And it didn't stop. >The album that I had heard so much hype from - I heard soo many rave >reviews about how it is the most innovative thing which could Possibly >Maybe change music forever - turned out to be a well put together >collection of sounds that I heard back in 95. I think those very raves are the reason why I, even as a Radiohead fan of sorts (I prefer _The Bends_ to anything else they've done and love it, and I'm not as big on _OK Computer_ as most people but still like it), am leery of buying it. Whenever any album attracts that many advance raves and is treated like the Second Coming, I now know based on past experiences that I'm more than likely going to be disappointed. Based on some of the reviews, I do have to wonder if the album is being applauded for its actual quality or just because they decided to take even more risks with this album and are venturing into even more uncommercial territory. And well, maybe I'll seem a little too jaded right here, but even as someone who in theory would love for an album that could change music forever to be released, I just don't expect that to ever happen. I mean, what hasn't already been done before or would at least have roots in something that's been done before? Even some of the music that really moves me the most emotionally or that I simply enjoy listening to for its sound is fairly derivative. For example, one of the bands whose sound I love is Elastica -- now think back to the Stranglers, Wire, The Jam and The Fall and try to tell me that they're reinventing the wheel. They're not, but they do combine their influences into a sound I find really appealing and they are damn good songwriters. Well, plus the fact that Justine Frischmann has a great rock-and-roll voice. Speaking of Elastica, I'm almost glad that a lot of the reviews of their new album were lukewarm. _The Menace_ is actually really great, and by having lowered expectations, it was a pleasant surprise that it's as good as it is. I do think that some reviewers had a bone to pick with Elastica, though -- the common theme in the reviews seems to be, "Heh, it took you five years to come up with this? Your sound hasn't advanced or changed enough to warrant that amount of time spent." They don't seem to be judging the album on its own merits, just the fact that having had so much time away, they should have reinvented themselves. Although at the same time, that logic is stupid anyway. They have changed more than these critics have given them credit for. I can't be the only one who listens to "My Sex," "Human" or "The Way I Like It" and thinks that there's no way they could have even attempted songs like these on their first album. Also, keyboards play a much bigger role in their sound now than before, which is another change from their old stuff. As for Radiohead, many of the bands you name-checked in your review of the album (Massive Attack, This Mortal Coil, Air, Bjork, Tricky) are ones that ultimately leave me cold, which makes me even more gunshy to check out the new album. I don't know, but I've never really developed much of an appreciation for those artists' styles. I just can't work up the same sort of passion for them that comes naturally to me for artists like Aimee Mann or Jen Trynin. I think a few of my biases come to light right there: I seem to prefer music that's centered more on guitars, but with pop hooks and a strong melodic sense rather than rhythmic; also, lyrics seem to be a big part of the overall package for the artists I'm drawn to, while for the artists you mentioned, the music seems to be more dominant. (Not that there aren't exceptions; in terms of artists who I love more for their sound than their lyrics, Beck immediately springs to mind. I have no clue what he means most of the time, but I enjoy his music so much that I don't even really care or stop to think about it.) Now veering off into other directions... For those who may be interested, a couple of heads-ups. First, Elastica will be appearing on Conan O'Brien's show on Friday night. Second, anyone on the list who likes Amy Rigby (Jimmy, Steve Kisko, and Steve Griffes immediately come to mind) should check out her new album, _The Sugar Tree_. I've only listened to it a few times, but I think it may just be her best yet. Also, it seems a little less "twangy" than her old stuff. Thanks to Al and Vasant for recently recommending the new Go-Betweens. I had made a note to myself a couple of months ago to buy it as soon as it was out, but had totally forgotten about it until it was mentioned here. I just picked it up on the weekend and it's a great disc -- easily among the best I've heard this year. I swear, one of these days I will finish my review of the mix I received in the tape swap; as it stands, I've got it about half finished. I may just review a side at a time so I can at least get part of it posted right away. Also, I had some pretty amazing experiences seeing both Sleater-Kinney and Elastica within the past couple of weeks and am going to try to post about those shows at some point -- who else has had Justine Frischmann dance practically right beside them lately or have her recommend albums for them to check out? And I've gotta say, she's so adorable! When a girl like that can make a guy like me swoon, you know she's special.
