Hounds of Love, 1985. Wow. Tori Amos is also an amazing producer...her sound sure took a turn when she took complete control of production. If she never did that we'd probably still be hearing little earthquakes over and over and over again. Cibo Matto's Yuka Honda also did an amazing job with Stereotype A. she sure set the shit straight with that one, didnt she. she made all those lame critics who said they were a novelty "food" band stick their feet in their mouths. also mentioned in the last digest: >i was reading through glamour i think (my mom gets it- i HATE it) and >they had a page of newcomers who were called ones to watch, and they had >this girl Leona Naess (sp?) i think thats her name and they said she is >being billed "the next liz phair" does anyone know who she is? or has >anyone heard her? i may have been totally off with her name- No, you're right, that's her name. However, i do not understand why glamour said she was the next liz. She doesnt sound like her, vocally (she sounds more like the singer of the sundays) or musically. she look like liz either. her cd "comatised" is good, but most of the songs are cheesy love songs (well, not as cheesy as nina gordon or anything like that!) or sad breakup songs about boys. same ole same ole...definitely not liz phairish! not a bad sounding cd though. and she's got a good voice. if i had to throw her in a category with other musicians, it'd be with chantal kreviazuk, lisa loeb, dido, sarah mclachlan and others like that... i recommend the cd to anyone who's a sucker for that kinda pretty-but-cheesy stuff (i know i am!) colleen fitzpatrick (or vitamin d or whatever she is now) just needs to go away. she is so annoying!!!!! i can't believe she's going to be in a movie now. Blah! steve ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Aug 2000 02:30:42 -0700 From: "Michael Honaker" Subject: Leona Naess Leona / Liz I personally can't see a comparison between Leona and Liz right off. I have only heard Leona's song "Chosen Family" and the only comparison I can make so far is that they're both female. Being that I haven't heard more of her, I can't really say whether she is close to being the "next Liz Phair" or not... thats just my opinion. I just hate it when people say that someone is the "next" something... that usually means that they think something bigger and better has come along... It's like they're saying "hey, the angry rock chick thing has been done to death, move on to this girl...she's more up to date." aaaah.. they suck... Liz is still the queen no matter if she's angry or happy. Liz is Liz, and Leona is Leona... I don't really see a connection. Personally, I'd be more interested in comparing Poe to Liz. I was listening to Poe's "Hello" cd and I distinctively remember "Choking The Cherry" reminding me of Liz for a second... maybe thats just me. But in Poe's song "That Day" she reminds me more of her in the way her voice flows, and the lyrics "You look like shit, what's your problem bitch? You're legs feel like sandpaper, you can't do anything right." To me, thats more Liz-Like than Leona. But once again... my opinion. Maybe I'm wrong. Anyone else ever noticed a similarity (even a small one) between Poe and Liz? - -Michael "Baby, I can't fake it, I'd like to see you naked" -Tanya Donelly http://supernova.lunamorena.net ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Aug 2000 02:49:50 EDT From: DiskoBoy23@aol.com Subject: Re: Amy Coreia has anyone heard of Amy Coreia? I'll just never forget it. I was working midnights at a video store and I got off work at 7am - and then this chick (who was a customer and I think had a crush on me) came and picked me up (I know..weird, she set her alarm for 6:30am just so she could come pick me up cuz she knew from talking to me on midnights that I was excited about that day) - and she wanted to get into Liz Phair too. So we go out for breakfast (she paid) and we hit the mall at 8:55am so I could be the first one inside HMV to grab the cd. So the doors open, I walk straight to the new release section - and start searching..and searching..and searching - and there was NOTHING! Nothing at all... Keeping my cool completely, I walked over to a nearby salesguy and i was like "Excuse me...did you guys get the new Liz Phair album in?" (Knowing damn-well he was most likely going to pull it out from behind the counter or something..) and to my shocked horror, he answers back: "ACtually...no we didn't. Our shipment was delayed - we never got them in yesterday - so we are expecting them anytime after 2pm." That answer was unacceptable. I was FLOORED!!! After sooo many mother fucking delays, when I thought nothing else could go wrong - OF COURSE - at my favorite record store the stupid shipment is delayed. So I popped on over to the *OTHER* music store in the mall and bought it there..and I was very annoyed that they only had like 5 copies - and it was given a small corner spot on the new release wall. I almost didn't see it there. I was really annoyed. So anyway, I ended up going over to my "THEN-BOYFRIEND"s house and listening to it for the first time and it was the most INCREDIBLE thing!! I adored it!! I had heard the 96 Shelved Demos/Studio Recordings, so I knew what to expect on some of the songs - but others, like WCSE, Big Tall Man, Johnny Feelgood, TOTALLY completely blew me away!! I fell in love instantly. It surpassed even my highest hopes for what it would sound like. I didn't sleep at all. Instead we got 12 beer - drank 6 each, listening to WCSE on repeat the entire time, sat on the front porch (it was one of the nicest days of the summer)stared at the inlay of the CD, noticed all the inconsistent lyrics and just got loaded. Finally, we passed out around 7pm (it was something like my 29th hour being awake) and I had to get up at 10pm once again to go to work!!! I was sooo dead!! So i had the CD on repeat the entire night at work. I still get nostalgic when I listen to the CD sometimes, thinking about that day. It just had sooo much character for some reason. That CD is such a SUMMER CD for me. (God..could I have said "CD" anymore in that paragraph?? Holy repetative.) Exile In Guyville is still my favorite Liz Phair album...and WHIP-SMART is like, I don't know. one of the weirdest CDs I have ever heard. I don't know what to think of it. I LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT - but all the same - I have a weird relationship with it. I rarely put it on - but when I do - I become hoooked on it for like, DAYS AND DAYS AND DAYS - and it is all I can listen to. It's just such an odd sound. I still feel pretty much the same about Whitechocolatespaceegg as i did back then. However - I now like the song "GIRLs ROOM" - I didn't care for it much as a closer back then - and my favorite song is probably either "Go On Ahead" or "White Chocolate Space Egg". At the time my faves were "RIDE", "Uncle Alvarez" and "Johnny Feelgood." Either way it is something i could NEVER get sick of...just like a Liz Phair album. They're all like that, I think... weird shit. 2 years... *sigh* Dan. %&%&%&%&%%%%&%&%&%&%&%&%&%&%&%&%&%&%&%&%&%&%&%&%&%&%&%&%&%&%&%&%&% "You leave with everything...." -Hole. *******************************^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^* ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Aug 2000 10:30:53 EDT From: Emo5858@aol.com Subject: Lines I like Just like to throw my .02$ in on my fav. lines from songs. Liz: "Whatever happened to a boyfriend, The kind of guy who tries winning you over and Whatever happened to a boyfriend, The Kind of guy who makes love cos he's in it..." sorta cliche sounding, but I also like the delievery and crap on this line of Bloodkeeper: "I'm a wreck, I'm a mess, I'm insane. Isn't that what you want me to say?" Non-Liz: (I have hundreds, but I'll try to narrow it down.) Fiona Apple, Love Ridden: "Nobody sees when you're lying in the bed, and I wanna crawl in with you, but I cry instead. I want your warm but it will only make me colder when its over, so baby I (cant remember exactly) for you. No not baby anymore If I need you I'll just use your simple name Only kisses on the cheek from now on And in a little while, I'll only have to wave." Dave Matthews Band, Dancing Nancies: (note: almost any DMB song looks trite and cliche in words to non-fans, but when I hear it, it sends chills.) "Sing and dance I'll play for you tonight The thrill of it all Dark clouds may hang on me sometimes But I'll work it out And then I Look up at the sky My mouth is open wide lick and taste What's the use in worrying, what's the use in hurrying Turn turn we almost become dizzy" The Donnas, Get You Alone: "Rock you in my car Feel the fire, Superstar Turn up the bass and adjust the seat I'm on you like a shark on meat." I received a strange response. He said it is not currently on the roster of upcoming releases, but that it is slated for december. (Apparently the roster only shows the immediate upcoming releases for the next 1-2 months). I know you guys already had an inkling that the record was due out in december, just thought i would tell you what Capitol told me. oh yeah, he also said the New Radiohead album is coming out this month and it is a bit different- less rock and more electronic- but supposedly awesome. And ben lee was dropped from Capitol but is still on Grand Royal. For all you Bettie Serveert fans- GET THEIR NEW ALBUM!!!!!!!!! (out real soon in the US) Private Suit (the new album from Bettie Serveert on Palomine Records) is out already in Europe, but since Matador stupidly dropped them, the album will be distributed by Hidden Agenda/Parasol in the US. I got an advance tape- It is AMAZING!!!!!!! and incredibly addicitve- I just listen to it again and again and again. I made a tape of it for a friend and she said the same thing! They are supposed to be opening for Live and Counting Crows in the Southeast in Sept. and playing CMJ again in Oct.
