I don't know if I can really consider this selling out; I think the majority of the time, the artists have little say in whether or not their songs get used in ads. Unless they control their own publishing rights or own their masters, I don't think they have much of a choice. I believe it's up to the labels and/or the publishing companies. So, I can't really hold anything against the artists, be they those who've never gotten their due or the rich rock stars. I do find it weird that it's our generation that's being marketed to now (see Valerie's post), using songs of personal significance to me. I guess I'm still not used to being a part of a target market for anything more than clothes and running shoes. ;) The Nick Drake ads seem to have done some good; it seems like a lot of people are starting to discover his work as a result of them. Hopefully this happens for some of the other lesser-known artists and bands whose songs are getting used. Just out of curiosity, which Buzzcocks song was used in the Toyota ad? I haven't seen it, but I'm a fan of theirs, so I can't help but wonder... I've only heard a couple Lida Husik songs on CMJ samplers and the like, but I've been meaning to check out more of her work for a while now. I know that Steve Kisko, who used to post here quite a bit, is a fan of hers and he recommended her album _Fly Stereophonic_ to me a while ago. I never got around to checking it out -- never could find it -- but I'm going to try again to find it while I'm in Toronto for the Sleater-Kinney show next week. >As far as a Liz 'Stairway" song...I would have to say Mesmerizing is what I >think of when I think of Liz. "Mesmerizing" is definitely a good choice, but I think for me, it would either have to be "Divorce Song" or "Shatter" (kudos to Dan for picking this one the other day). The way this song builds and takes you through seemingly every movement of what her eyes see is such a simple joy yet really jumps right out at you. Musically, I can't think of a song that the music compliments the lyrics so well. Having not written anything in forever, I happen to have a few ideas about the current wave of "hip" songs in commercials these days. 1.) The marketing firms today are more in touch with the things the "younger" generations are going to like/recognize/remember--they are closer to our age then when we were kids! (Back then, they were our parents age & chose songs/jingles/info based on our parents reference base. The first time I heard the re-make of The Smiths _How Soon Is Now?_ on a car commercial, I was happy! "Finally, the marketing agents are at least TRYING to reach people closer to my own age!" Rather than constantly catering to the "Baby Boomer" generation (I'm 30, BTW). And, 2.) No matter what the song, I do not base my vehicle (these companies seem to be the biggest "offenders") purchases upon their advertisements. The most recent was based upon my own likes/dislikes, researching Consumer Reports info & price! My husband & I happen to be commited to a certain maker of vehicles--actually one for cars & one for pick-ups. What was their commercial about? I have no idea, nor did I care. In a day when a person cannot even open an eye or ear without being innundated with commercialism (I'm talking the U.S. here---not too sure about other countries...) that it is almost sickening. Everywhere you turn, someone is pimping something. But, it feeds the economy. Bleck, just don't you dare call ME at home about it! *grin* ~gunshy~ Shelly (STILL longing for new Liz, biding away the time w/ new S-K, old Fiona and STP) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Try hard, everyday, to be as good a person that your dog thinks you are..." ~Anonymous ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 10 Sep 2000 11:32:25 -0400 From: Dan Subject: Breeding... I saw the "cannonball" commercial too, and I really don't think it is a big deal at all. I mean, it isn't like they were playing "No Aloha" or anything :) "Cannonball" was a recognizable hit. It is by far the catchiest, most radio friendly song by the Breeders (Okay..."Saints" is fun too) and it's most likely the most widespread air play the Breeders have recieved in about 3 years!! :) :):) Pathetic, but kinda true.. So hell - they're making more money off the song - it was a hit anyway - they might as well cash in on it. I have no problem with an artist using a big name corporation to make money. Or using a small name corporation to make money. If someone is a decent artist - the fact that they wanna cash in now and then is not the end of the world. I don't wanna get into the sell-out debate either only because I don't think there is really such a thing anymore. But, let's not even go there. I mean, it doesn't take away from what a cool song it is (even though it honestly isn't one of my fave breeders tunes) - They sure as fuck aren't doing much else. Oops..was that bitter? hehehe just kidding... I'm sure Kim is gonna give birth to something fabulous really soon. But - the commercial didn't bug me all that much. Then again, not much COULD shock me after the Eve's Plum - Vitamin C transformation. After watching the MTV awards, I was like, disgraced at the state of music today. It's horrible. All I could keep thinking during the awards was how pissed off and bored everyone there looked - and all i could say was "something is gonna snap really soon..." I swear! I think a big fucking change is gonna happen RIGHT infront of our faces - like any day now - and music is gonna flip again. I think the whole scene is gonna change. Anyway, that's just my little prediction... No bye, no aloha... dan. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 10 Sep 2000 23:22:52 -0400 From: "sandra" Subject: phair establishment in chicago? so in AIM chat, my chicago buddy asks me: "does liz phair own a store/restaurant or something in chicago called "phair"??? while at an art show this weekend in trendy "wicker park", i drove by a place called "phair" ... it seems like she'd live in wicker park/bucktown ... it looked like it had a wheat stalk or something in the logo." anyone know anything about this? sandra ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 11 Sep 2000 04:07:01 GMT From: "Gerry Lipnowski" Subject: re Lida Husik "DarkSide oftheMoon" wrote: >Anyone on here ever hear of Lida >Husik? A couple of years ago we had a discussion on the list about what other artists remind us of Liz, and I had mentioned Lida Husik for a number of reasons. I don't have that much of Lida's music, but I really like "Fly Stereophonic", which is kind of trippy, but with a strong 1960's pop mentality and haunting vocals to it. I'd highly recommend it. It was a good album to help fill the void between Whip Smart and WCSE...
