Poe's album is strange in a way. Sometimes I can't get over how remarkably she sounds like Liz in a lot of songs. her lyrics are for the most part witty comebacks in some songs, like Liz... Like for instance during the first verse of "Choking The Cherry", the third track, she says "it sounds a lot like you do, always sayin' shit i know is not true..." During that song she sounds more like she's singing into an answering machine... but that song and "That Day", the fourth track, she sounds a lot like Liz. "That Day" reminds me of girlysound... acoustic, yet produced. It would be amazing to hear the acoustic girlysound tracks produced that well... Someone should track down Liz and give her copies of the girlysound discs and say "hey, this would be awesome if you could recreate this in the studio"... but probably some of the moments for those songs are past and can't be recaptured. Poe's style of music changes throught the cd. Some songs she comes across as an angry rock chick, some songs have some sort of underlying hip hop feel to them, but they're pretty good. A couple, like two, of the songs seem to drag on for me. For instance, "Fingertips" and "Another World". They're decent songs, they just don't appeal to me as much as the rest of the album for some reason. But overall, I'd listen to it over and over if I couldn't listen to liz. Of course, my tastes run rampant all over the place. I've been in a Geraldine Fibbers mood for the past month. With them, I know now what kind of album would be released if Dolly Parton smoked weed for a year. It's the most saddening, depressing, yet highly intoxicating and addicting country music that I've ever heard. And if you thought George Jones was depressing, you should hear their cover of "He Stopped Loving Her Today". Ok I've rambled too much....i was only supposed to talk about Poe, right? haha... I'm too tired to type more. - -Michael "They suck and they suck, but the milk don't come, make a wish, one last kiss, load the gun." -Carla Bozulich of The Geraldine Fibbers http://suprnova.lunamorena.net ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Aug 2000 02:13:45 EDT From: Polygrrrl@aol.com Subject: Re: Poe Hey K, You and I were in the same boat; I used to be anti-Poe also. I love Cibo Matto and Tori Amos. Just so you know: You rule! to ana - i think i have to be in love with you now. Not only did you quote PTA (my favorite director), but also Fiona Apple and The Donnas. to Dan - I might just have to be in love with you too becuz that's exactly what I did when I first got WCSE. Except I didn't get wasted, but I was thinking about it, so it counts. I actually got my copy the day before, becuz Target mistakenly put it out a day early. When I saw it, I almost freaked out. But I listened to nothing but that for days. I'm with you on Whipsmart too. I LOVE it when I listen to it, but when I don't, I don't miss it. To Danaldj - Why did Matador drop Bettie Serveert? I'm excited about the new Radiohead, too. What is the street date? And just how did you get an advance copy of BS's new record? Hook me up! Well, I'll let everyone go now, since I probabaly just took up about 102K in their inboxes. Woohoo!!! Thanks for this bit of news. I'm really glad to see that the album will be out before the end of the year after all. And hey, December is just four months away, so we may see a single and the start-up of the press onslaught in about two months. It was also said before that Liz would be touring again in support of the new record. How cool would a New Year's Eve show be? I know it's a long shot, but it would be just after the release of the record, and if Liz did decide to do something like this, I for one would definitely be there. >oh yeah, he also said the New Radiohead album is coming out this month and it >is a bit different- less rock and more electronic- but supposedly awesome. This month? Wow, I hadn't expected it so soon. I don't know, though -- I'm kind of leery about this "more electronic" thing, just because it's not really my thing. We'll see, though -- I'll at least try to give the album a few listens before I really make up on mind on whether I'll buy it or not. >And ben lee was dropped from Capitol but is still on Grand Royal. For some reason, this doesn't surprise me, but it is still somewhat disappointing. But hey, at least he is still signed to one label. >For all you Bettie Serveert fans- GET THEIR NEW ALBUM!!!!!!!!! I'm really looking forward to this album and I really hope they'll play in Toronto at some point when they tour. Also looking forward to the new Elastica, which is out next Tuesday. For a while, after the previous thread about it on the list, I had considered buying the import just to have it early, but when I found it at HMV, I found myself having a hard time justifying spending so much on one CD (instead, for not much more than what I would have paid for it, I got Elliott Smith's "Division Day" single, a Replacements CD, the UK import single for Aimee Mann's "Save Me" and The Spinanes' _Imp Years_ EP). I was also feeling a little gunshy based on the EP that they released last year, which seemed a little lacklustre. But all of the advance word-of-mouth on the new record seems quite positive and I find myself really wanting to hear the new material. Also, Aimee fans, apparently she and Michael Penn will be releasing a live disc from their Acoustic Vaudeville shows before the end of the year -- definitely another one to look forward to. I still get goosebumps when I remember hearing the two of them harmonize -- my God, the CD isn't going to leave my player for months! New Liz, PJ Harvey, Elastica, Bettie Serveert, and more from Mann and Penn; 2000 has already been a great year for music in my opinion, and the idea of all this other good stuff on the way has me thinking that this could be the best year for music in about the last five. Yeah, Poe's blatant rip-off of Liz's Whip-smart cover art, for one. Re: WCSE musings... I have to play off Dan's assertation that Whip-smart is, like, weird, man. It has sort of officially become my favorite Liz album. What I initially disliked about WCSE was the lack of weirdness, more than anything else. I hardly ever listen to it, but when I do put it on, I find that it is an okay album -- if you don't pay extra-close attention to it. I actually like it less than I did 2 years ago. I first thought it was just the production, but now I'm a lot less interested in the actual songs, like "Big Tall Man," "Uncle Alvarez," and "Go On Ahead" (although there are a handful of tracks that I can count as Liz favorites). The songwriting on Exile and Whip-smart seems to be lot stronger, and has certainly withstood the test of time. I had a Liz dream last night. She was going to teach me the strange chords from "7 Veils," but there wasn't a guitar handy, so she never did. Typical! - -E __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Go figure; I just like the album. Me, I trust Bill Bottrell and Company---his name was enough to sell me on Shelby Lynne. "Bed" is a fine album; I'm happy to own it, but there are things that just seem like where Juliana was less experienced, the album suffered. The first five or ten seconds of the album are like this, and a couple of other places where she rather distorts things, the album just seems far too rough. I understand her motivations in making "Bed"; they're all fine and dandy, but I keep getting the feeling that the album was a beta release, if you take my meaning. Oh, sure---I prefer Juliana Hatfield at her furious best (see Total System Failure), mostly because of the contrast in lyrical style from most of the other artists that fill my CD racks[1]. When she's angry, Hatfield doesn't seem to bother with convoluted lyrics that require several hours of perusal to understand; just like an atom bomb, she's in your face, loud, and /very/ pissed. Refreshing change from the rest of my collection. I'm just of the opinion that self-produced albums are sometimes kinda risky. As long as no 'Only Son'-type songs make it onto the next ECP project, things will be fine. [1] No remarks from you, Ken Lee!
