If >so, how do you feel about it in comparison to the earlier albums? Might as well have been---I had been a Liz Phair fan for about three days or so before I got this, if memory serves; it was definitely less than a week. After getting the girlysound version of 'Stratford-on-Guy' from Aaron Walker, I'd asked a friend if he knew who Liz Phair was, and bought his copy of whip-smart, and within two days had bought wcse. 'WCSE' was a _very_ different tone in comparison to the startup of whip-smart; I used to absolutely hate that song, but it grew on me, and is still one of my favorites from the album. EIG took a month or three more to find, and I remember thinking at the time that there was precious little commonality between EIG & wcse. I tend not to look negatively at the majority of the ECP catalog, choosing instead to view each as a separate period piece. Therefore, I really don't have an opposed opinion---I simply like all four E/LPs as they are. >For those who were already Liz fans at the time of its release, do you feel >it is a marked departure from her prior work? Do you think she should >continue working with Scott Litt? How do you feel about the tracks she >produced herself, compared to her earlier work with Brad Wood? It's a definite departure from EIG & ws; Ken Lee will forgive me if I daresay that wcse was more of an attempt to be a "Lilith-y" sound, with less obvious ire and energy. If she can't get Brad Wood, then Scott Litt will do in a pinch, as long as he doesn't create any stinkers like 'Only Son'. Admittedly, I'd rather see her with Jon Brion---just for the hell of it, an experiment so to speak. The album'd be weird. At the risk of sounding mean-spirited, I just don't think that on the average, I'd want to see ECP back in the producer's booth. Producing one's own album can be risky: Either you come off like Sheryl Crow's second album, or you get Juliana Hatfield & 'Bed'. I'm not entirely sure she's got the maneuvering room to learn producing on a new album. Two or three songs, perhaps, but no more than that. She's good and all (hey, it's _her_), but nonetheless, I just don't know. As for the 'sound' bit, I dunno. The 'polish' of the album was appreciated; if lo-fi means GBV low-quality, then by all means, slick that puppy up. It may be 'indie-cool' to record an album on equipment that predates the Carter Administration, but it's no fun as a listener. Monaural audio doesn't cut it any more. However, if "lo-fi" means that the album doesn't sound like it issued forth from the latest Jive Records shake-and-bake boy band, well then, lo fi (like Coke) is it! >I know a lot of people are very fond of the unreleased songs on Ken's WCSE >Sessions CDs. Are there any songs that you think had they been on the album, >would have made it a stronger record? 'Bars of the Bed' and 'Blood Keeper'. 'nuff said. Well, actually, no. I would have cut out her spoken-word parts on 'Bars' and just had her singing the National Anthem; that version is so damn cool, that it cannot be rated. Jimi Hendrix, eat your heart out. 'Blood Keeper' is one of these songs whose exclusion is downright unforgivable. It almost sounds like it could be the opening song to a James Bond film, with that slow and languorous guitar opening. Hell, if Shirley Manson can get that gig, ECP deserves a shot. 'Keeper' just has nifty lyrics and what not---like a lot of ECP songs. Pattern here, eh? Unfortunately, I'm still having a hard time seeing what reason 'Uncle Alvarez' has to be on this album. With regards to running order, I don't have a clue; sorry. At any rate, I've rambled enough---and probably infuriated at least one person. Probably something left out, too. That as much as I like wcse ultimately it does pale in the most crucial respect. My thoughts were more about the selfconscious dynamic of her selfrevelations now that she has a husband and kid to consider. I remember liz saying how her husband agreed not to listen to her stuff, but even if that may be the case, even saying that leaves a linger of the selfcensor worrying what others will think--which is just what exile never smacks of and which makes it so powerful. She's good, but not as good as Liz. As for Vitamin C, I remember when Colleen was in Eve's Plumb, and liked her better then then now. EP was cool, but one more great New Jersey band that never made it nationally. A shame, I can think of a whole list of bands from Jersey, Fountains Of Wayne being the latest, as well as Shade's Apart, a cool pop grunge band, not to make it big nationally. Funny Colleen lied about her age. If you went to HS with her, what part of Jersey are you from, I'm from Red Bank.
