I've seen them a few times and have some signed stuff too. I was an Uncle Tupelo fan near the end and think that after they split the fans got a better deal as both Wilco and Son Volt are worthy bands in their own right. I have a tape of Jeff doing a solo version of Gun on a UK radio station, just wish i knew where it was! The full story of that day cannot be revealed! Am i the only one to think they they were the highlight of the Mermaid Avenue albums and that Bragg was over-rated? Chipko "and i wonder how i've come to know so much less than i knew before" ... (then again, i am a total yoko ono freak, which is what pj's screams tend to sound like) yeah, the new album is great. more details after i get to listen to it a bit more:) steve ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Oct 2000 09:39:27 -0500 From: "sandra" Subject: wilco - affirmative i adore wilco. seems i've heard that a dream pairing for collaboration would be jeff tweedy (wilco singer) and liz. seen them live twice. was wilco's show in 1999 that made me feel as close as i felt to seeing liz that year. sandra ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Oct 2000 08:40:28 -0700 (PDT) From: Matt Schulz Subject: Wilco Wilco is one of my favorite bands. If you've never seen them live, you absolutely should. I've seen them four times -- including this past summer at the Fillmore in SF -- and they are always very entertaining. If you're gonna get a Wilco disc, you should start with Being There. An absolutely astonishing disc. Then, get Summer Teeth. Another spectacular disc, but completely different in every way from Being There. The Anodyne and No Depression albums by Uncle Tupelo - -- which spawned Wilco -- are great, too. Anyway, sorry. I usually hate these off-topic tangents, but when Wilco's mentioned, I gotta speak up. I don't know whether this has already been said (I've been skimming posts as of late), but Sleater Kinney has announced that they are going on hiatus until fall 2002. I read it on krs.com. It really sucks. I picked up _all hands on the bad one_ a little over a month ago, mostly b/c of all the buzz that this list gave em. I dont think theyve left my CD player since then. Theyre friggin amazing, and since I'm all late and wrong (YET AGAIN), I missed them on tour. Blah. Oh well. :( Anastasia ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Oct 2000 16:55:17 -0400 From: valerieb@mindspring.com Subject: 'member me? hey kids...i've been lurking. things in my life have been a little crazy (it's been a bit much, really), but i'm on my way out of the abyss, and happy to be with y'all. so our local music rag http://www.stompandstammer.com/ has a great cover story on aimee mann. it's available at the site. i have four copies of the hard copy in my car, which also includes articles on list faves bettie serveert and barbara manning. i must share the love. to feed my fragile little ego, the first four list members who can email me the names and artists of four songs that have the name "valerie" in the title or lyrics each get a copy. and jen lott...wilco *rules*! (how very 80's...) get into them, it's a good thing. i'm also a big fan of "being there", although it makes me sad for some reason. vjb ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Oct 2000 21:10:22 EDT From: HOLEPARTS@aol.com Subject: i met nina gordon hi guys! guess what??? you may have heard from pam, kate, or audrey already, BUT I MET NINA!!! it was so cool! she was playing her first show at the house of blues in chicago, so my friends and i got out of school early and headed down there (kate was SOOOO cool - she drove all the way from michigain to see nina and to give us a ride to the show - she must be the nicest forsythian i know). well, we got there and had to wait for a while before they let us in. once we got in, we found good spots (relatively close to the stage; we were on the side- the over 21 side, even tho we arent 21...). anyways, nina came on and she looked so awesome. she really is beautiful you guys- maybe a tad but too skinny, but absolutely gorgeous. she was wearing all purple, and she played a pretty short set. it included: fade to black, now i can die, new years eve, got me down, bad way, and horses in the city as the encore. im guessing that it was kind of a prep show, just to make sure that the band is in place, playing right, making sure things sound good, so that everyone thing is ok for the tour. that is also probably why it was free. my friends made a sign for nina, and it read "shimmer shimmer like a girl should" and they held it up. by mistake i guess nina thought that we expected her to sing "shimmer like a girl", and she said she wasnt ready for that yet, but that in a month she will. before that i yelled "loneliness is worse" and she said that in a month she'd be ready to play that song too. i could totally tell that she was looking at me- im pretty tall, and i knew all of the words. my friends and i were really the only pple that knew the words to the new nina cd (they are lots shorter than me tho.... lol). she kept looking at me and grinning, i could tell she was flattered that people knew the words to her new album. anyways, here is the cool part! she was taking part in a signing! so kate, me, audrey, grayson and pam got out as fast as we could so that we could get in line to get nina's autograph. all of a sudden this guy brought these barricades and tried to set them down in front of us so that we wouldnt be able to get in the signing line, but we just kind of pushed our way through anyways. im glad we did, because everyone on the other side had to wait a long time! anyways, when we reached the table, nina was soo cool to us. one of the first things she said as to me: "hey- i could see you! you're tall and you knew all the words!". i was like yeahhh! i told her that she did really good, but she seemed kind of dissapointed in how she did - she didnt think she played a good show, but she really did. i gave her the presents that i got her - a teddy bear with NINA spelled on it, and a scented candle. she fell in love with the bear, i felt so special. everyone else got her gifts too. she really appreciated it. she talked to us for like, 15 minutes. this guard guy kept telling us to move along, but we ignored him and so did nina. this may sound kind of rude but i didnt give a shit about the people behind me. i was so selfish- i wanted to stay there as long as i could, and nina apparently really wanted to talk to us because she didnt stop - she was so nice!!! i asked her if her favorite color was purple, and she said yes - i was so relieved cus everything i got her was purple. she signed our CD's after a while, and she took a photo with us. i was right by her! my arm was around her! my hair was touching her hair! it was so incredible. she gave all of us hugs before we left, and told us that she wanted to see us again - she even let us know of a way to get to see her at another show. she said that she would let us in with her if she saw us. im pretty sure that she'll remember us since it is the first show she did- i really hope that we made it a great day for her, cus she sure made it an awesome day for us! once again kate, i cant thank you enough for your generosity! u really are one of a kind, and a damn good driver!!!! mike ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V3 #288 ************************************
