I just got an mp3 from Napster by Ben Folds Five...seems they were doing a live Internet 'cyber-concert' in Chicago and they wrote a pretty damn funny song about it. Not sure what the name of the song is, but here's a coupla lines from the song: (speaking about Chicago) "Scott's mother lives here..... Wesley Willis lives here (cheers from the audience) Liz Phair lives here(more cheers from the audience) The Pope doesn't live here...." Anyways....thought i'd lay that little liz bit on ya'll. cya patrick ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Aug 2000 08:11:32 -0500 From: "Wendy Bryant" Subject: juliana and other stuff _only everything_ is an awesome disc. its my favorite of her solo stuff. i also enjoyed _hey babe_ i didn't much care of _bed_ however, there are a few high points on the disc. and, i think i should give it more listens. ive been a fan of ms hatfield since she was with the blake babies, so i was an easy convert to her solo stuff. check out blake babies' _sunburn_ elastica~my husband has been waiting for the moment for like 5 years or something. im not an elastica fan. and ANDREA, you rule! i love those line's for dar's _what do you hear in these sounds_ And finally....'and when I talk about therapy I know what people think, that it only makes you selfish and in love with your shrink, but oh how I loved everyone else when I finally got to talk so much about myself,' Dar Williams What Do You Hear In These Sounds and, can any of you folks tell me about the sound of belle and sebastion and cat power? take care peoples Wendy ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Aug 2000 10:10:59 -0400 (EDT) From: "Dennis J. The band's name comes from a famous 1970's female tennis player, Bettie Stoeve. Translated it means "Bettie Serves". And how to pronounce it like a true Dutchman (i.e like me): Bettie: Sounds almost like you would pronounce Bettie in English, but the t's sound harder, like the t at the end of "but". Serveert: The Ser part sounds exactly like the English word "Sir", "v" sounds, well like a v in English, and "eert" sounds like the last part of "beard". Keep on practicing and you'll get it right, ;-) -- Mario. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Aug 00 08:41:25 -0700 From: "Administrator" Subject: Re: self-production >From what I can tell, "Sheryl Crow" is regarded as one of the best examples >of modern self-produced work. Go figure; I just like the album. Me, I trust >Bill Bottrell and Company---his name was enough to sell me on Shelby Lynne. I Am Shelby Lynne--is this not a great album or what? Good ol' country blues mixed in with some silky soul tunes from deep down in the south and some cool rockin grooves. Amazing album and I've been listening to it a lot lately especially when I sit down to write the book I've been working on for forever. It really sets the mood ya know? Check it out if you like that sort of music. I was told from someone close to Matador that "they weren't selling enough records"!!!- I didn't realize Matador was soo hung up on that considering some of the other much less popular acts on their roster. Go figure! >> I'm excited about the new Radiohead, too. What is the street date? I don't remember the exact date but I know it goes to radio sometime between the end of august and the end of sept. >> And just how did you get an advance copy of BS's new record? Hook me up! Friends in the right places! It goes for adds on college radio on Aug.28th and should be in stores on Sept. 11th I think. I only have a tape- you should just wait for the cd, unless you can't. It's not that i don't want to share the Bettie love- it's just that i am such a procrastinator and owe some other people (not all listers) tapes. The CD will sound great. >How the hell does one say 'Serveert'? Sir-vurt? Sir-veert? Dunno. I say it both ways depending on my mood. I have a friend who is dutch and when i asked her if she liked bettie "sir-veer" she didn't know who i was talking about- apparently i pronounced it wrong. Jase- As for Juliana hatfield- people seem to prefer one of her two new albums more than the other- kinda love/hate reactions to the albums. I hate Total System Failure but LOVE Beautiful Creature. as for Become What You Are- most people I know agree that is her best album ever, too bad you didn't get into it- its awesome! that's it- dp in nj np:v/a- Holiday Matinee comp.vol.2 ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V3 #221 ************************************
