I just thought I'd post some of my favorite lyrics. I've realized that with most of the lyrics I like, it's not so much what is being said, but how the artists sings them or the tone of the entire song that makes the song stand out. "Sky-writing with the sweep of a flashlight. I'm driving over that way Some pot of gold, it's just a carpeting store on opening day." --LIZ PHAIR Alice Springs "I can see your Chevy parked by the pool Where could leave you a note, but I'm too cruel. The track list is as follows: 1. Sign Of Love (from "Back To The Beach") - Til Tuesday 2. I Should've Known 3. Stupid Thing 4. Say Anything 5. Voices Carry - Til Tuesday 6. Jacob Marley's Chain 7. That's Just What You Are - (acoustic version) 8. Long Shot 9. Driving With One Hand On The Wheel 10. Choice In The Matter 11. You Could Make A Killing 12. All Over Now 13. You're With Stupid Now 14. Everything's Different Now - Til Tuesday 15. Baby Blue 16. Amateur 17. Jimmy Hoffa Jokes 18. Take It Back 19. The Other End (Of The Telescope) 20. Wise Up (from "Jerry Maguire") Overall, I'm kind of torn about how I feel about this collection. A year ago, Universal was telling Aimee that her music had little appeal and wasn't commercial enough and they had no interest in releasing either the Magnolia soundtrack or _Bachelor No. 2_. Now that Aimee's proven otherwise and is experiencing a bit of success finally, they've decided to cash in and take advantage. Not only that, but well, there's nothing on this compilation that I don't already own elsewhere. If they were at least interested in including a few rarities, they should have dug a little deeper in the vaults. Even then, some of the b-sides they did choose ("Jimmy Hoffa Jokes" and her cover of Badfinger's "Baby Blue") pale in comparison to others they could have chosen, like the demos for "Fifty Years after the Fair," "Put on Some Speed" or "Truth on my Side." They did at least get one thing right by including "Driving With One Hand on the Wheel," one of Aimee's finest songs. But why the acoustic version of "That's Just What You Are?" The album version is better, and the one most people would be familiar with. And what's with "Wise Up?" Anyone who would purchase this would already have that song on the Magnolia soundtrack. I'm also not sure if I see the logic of including the 'Til Tuesday material, either. They've already had a retrospective of their own, and those early songs seem out of place among Aimee's solo material. But on the other hand, the album tracks they chose do a good job of representing their respective records, and this compilation might serve as a decent introduction to new fans wanting to check Aimee's work out. Anyway, just thought I'd mention this in case anyone is interested. Both CDnow and Amazon are taking pre-orders for the disc already, if anyone plans on purchasing it. So now I know I'm not really alone. It'll be cool to hear from her. The other day I was listening to Collective Soul's self-titled album and remembered why I love them so much. Anyone else into them? They're better than some other groups that came out at the same time like Better Than Ezra. Jen PS Fiona Apple is the goddess :) "If only there were a button somewhere that I could push. I know you don't like the studio stuff of his you've heard, but Penn is far better live (and this coming from someone who *loves* his albums!). My jaw dropped when I heard how good songs like "Bunker Hill" and "Try" sounded stripped-down, in the tour's acoustic format. Penn's vocals also seemed stronger live. Anyway, when the live disc is released, at least give his songs a listen or two -- he deserves another chance (even if he isn't an attractive white female who's played on Lilith Fair *high-fives Ken Lee*). >Hah! I've already got all the b-sides they're including and all of the album tracks, of course, so what does that leave? The liner notes? Plus, after the label's treatment of Aimee in the past, I'd rather they not see any of my money for a cash-in disc like this. I guess we'll see, though -- I've been known to change my mind. >On a totally unrelated note, I'm going to be counting upon you to >clue me in on the quality (or lack thereof) of the new Elastica release. >Between having to buy a new Discman and other sundry expenses, I'll be >rather short o'cash, and don't need to like, make mistakes. I'll likely post a review of the Elastica disc after I've had a few listens, so maybe expect something a day or two after its release. I've actually been listening to the radio a bit, hoping to hear a single from it, but I don't even know if anything's actually been released yet. >How the hell does one say 'Serveert'? Sir-vurt? Sir-veert? I've actually been wondering this myself... Thank God I've never had to say the band's name out loud. By the way, I'd appreciate some advice from the Juliana Hatfield fans on the list. I'm not really one of the converted thus far, but I'm starting to feel like I'm missing out on something. I did buy _Become What You Are_ at one point, but never really got into it, and ended up trading in it after a while. It didn't really grab me, and there was something about her vocals on that release that bothered me. Since then, though, I've enjoyed the backing vocals she contributed to songs by both Aimee Mann and Mary Lou Lord, which makes me wonder if it wasn't so much her voice as just how the vocals were mixed or arranged. Also, I've heard a few of her more recent songs which I've found myself enjoying. There's one called "Waves" that is actually amazing on all counts and normally when I enjoy an individual song this much and am looking for a starting point, I'll just buy the album with that song, hoping all of the other material from those same sessions is as strong. However, this looks to have just been a one-off for the _Safe and Sound_ comp, so there goes that strategy. I've also heard "Running Out" and "Bad Day" (I think those are the titles) - -- both from _Bed_, no? Would that album be a good starting point, and are those songs representative of the rest of the material on it? Or would one of the two new albums be more to my liking, judging by what everyone knows of my tastes? After seeing a lot of people rave about Juliana lately both here and on a couple of the other lists I'm on, I think I'm ready to give her another try. I plan on going CD shopping at some point this weekend and am going to try to pick something up by her. If anyone could let me know what they think that something should be, I would greatly appreciate the advice. After that dastardly backstab, I'm going to have to get you. True, true (although this isn't a Budweiser commercial). I might actually wind up getting it---after all, it wouldn't look good for a Mann album to tank, regardless of whose pockets the money goes to. >I'll likely post a review of the Elastica disc after I've had a few listens, >so maybe expect something a day or two after its release. Sports Illustrated has its newest Sign That The Apocalypse Is Upon Us: Jason Long, indie Hornby that he is, listening to commercial radio. Either way, I'll appreciate whatever information you can pass along. Is Donna Matthews supposed to appear on this one? Unless they get another 'Connection', I doubt it will have any mass-market singles. >I've actually been wondering this myself... Thank God I've never had to say >the band's name out loud.
