Some of her guitar solos sound like she's trying too hard to impress the guys. The two albums (Total System Failure and Beautiful Creature) taken as a whole fit together nicely, though, they tend to balance each other out. But what I really can't wait to hear is Juliana's next one, that is if she's able to shed the Verucaness and mesh the hard sound with the softer in a more unique way. She comes close to this a few times on Beautiful Creature and did well with it on Become What You Are, so hopefully, the next album will be the one to really rock the boat! I liked her lyrics, whether in retrospect it was her who wrote them or whatever. As for Dave. I didn't like him at first, and said the same thing you did about everyone liking them, blah blah blah. But, he puts a hell of a show on live. I only have one cd _Live At Red Rocks_ but it kicks some serious ass. Not too keen on the studio stuff- unless I like the song live. Anyway, just thought I'd share, sorry it's off topic Chris ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Jul 2000 06:22:36 -0700 (PDT) From: Emil Breton Subject: Liz Phair: Giggly School Girl Extraordinaire Sarah wrote: <> Ex-CEO? But does this mean she didn't think "Firewalker" would make it on the record? Kick-ass! I never liked that song. It's unfunny (in an uncool way) and the "I can grow" chorus just seems really unoriginal and near-hackneyed. Does anyone else think this way, or haven't you guys ever really paid that much attention? <> But isn't that cool? She cares enough about her work to make it great (most of the time), yet she's just a giggly school girl in person. I think that contradiction is neat-o. Your friend should've seen her on JBTV way back when. When I first saw this, I thought it was Mr. J.B. who was the annoying one. Paige, I agree with you about Pete Sampras. Did you happen to see that quick-cutting Nike commercial with him and Agassi during Wimbledon? I always felt kinda bad for disliking Sampras, but that "sinner/saint, Independent/Republican, boxers/briefs" compare & contrast exercise made me feel better. Sampras really IS hard to like. But WHY are some people here lumping Aimee Mann and Sarah Mac together? I don't get how anyone could just flat-out dislike Aimee Mann. I also don't understand how everyone could have a fit over an Aimee mann thread and then not even notice the daily (and unnecessary) Nina Gordon updates we got earlier this summer. I just don't understand the situation. Emil __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Get Yahoo! Who have you been listening most to while awaiting the new Liz? i'm in unfortunate financial circumstances right now, which means no new CDs for valerie. but i've been falling back on wilco, beth orton, fiona, portishead and the prissteens lately, as well as any cool new music i can get on web-based radio. my tolerance for commercial radio has reached an all-time low. > 3.) I think my concerts on CD collection is pushing almost 100 shows now (about 250 discs). I couldn't blame anyone for hating them due to the Abercrombie and Fitchers who show up to sing Crash in every city, however, musically I don't think there's many bands out there that compare. It's not just Dave though. He's probably least talented as far as his instrument goes. Carter Beauford is arguably the best drummer in the world (I think he's much better than Neal Pert or that wunderkind Waronker). The detail and variety in his drumming gives me goosebumps. Leroi Moore plays 11 different wind instruments (of which you'll hear most during every show at some point). Stefan Lessard is second only to Victor Wooten when it comes to the bass (the guy is 25 and has been in the band since he was 16). Again, the detail and imagination is amazing. He's a generation ahead of anyone his age. And Boyd Tinsley on the violin speaks for himself. He's completely unique and mesmorizing to watch. It's unfortunate that not many people will get to see them in the small clubs anymore where you can just watch these guys jam out but that Live at Red Rocks disc is a pretty good sample of the instrumental talents. I've been a Hatfield fan since she was in the Blake Babies and while I dig Beautiful Creature a lot, when I listened to TSF at the listening station at Fingerprints in Long Beach, CA I couldn't get into it. Maybe 3-5 years ago it would have been something I would've bought, I don't know, has my taste in music changed that much? Probably not. I still can pop in my X cds or Sleater Kinney or Nirvana or Debbie, er Deborah Gibson (that's a joke ya'll). Than again, I like Juliana's more mellow albums which will have a couple of hard rock tunes on them instead of the whole album. Maybe if I gave it a closer look at, like bought TSF and sat and listened in the privacy of my own home, maybe than I could get into it. I guess when I want to listen to JHatfields music I want it to be more mellow. If I wanted to listen to something as hard driven as TSF I'd listen to SK or something. Oh well...
