I had the really cool opportunity to hear the new Radiohead CD entitled KID A. This CD is going to change the perception of Radiohead forever. The CD is a mixture of space sounding samples, distorted lyrics, and drum loops. I really can't go into much detail about the CD having only heard it once, but this is a CD you will never put your finger on. There are so many things going on you will find something new everytime you hear it. I really want to see how they will re-create this one live! ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Aug 2000 06:34:09 -0400 From: Jason Long Subject: Miscellaneous responses Julie wrote: >And a final THANKS to Jase for the tape trading set-up. I hope everyone's enjoying making their mixes as much as I have been. I've only finished the first side so far, but I too am rediscovering all sorts of stuff I haven't listened to in ages. There are certain albums that I'd forgotten how much I loved -- the Pixies' _Doolittle_ being the one that stands out most in my mind right now. My thoughts exactly -- anything else is going to seem like a letdown in comparison. Ah well. Too bad there's not another show worth going to that night that starts later on; two shows in one night would be a first for me and would likely prove interesting. I've not been a fan of the Wallflowers in the past, but I think I'll likely pick up their new album out of curiosity, if nothing else. Michael Penn co-produced it, and I can't help but wonder how their musical styles merged, since they don't exactly seem like the most natural collaborators. I think it is gonna be the kind of album that I end up >loving in a really strange way - like WHIP-SMart. It just has an odd sound >of it's own. I'm glad you're enjoying the Elastica album. I do agree with you that it has a sound all its own, and ultimately, that's probably going to be the album's downfall. While songs like "Connection" from the first album fit in with what was being played on the radio at that time, there is nothing on the new one that sounds like it has a place among what's currently popular. "Mad Dog" is apparently the single, but I just can't see it getting much attention, and none of the other originals on the album seem particularly single-like, even though they are all great songs. The cover of "Da Da Da" would probably be the only contender for airplay, if only for the sake of familiarity, since most people have heard the original. The album feels very fresh to me and it's not really like anything else I've bought this year, but I'm afraid for that very reason it will get overlooked and won't sell even half of what the first record did. I'm willing to place my bets that the upcoming tour will be incredible, though -- I bet the new songs kick ass live, especially ones like "Generator" (probably my current favorite, along with "Nothing Stays the Same"). Brett wrote: >One question: Does anyone know where Liz's "Beginning to See the Light" >came from? It is just so beautiful. "Beginning to See the Light" is one of a number of songs that Liz wrote around the time of _Whip-Smart_'s release. She has said in interviews that she went on a bit of a songwriting binge in lieu of the tour she was supposed to do that fall to support the album, but cancelled. The first performances of the song were on radio shows Liz did later that fall and early winter, where Liz would be interviewed, then play a couple of songs. After that, she performed the song at all of her shows on the solo electric tour she did in April '95. I personally think it's an incredible song and not really like anything else she had done up to that point. I never understood why she didn't consider including it on _whitechocolatespaceegg_, and as far as I know, she's never even recorded a demo or studio version of it, which I really hope she will do at some point. Of course, we also still need a studio version of "You Have No Idea," which is just as incredible, if not more... I even reveled in the article that was passed around on this letter regarding "I just don't get Aimee Mann" or whatever it was titled. I loved it, how if you weren't living in LA and hanging out with pt anderson's crowd, you just wouldn't get her music. well, I happened to pull it out of deep storage last night, and give it another chance. what can I say? I spoke too soon about aimee mann. she's not so bad, and actually quite good. the only thing I would have to say, is that I definitely prefer liz's lyrical style to aimee's. I find aimee too straightforward, while liz's is way more roundabout (including making up words way ahead of her time--such as "ewhat"). at this point, the one song that has not grown on me is "superball" which I pray she has never played live. I also was given a copy of tracy bonham's new album, and the first run through didn't impress me. maybe I'll be turned later though. anyone a fan of her? I've never been. and a note from my matador connection--chatting with him about the artists he dealt with, some being very difficult to deal with (as artists tend to be), but he said liz was a true professional. always did the interviews (which most artists do not like to do) and other promos without a hitch. the one thing he mentioned in disbelief was how tiny she is. our dear liz, the consumate artist. sarah np: Dr. John _Anutha Zone_ __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I have to lead class for a day, close to the end of the semester, and i want to do a review/jeopardy kind of thing. well, all we talk about with India is Karma. I want to have a jeopardy category about karma songs, but so far all i have is "Karma Police" by radio head and "Karma Chameleon" by culture club. Are their any other songs with Karma in the title, or a line of the song that has Karma in it? Thanks a million, Christine p.s. I'm wearing my liz phest shirt, but so far no one has commented on it :( _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com.
