I sent them to Jason in July and just recently refound 'em in my SENT box. So I thought I'd send 'em to the list in case anyone is interested. Just got my PJ Harvey tix! And in the next few weeks I'm also seeing Aislers Set, Magnetic Fields, and Comet Gain! - ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Sassy, June 1993, p. 34 LIZ PHAIR, Exile in Guyville (Matador) 5 out of 5 rating Liz Phair is a total diva. As the kind of annoying title suggests, this album tells the woes of an unlucky-in-love tough girl. Her delivery is very droll and a lot of the music sounds like bouncy Marshall Crenshaw-esque pop. It's a really cool combination. The satirical lyrics are so great, I feel like reprinting them all, but I can't 'cause she uses a lot of curses. Here are some, though. In "Divorce Song," one cannot help but sing along to the the slightly illogical yet very on-target words: "And it's true that I stole the lighter/and it's also true that I lost the map/but when you said that I wasn't worth talking to/I had to take your word on that." "Shatter" is all about obsession (a recurring theme on this record): "I don't know if I could drive a car fast enough to get to where you are." You can tell these songs were written by a really smart girl, because she manages to make them sarcastic and poetic and pained all at the same time. Christina - --- Sassy, October 1994, p. 38 LIZ PHAIR, Whip-smart (Matador/Atlantic) 4 out of 5 rating You have to really listen to Liz Phair to appreciate her genius. At first I felt that this record made inadequate, even grating background music. But when I finally sat down and focused on the lyrics, I was totally impressed. Liz is so smart and funny and tough. Like Exile in Guyville, her second record is inspired by boys and all their implications for a hormonally driven feminist. "Super Nova" is a poppy, pleasant track about the cutest boy in the world, while "Support System" questions the need for one. And this time around, her conversational, dead-on realistic depictions of relationships are much more poetic. I was blown away by this line from the totally original and catchy "Whip-smart": "I'm gonna lock my son up in a tower /Till I write my whole life story on the back of his big brown eyes." In "X-Ray Man," she describes the subject as having "Whitewall tires /Iodine tan /Cheap unpleasant desires." Leonard Cohen, eat your heart out. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Nov 2000 19:07:45 -0500 (EST) From: steve the dyke-tyke Subject: Re: support-system-digest V3 #317 Dan-- I didnt go see Nina tonight.
