Rush - "Working Man" I mean you can't go to a concert without someone in the audience requesting "Freebird". Even at a Liz concert! For me though as a teen these were the songs I would play air guitar to in my room before I could afford to buy a real guitar. If you're not a fan, then it's not going to convert you, but if you are, it's one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard. Probably not many know where the subject of the email comes from. It's from a song by Jon Brion (he of Aimee Mann, Fiona Apple, Rufus Wainwright fame) called "Her Ghost." Does anyone know when his record will be released (or if it will be released at all)? I downloaded a couple songs from Napster, and I really don't want to pay $200 for the promo copy that occasionally shows up on ebay. If you know, I'd appreciate a response. Thanks, Brett _______________________________________________________ Say Bye to Slow Internet! http://www.home.com/xinbox/signup.html ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 03 Oct 2000 14:13:24 -0400 From: Jason Long Subject: Bounced message From: Dan Subject: KID A/RADIOHEAD WARNING - Very Radiohead oriented and off-Liz. Please skip if you don't wanna read my radiohead review. I can see the headlines now: "RADIOHEAD 'LET DOWN' LEAVES 'NO SURPRISES'" Funny isn't it? No it's not, it's sad. I purchased Radiohead's much anticipated "KID A" at the stroke of midnight at the local record store - the only shop cool enough to stay open to launch a record by a band of this importance to musical innnovation. The opener struck me immediately. A haunting, echoed opening to the brand new album by one of the most exciting bands to come out of the 90's, Thom Yorke's vocals rise out of a soft keyboard chaos like an electronic birth cry - which is fitting since the album is dedicated to "LEO", the first genetically engineered human child. However, the album takes a curve for the different, which isn't surprising for Radiohead, but something was missing this time. I understand a band can't sound the same forever - and that was always the joy of Radiohead. On their previous 3 albums, and 2 EPs - they always managed to sound completely different - yet still be Radiohead, still manage to out-do themselves and all the while - preserve the integrity of the previous release. On "KID A" - I caught myself doing something that I have never done before while listening to Radiohead. As song 3 kicked in, merging into a hurrican of horns and trumpets - it just slipped out. "Wow..they sound just like Bjork." I nearly slapped myself in the face. But it was true. And it didn't stop. The album that I had heard so much hype from - I heard soo many rave reviews about how it is the most innovative thing which could Possibly Maybe change music forever - turned out to be a well put together collection of sounds that I heard back in 95. SOme songs flat-out borderline on copying Bjork gems such as "I MISS YOU", "Headphones" and "My Spine". I know it isn't fair to compare previous albums - but this is an exception. When "OK COMPUTER" was released, all I could do was nod, thinking that RADIOHEAD was going places NO OTHER musician was going. "COMPUTER" was ambitious from every aspect. They combined techno sound with raw guitars. Their drums, bass and vocals never matched up, yet somehow the song would have the most beautiful blend of sound, all you could do is sit back and let mental images form. And they always told a story. Abstract lyrics, vivid imagery and thought provoking words, images that don't mean much, but when you really thought about them, they could mean anything. I understand they were trying to focus on sounds and music to tell the story for this album and it works - but it only really accomplishes setting a mood. It is very atomspheric, but it is also VERY MUCh a time period album. I think a lot of artists are going to make albums like this in the year 2000 - - but worse yet - I think lots already have. And I think even more already have a few years back. Massive Attack, This Mortal Coil, AIR, BJORK, Tricky these people have been working hard at creating "KID A"'s sound for the last decade. I don't feel "KID A" is really going anywhere. If they were going for innovative, and futuristic - it was a miss. BJORK however, hit it hands down with "SELAMASONGS" - and I am almost angry that she doesn't get her name in the credits (even if only a THANKs FOR THE INSPIRATION note) on this album. Because - it sounds JUST LIKE a Bjork album. Perhaps I am missing something. I only heard the album about 5 times, so I haven't given it a full chance to grow on me yet. But I tried to play objectively. I tried to say - "What if I just picked this album up - had no clue who the band was - just decided to give it a try." I would think it sounds like a Bjork album. I would think "Neat - but nothing I haven't heard before." To me, that is far from the spirit of Radiohead. It seems like they fiddled with a computer until they got the songs to sound "cool." This tactic worked will in 1995 - but I expected more for the year 2000 - especially from this band. The album does begin to build however, on song number 8 - and by this time - when the listener finally begins to get into the album, they realize that the album is sadly drawing to a close. "But what about Thom!?!? Doesn't he sing more?? Isn't there a neat nifty bonus gimick secret song even?" Of course there is. about 50 seconds long - I have heard rumour about this 50-something second "Untitled instrumental" piece. I hate to spoil the ending - but it consists merely of an organ note, rising and falling, playing with vibrato and tempo and ultimately - fading out (again). It doesn't exactly strike me as an "instrumental." It seems more like Radiohead didn't give a shit. Keep in mind it took them 4 years to pump this out. Mind you, the album has it's interesting parts - "How To Disappear Completely", "Idioteque" and "Morning Bell" - but for the most part the sounds say nothing to me. It's as if they said to themselves "YOu know, we're established as innovative - we can do no wrong - let's push buttons and make an album that people are gonna buy, regardless." If they were to do this album live - I actually have to wonder if the band would have to even be on the stage. It's all digital - which is the "way of music" i know, but all the same - is it song writing?? Perhaps I am missing the boat completely and am looking at this album with a VERY narrow mind - but it's hard not to say "I expected more." The fact that they closed with a bjorked up version of the VERY VERY OLD radiohead song "MOtion Picture SOundtrack" was such a disapointment. Not even an original song to close the album? I've already listened to this song for the passed 7 years. As a matter of fact - I've listened to albums very much like this for the passed 7 years. They had a bit more emotion in them though. I don't understand what all the fuss is about. Again, I understand that perhaps this is Radiohead's point. It is dedicated to the first genetically engineered human child. Perhaps they decided to make an album, with the human element completely stripped (including emotional lyrics and any kind of brilliant whiz, other than the odd computer hum) as a tribute to this "human" child, man made. A completely man made album - in that sense - mission accomplished. But this has been done before. Concept albums with a clever little "did you get what we were saying - no you probably didn't" gimick to them have been done long before Radiohead was around. This album is nothing new, nothing innovative and not all that much Radiohead - so far on the first few listens anyway. It's almost insulting to listen to at times, other times, it's nice. However, even the "parts" in which it appears they actually sat down and worked together as a band - are nothing we haven't experienced on "THE BENDS" and "OK COMPUTER". In track 7 "IN LIMBO" - Thom wails out "I've Lost my way...I've lost myself..." and I couldn't help but make the connection to "Karma Police" in which he wails the same line "I've lost myself...I've lost myself..." exact same tone, nearly the exact same lyric - and no alarms. No Surprises. Nothing new. I could go on forever and ever about this album, it's Daft Punkness - the fact that, they didn't mix it - and only co-produced it - it is very much nothing more than something the Aphex Twin already pissed outa few years ago. The best part about the album was the hidden booklet inside the jewel case. Never saw that before. Very nice job, whoever designed that. The art direction is nothing short of brilliant either. However, It plays like a pretentious but fun project by Nigel Godrich - who gets credit for mixing, directing, recording and engineering the album. THe rest was done on a computer - which leaves me with the question: Exactly what part of this album is Radiohead? laters, and sorry for being so wordy, i know it was off topic, but i know there are some radiohead fans on here - and i really have no one else to share my reviews with. I gave a discaimer though - so anyone was free to skip - I warned ya! This has been a subject on a couple of other lists I'm on, and the current word seems to be that Jon has managed to buy back the album from Lava/Atlantic, who decided it wasn't commercial enough for them to release. Apparently he does plan to release it on his own, but that was held up for a while by some cybersquatter who had registered jonbrion.com, jonbrion.net, etc. Once he got the domain names back, it looked like he was going to work out a deal with artistdirect.com, much like Aimee Mann has done for her aimeemanndirect.com store. The most recent word on that, though, is that it doesn't look like it will be happening after all, but the record still should be out before the end of the year. I certainly do hope it's out soon. I haven't bothered to download any of his songs from Napster yet, but I'm a fan of his old band the Grays (Buddy Judge, who should be familiar to us all, was another member, as was the great Jason Falkner, who has a couple of solo albums out now). As well, I love Jon's production work with all of the artists you mentioned, so I'm sure his record will be great as well.
