We hung a mike over Liz's guitar amp, gave her a vocal mike, and then Liz played through the song a couple of times. Raw, indeed. In the CD booklet, there's also a one-page reproduction of the single's cover, which is one of my favorite pictures of Liz. If anyone's been thinking of getting this disc, don't hesitate -- it's well worth the cost, and hey, there's a couple of good songs by Veruca Salt and the Sugarplastic on it as well. You owe it to yourself to pick it up. Also, I finally heard "Misfortune," the theme song from Cursed. The other night while we were chatting on IRC, fellow list member Nora sent it to me (thanks again!). Great win-win situation: I didn't have to watch what from all reports sounds like a godawful show, yet I still got to hear the theme, which I think is pretty darn good, as far as these things go. Even if Liz's name hadn't appeared in the credits of the show, if I had happened upon it, I have no doubt in my mind I would have immediately recognized her as being the vocalist. It just serves as a reminder of how distinctive her voice really is. Also, the laugh she gives at the end is another dead giveaway -- anyone who's ever heard any of Liz's radio interviews could recognize her laugh anywhere. Still meaning to post my list of favorite albums of the year, but I haven't found the time yet. Hopefully soon, though, even if Nora's list pretty much makes mine completely redundant. Not only is she my evil twin, but we seem to buy all the same albums. ;) Also, as of tomorrow, I will have a new e-mail address. I'm finally moving out of the dark ages of dial-up and getting cable internet installed. I'll likely keep this account open for a little bit longer, so if anyone needs to write to me, they can still send it here, but I'll post my new e-mail address as soon as I know it. Um, I think that's it. Cheers, Jase NP: "Carnivore" ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V3 #336 ************************************
