[Jason Long ] Bounced message [Jason Long ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Sat, 19 Aug 2000 05:19:33 -0400 From: Jason Long Subject: Mix tape/CD swap (important for those who signed up!) Hey everyone, At long last, I've finally worked out all of the details for the mix tape/CD swap I proposed a while ago. Thanks to everyone who signed up to take part in the trial run; if this one goes well, hopefully we can continue to do a swap every second or third month. If anyone missed out on signing up for this one, don't worry, you can always get in on the next swap. Likewise, anyone who has signed up for this one is not committed to participate in all future ones; you can opt out at any point. Really, I intend to work this on a swap-by-swap basis. Just a quick refresher since I've had a few questions about the objective of this. Ultimately, what happens is that you will be making a mix tape or CD of some of the music you love and would like to share with another participant in the swap; in turn, you will receive a mix made by one of the other participants. Keep in mind that you will be paired with different people each time we do a swap; you're not always going to be making mixes for or receiving mixes from the same partners. Hopefully the swap will help people discover new music they might not have heard otherwise and allow them to share artists that they feel should be discovered. Of course, this isn't to say that you should only include obscure or unknown artists on your mixes; include whatever music you love, well-known or not. If an artist you want to include does happen to be well-known, chances are that the recipient of your mix may have already heard their singles on the radio or by other means; in that case, you could consider including album tracks that they likely will not have heard. I've noticed that when these swaps have been done on the Loud Family list, maybe people will make a tape around a certain theme; if anyone wants to go ahead and try this, I don't see any problem with it. Below are two lists of participants for this swap. The first consists of those who will be making and receiving cassettes; the other those who will be making and receiving CD-Rs. When you find your name on the list, the person whose name appears below yours is who you will be making a mix for; the person whose name appears above is who you will be receiving a mix from. For example, Lani will be making a tape for Andrea, and receiving one from Paige. Ideally, I'd like to see everyone make and send their mix by the end of the month; then during the month of September, people will receive the mixes made for them and can review them on the list if they like. Also, if we find that the mix reviews are taking up too much space on the regular list, we can set up a separate one for that purpose. I'll leave it up to everyone to contact who they will be making and receiving their mixes from to exchange addresses or any other information. As well, if you have any special requests of the person making your mix, don't be afraid to speak up. The hope is that everyone will be happy with the mix they receive. So, if you want to tell the person who will be making yours not to include a particular artist because you already own all of their stuff or that if they have anything by a particular artist to include it because you'd like to check it out, feel free to do so. Also, one thing I should mention is that while I tried to pair everyone with people from within their own country, in some cases it just wasn't possible. If anyone has been assigned to make a mix for someone in another country and has any problems with that (additional postage costs or whatever), please let me know and I'll try to tweak the swap structure to resolve the problem. As well, if anyone has any questions about any of this, please let me know; I really hope this will go as smoothly as possible. Go figure! I heard the same thing too, only that in addition to not selling enough records, their albums cost a lot to make and Matador didn't recoup what they paid out to the band in advances. I think part of the problem is that _Lamprey_, which went through Atlantic for distribution, didn't sell as well as _Palomine_, then when they put _Dust Bunnies_ through Capitol for distribution and it didn't sell as well either, the writing was on the wall. Plus, the fact that they actually put some money into promoting _Dust Bunnies_ (a couple of radio singles and videos, print ads) and didn't see any results was likely the final nail in the coffin. On the bright side, though, the band might be better off on their own label anyway. They should have been ready for a bigger breakthrough after _Palomine_, but Matador never was able to expand their audience further. And there seems to be a really positive buzz around the new record, so I'm sure it will do relatively well. Besides, they would have to sell a lot less records on their own label to actually see some profit than they would on another label. For example, Aimee Mann started seeing a profit from _Bachelor No. 2_ after it hit 100,000 in sales and her albums aren't very cheap to make; she wouldn't have started seeing money so soon had she released it on a major or through most indies. >Jase- >As for Juliana hatfield- people seem to prefer one of her two new albums more >than the other- kinda love/hate reactions to the albums. >I hate Total System Failure but LOVE Beautiful Creature. >as for Become What You Are- most people I know agree that is her best album >ever, too bad you didn't get into it- its awesome! After receiving a lot of advice both on and off the list, I think I'm going to go ahead and get _Beautiful Creature_ first, since it seems to be the clear favorite among most of her fans. If I like it, I'll probably go out and get _Only Everything_ next. The thing is, maybe if I heard _Become What You Are_ now, I'd like it more than I did when I tried to get into it a few years ago. My tastes have shifted a little, so it's hard to say. I just remember feeling really burned since I didn't get it, but a lot of people whose taste I respect were really high on her music. I think that's why I've been so reluctant to dip my toe back into the water again. Maybe I just picked a bad album to start off with before; for example, I love Joni Mitchell, but if my first Joni album had been _Don Juan's Reckless Daughter_ or _Dog Eat Dog_, instead of _For the Roses_, I probably would have never given her another listen. With some artists, it's best to ease yourself into their catalog by checking out certain albums before others. Anyway, thanks to everyone for the advice -- I will be picking up _Beautiful Creature_ either later this weekend or on Tuesday when I go to pick up the new Elastica. I heard that the tennis player Bettie Stoeve had a book called Bettie Seveert for "Bettie Serves," but that a porn book was released with the same title with a play on the word "serve" in the dominance and submission sense. I love them too so I'll look for this next time I'm record shopping. ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V3 #223 ************************************
