I would really recommend that you stay clear of the Memorex drives--they have a really bad repair record. The consensus among techie folks is that Plextor makes the best drives. Plextors are rebranded as a LOT of other makers' drives, too. After Plextor, Yamahas are good as well. I've had two Philips drives, and never had a problem, but their track record isn't the best. I've gotten to the point with computer gear where I try to stay as economical as possible, but I stay away entirely from the cheapest option. I know it's an irritating saying, but I think it really applies to computer stuff: Get something of high quality the first time, and you only cry once. Buy the cheapest and you cry many times later. My 2 cents. Did anyone MP3 the theme to "Charmed?" I've missed some digests. It has worked out great... Some general advice... Rewriting ability is not so important. I've burned dozens of discs and never have rewritten. Rewritable discs are relatively expensive compared to one time use discs and rewritable discs cannot be used as audio CDs (if you want to be able to play them someplace other than your computer). So I would look to see if could get a faster plain CD-R drive than a slower CD-WR drive in the same price range. Also having two drives can be nice... If you want to do mix Cds, you can burn disc to disc rather than loading all the tracks on to your hard drive (although I find it is more reliable to burn form files on the hard drive). So you might consider getting an external drive for that reason (but they do cost a bit more). One other thing to keep in mind is that you'll probably want about a gig of free space on your hard drive... audio files are big! mike ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 22 Nov 2000 12:33:34 -0600 From: "sandra" Subject: software for burning Hey Jase For software, you'll want to consider Easy CD Creator and Take Two, both by Adaptec. (A few months ago, they were PC Mag's editor's choice.) They cost about $70-$80 together for the suite. My husband, Matt, uses them exclusively. Very user-friendly, drag and drop. Great for burning audio CDs as well as backing up your system. Generally, use Disc at Once vs. Disc at Once to avoid two-second gaps. For level matching, you might not find it in this software, but Matt's fairly certain that there is shareware out there that will allow that. If you have any more specific questions, Jase, email me personally. Matt makes CDs by the bagful and he could probably give you any help you need. sandra ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V3 #316 ************************************
