(And to rhyme, apparently.) I am wondering what peeps have heard about the next album... I mean, I haven't read anything about Liz in any recent magazines or anything, but there has been some talk on the digest here and there about possible dates (or at least predictions thereof). I will be out of the country for a year--does anyone know what the CD-release policy is in Europe? I have heard that new music comes out later there. That would suck if that were so and Liz were to have a new CD in the next few months. (Well, I guess someone can send it to me.....? Haha.) Speaking of Europe, there have got to be some [current or former] students who have studied abroad on this digest somewhere... Whoever you are, I would love to ask you some questions about traveling and what to bring and such. Somehow, the travel books and internet suggestions are just not meeting my needs. I specifically need info about Italy, since I will be living there and therefore spending most of my time there. So sorry to not have much to say Liz-wise...but not much has been going on anyhow. Take care all. The new Elastica album strikes me at varying times as being both noisier and more varied than their debut and overall a much stronger record. There are a couple of tracks towards the end where they seem to be running out of steam, but that may just be relative to how inspired the first half of the album is. "Mad Dog," "Generator" and "How He Wrote Elastica Man" start the album with a knockout one-two-three punch and may just be the funnest music I've heard all year. The overall tone is much more varied after that first batch of raucous songs, with the moody "Nothing Stays the Same" being one of the album's standouts. Even the cover of "Da Da Da" at the end of the album, which I was sure I would hate, works well. I highly recommend _The Menace_ to anyone who liked even a few songs off of the first album. And for those curious to check out Elastica for the first time, this would probably be the best place to start. As for the Juliana Hatfield disc, thanks to everyone who recommended _Beautiful Creature_. That's the one I ended up getting, and while I think I still need to give it a few more listens, so far so good. It feels like it's going to be one of those albums that sinks in over the course of many plays, but I already like at least half of the songs and there's a few that really stand out ("Choose Drugs," "Somebody is Waiting For Me" and "Hotels" in particular). The things that I remember not liking about _Become What You Are_ don't seem to be in evidence here: Juliana's voice seems stronger and I think both the production and the songs themselves are much better. Also, the album has a really nice flow to it. It seems like one of those albums where the artist made a point of playing to their strengths, and the only drawback I can really see is that there are a couple of songs that feel slightly repetitive. Overall, though, I can't find much to fault her for and I'm sure I'll like the album even more after I've had a chance to give it a few closer listens -- so far, it's mostly served as background while I've been working away on other things. I'm likely going to venture into some of her back catalog before long. Since _Only Everything_ received a few strong recommendations from other list members as well, I'll probably pick it up next. I'm also intrigued by _Total System Failure_, just because, of Juliana's two new albums, people seem to strongly love one *or* the other and the recent thread about _TSF_ on the list had people just about evenly divided on its merits. I can't help but be curious. Again, thanks for the recommendations. Cheers, Jase ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Aug 2000 08:38:16 -0400 From: Jason Long Subject: Mix CD/tape swap One of the participants in the swap sent me an e-mail that raised a very valid point, so I'd just to clear something up about the swap. Since each person is both receiving and sending a mix, using the honor system, there is no need for anyone to send a blank CD or cassette to the person making their mix. I just want to make sure everyone is thinking along the same lines here, otherwise we may have one person sending a mix out, yet also having to send a blank out to the person who is making theirs. If anyone else has any concerns about the swap, please e-mail me as soon as possible, before people start mailing their mixes out. I know that as this is sort of a beta test of the idea, everything may not run entirely smoothly, but I'd like things to go as well as possible.
