Kelley did indeed learn the guiter from Kim in a 4-6 month cram session. I know she wanted her sister in the band but she also wanted to show you don't have to be a technical genius to play good songs. Kelley got busted, Kim got restless and released a Amps(good) album. Kim then said she found out Kelley&Josephine quit thru reading about. She then put a new lineup together w/a couple old faces. I saw this lineup in March 97. Kim was a little drunk(?) and a little sloppy, but were still very good. They were supposed to go out again in the summer of that year, then it gets hazy. AP listed a Breeders album for most anticapated of 98. Nothing. 99 nothing. I read at this point Kim recorded and scrapped a new album. She was quoted as saying she couldn't get the right drum sound., so she was going to learn and do it herself. I also saw some blips in the music mags that pointed to the fact she made partying a liitle too much. In last months Magnet in a article on Flaming Lips. The drummer Steven Drozd said he signed on to Kim Deals neverending recording session, following SYs Steve Shelley, GBVs Jim MacPherson(yes she did date Spin writer Jim Greer). He describes an atmosphere of confusion, indulgence and creative paralysis. "It was just impossible to get anything done. I may have been smacked out, but at least I could play(ouch). And I stuck around long after the producer quit. One morning I just packed up my drums and drove back to OK without telling anyone." Theres that drumming thing again. Doen't sound to good, but I keep my fingers crossed. I know Kim was very upset and unforgiving when Kelley got busted for heroin, so I hope she's not headed there. Hope she gets it together. Speaking of Magnet a couple months ago Lani(I think) asked about Boss Hog. At this time I was awaiting this CD for free from Magnet for reuppping my subscription. I got Mercury Revs Deserter's Songs last year when I signed up. Boss Hog is actually Christina Martinez's group. Jon Spencer(her husband) is in it but she is the leader and frontperson. Apparently she didn't get along w/Jon when they were in Jon's Pussy Galore together. She was kicked out. Honey I'm home. FU honey. Anyway BHs Whiteout is a very, very good album. I was surprised frankly. There are a couple legitimately great ones. Especially an extremely catchy one called Trouble. Songs are more melodic and groove oriented than Jon Spencer, although I can certainly tell his guitar work. Also I highly recommend Magnet. It regurally features bands like Neutral Milk Hotel , Cat Power, Black Box Recorder, SK and the like. Liz would be very commercial for these guys. Worth it for free CDs alone. They keep changing depending on whats getting released at the time. Always a list of 12 or so to choose.(Of which I know maybe 6) Good place to read about different music. With all this Juliana Hatfield stuff is anybody going to the Riverfest in Northampton, MA with Sleater Kinney, Sonic Youth and Juliana and others? Gald to hear about new Elastica album. I saw them in an underated Lolla 95 with Mighty, Mighty Bosstones, Beck(Loser era), Pavement, Elastica, Hole, SY, etc Although I like SYs Daydream Nation they were LOUD continuous drone. I couldn't take it. Well back in the ring. Haven't heard Julianas new one. Hard to decide since like mentioned, everybody seems to love 1 and hate 1. Later, Bill in CT NP - The Reese Pepper Sessions(if I finish it) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 02 Sep 2000 10:52:26 -0400 From: Dan Subject: Former Breeders That's right! I totally forgot that Josephine Wiggs joined up with Vivian from the late Luscious Jackson to form Dusty Trails. Anyone know if it is any good? As for other former Breeders - Don't beat me if i am wrong - but isn't Jim McPherson now in Guided By Voices??? I think he is...and actually - I think he is about to leave the band. Cool shit that The Breeders are actually working on something...even if it is just Kim and Kelley. As for Kelley's guitar playing - I heard that the first song she learned to play was "Do You Love Me Now?" - which appeared on the Breeders "Safarai" EP - and then a souped up version appeared on "Last SPlash". But that rocks that they are working on something new...didn't the Breeders just contribute a song to like, The Mod Squad soundtrack or something??? Or maybe it was another soundtrack...The Avengers??? Shit..i have no clue, but I remember reading something about a new song in a movie - - but the movie has been out for some time now... strange shit. The Amps' "Pacer" has not left my CD player for a week now. I am more hooked than ever before... I think it is close to the PERFECT rock album, I swear. SoooooooooooooOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooo good. at any rate.... I don't have the Dusty Trails album but am thinking of picking it up, I like what I've heard a lot, very atmospheric dreamy music. Emmylou Harris sings on one song named Order Coffee, which is good. I read in an interview that Viv and Josephine wanted to create soundtrack music for unmade movies. I have that album. It is quite different then the Breeders albums, more pop. Josephine has a very deep voice. Stangely enough I found most of the songs very erotic in an abstract way. If you see it pick it up, it's quite good. Andrea ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V3 #236 ************************************
