I just wish the show >was good enough to warrant a Liz Phair theme song. ...unfortunately, liz and steven have been banished to filler taking up space while i wait patiently for will & grace. i admit, i go and do other things during that half hour. I'd be insanely appreciative if anyone could help me out. thanks, judy ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 Nov 2000 08:11:15 -0800 (PST) From: erin c Subject: Liz In A Book... Hey guys! i was just on Amazon.com and I was looking for a guitar chord book and I remebered somewhere hearing about a Liz Phair "Whip Smart" guitar tabs book... So I looked Liz up to find it, and to my utter amazement I found a book called, "The Last Rock Star Book or : Liz Phair, a Rant by Camden Joy HOLY SHIT!!! So cool! I have orderd the book and it's on it's way to my house. Along with the Whip Smart tabs... Camden Joy...Smart guy. Here's what it says the book is about... Camden Joy's hero can charm landladies, but he can't seem to wrap up the quickie biography of rock star Liz Phair he's been commissioned to write. Instead, the shaky author finds himself caught up in recounting the troubled events that mark his own life. His ex-girlfriend (who just might be the illegitimate daughter of dead Rolling Stone Brian Jones); the rock star (whom he's never met); and a mystery girl in an old newspaper photo all start to blur together. If only he could get closer to his subject, before the assignment spins out of control, maybe he'd have a shot at the distinction he deserves.... Hilarious and compelling, The Last Rock Star Book offers both an engrossing read and a powerful meditation on celebrity and obsession. *************************************** Detour Magazine, September 1998 "The Last Rock Star Book traces the downward spiral of a morally suspect slacker, also named Camden Joy. Following an unwanted break-up with his girlfriend, the lovably dizzy Shaleese (who believes her father was Rolling Stones bad-boy Brian Jones), Camden is hired by schlock publisher Gabriel Snell to write a quickie "where is she now?" bio of Phair.... Daunted both by the assignment and his going-nowhere life in Iowa--vividly portrayed in hilarious yet poignant flashback scenes of teenage sex, drugs, rock and roll, and petty crime--Camden grows increasingly obsessed with Phair's music. Acting out of desperate bravado, Camden steals his landlady's car and journeys to Chicago to confront Phair and his own personal demons. [Joy's] casually complex musings on identity, fame, and art are fueled by the visceral kick and emotional wallop of great rock music." I had no idea this even existed! Did anone else know about this, or am I just a very latecomer? Haha, that could be it...I'm always late, gotta be better. Later everyone, Erin **"I have looked all over the place, but you have got my favorite face..." Elizabeth Clarke Phair __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Erin writes: << I had no idea this even existed! Did anone else know about this, or am I just a very latecomer >> I actually ordered this book a while ago, and it was pretty good. The only thing is that its not that much about Liz and more of the author jumping around his childhood memories. The book itself is very fragmented, going back and forth between 3 different time frames (which are only "shown" by the different fonts he uses), but its good. Deliciously sick. Not for the queasy. One cool/funny thing is the first 50 pages or so have a different drawing of Liz (by Joy himself), depicting her childhood. Like the time she went for Halloween as the statue of liberty. Its odd. One thing about the book might offend some Liz fans though: He makes one point very clear: he has no friggin clue who she is. (At least when he started out to write the bio.) And he doesn't just say it, he dwells and dwells and pretty much compares her to every other female singer of the early to mid-nineties. ("was she the tall blond one with the cleavage? Or was she the one who told everyone to "suck her left one?") Some might consider it insulting. So if you're into memoirs, you'll prolly like this book all the more. Enjoy your purchase, Erin. You weren't all that late and wrong. I actually have been meaning to post about the same thing but haven't gotten around to it. ana ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V3 #308 ************************************
