EIG was released on an independent label. Jagged Little Pill was released on Madonna's label. it's kinda easy to predict which one would blow up and be more noticeable;) >major women of the rock movement (Sarah, Tori, Bjork) came into fame of >their own volition, not riding someone's coattails, if anyone paved the i think calling Sarah, Tori, and Bjork "rock" is a stretch...but anyways. i dont think alanis rode anyone's coattails on purpose, and to begrudge her for that doesn't make much sense. if what happened with alanis could be considered riding coattails, then i would have to say Sarah and bjork rode sinead's coattails, and tori rode kate's coattails. and that's just insane and doesnt make sense >way for women in rock, it would have to be Phair. Why does Alanis get >all the credit??? liz phair paved the way for women in rock? correct me if im wrong, but there were a ton of women rockers before liz phair. as for liz being the first sexually frank woman in rock...that's simply not true. sure she used the f-word and blowjob....but so did kristin hersh--way back in 1984 when she was like 17! cyndi lauper was singing about bopping herself way back then too. kathleen hanna was screaming "suck my left one" in 1991. pj harvey said she wanted robert deniro to sit on her face around the same time liz said she wanted to be your blowjob queen. ok enough examples;) but not to dog liz or anything...i think she deserves lots of credit...but to say alanis doesnt deserve any and liz deserves the credit she got...makes me sit and go "what about all those before liz?" blah it's a silly debate, i know, and one we've had a gazillion times so i'll just shut up about it. steve...who is gloating over the juliana cover of "say it aint soooooooo" he found on this here napster thingie ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 31 Aug 2000 03:18:44 -0400 From: "sandra" Subject: What's the Deal? calling all pixies/ breeders/ deal fans - ok, so i've become a fan of the supersuckers. via my boyfriend. i'm not even sure where they're from (seattle?), but they're a little y'allternative/twangcore outfit and they happen to have as a guest singer none other than Kelley Deal. my question: it's probable that there's only one kelley deal in music, but -- correct me if i'm wrong -- wasn't kelley invited into the breeders simply b/c kim wanted her sister in the band? didn't she learn how to play guitar JUST so she could join the breeders? that's what i heard, and guess i didn't have much respect for her musicianship as a result (next to kim anyway); i mean, how good a musician could she be? but then there was that whole FedExing heroin thing (or cocaine?), and then there was the Kelley Deal 9000 or 5000 or whatever, and i know at one point i read in rolling stone that she was forming a band with has-beens like sebastian bach (skid row) called "the last hard men." freaky freaky. never did see anything come of that, though. but i listen to the supersuckers, and there's this person called kelley deal guesting on it, and it sounds, dare i say, DAMN good. what is up, can anyone tell me? and as long as we're on the subject ... the breeders are no more, yes? and tammy and the amps, that was a side project of kim's that does not exist anymore? and kim's not involved with that guy from spin. hmm, guess i'm going back quite a few years for this one, but i do remember them being engaged. was his name greer? maybe jim? and what about the other members of the breeders? does anyone know? for some reason i was thinking josephine wiggs joined another band .... hmm, could i possibly ask one more question? ya think? haha. sorry, i'm up way late, i'm going on vacation tomorrow, and it's in that awkward time where i can't decide whether it's worth it to go to sleep for an hour and 45 minutes or just stay the hell up all night until it's time to go to the airport. I especially remember what Kelly said about learning to play guitar just to be in the band. She liked playing guitar too. Would now be a bad time to quote what Buddy Judge once said about the Grammys? As he told Aimee Mann, which she later recounted during an interview, "If I ever win a Grammy, then I would know I suck." Reading that, I didn't feel so bad about Liz only being nominated, but never winning. ;) And for the record, Alanis fans, I'm only kidding. Trust me, I don't want to go there, and I've tried to stay as far away from there as possible whenever the list has went there in the past. It's just that what Katie wrote reminded me of that quote, and Buddy works with Liz, so it sort of counts as Liz content, plus I also got to mention Aimee... You can put down the flamethrowers now. ;) Cheers, Jase NP: Juliana Hatfield, _Beautiful Creature_ Now Sitting on my Table: My Elastica and Sleater-Kinney tickets, which just arrived in the mail -- woohoo!! :) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 31 Aug 2000 16:30:40 -0400 (EDT) From: John Kim Subject: liz phair and survivor Ok, so i don't want to be responsible for starting the SURVIVOR thread or anything, but i couldn't help but to notice that the song HEADACHE from WCSE has the lyrics, "i am the last survivor" and i couldn't stop thinking of the song all last week during all the survivor hoopla. although i usually don't write stupid things like this to the list, i have to do it this time. apology in advance. oh, and i'm pissed about the new nina gordon song getting more airplay on VH1 than polyester bride. that's a bunch of shit. big hug. john kim email: jjk50@columbia.edu aol IM: puppechase ___________________________________________________ "why are you like this?" PAUL THOMAS ANDERSON ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 31 Aug 2000 23:15:03 -0400 From: Dan Subject: The Deals. Okay... Here is all I know... The Breeders went on a vacation. Kelley made a few albums "Go to the Sugar Altar" and "Boom!Boom!Boom!" and Kim Deal started doing her whole "Tammy Amperstand" thing - and formed the AMPS and released the fantastic album "Pacer". Then Kelley went to rehab for Heroin and Kim moved back to Dayton Ohio and played a few small gigs here and there (sometimes with Kelley) and then...blah. That is all I know about the Deals. Does anyone have any other info on what they are up to now? they both strike me (at least Kim does) as musicians who cannot sit still in the business. THey have to be up to something... anyone have any clues??? I am dying for some new stuff..be it Breeders - or solo projects...they always rock, regardless.. Love always, Daniel Deal.
