Yes, I know you said the lyrics are > stupid, but that's what you were insinuating. > Whatever.... > > Craig oh, please. if i wanted to disparage someone for liking something, i would say so in a very straightforward & unambiguous manner. it's just that given the great talent of juliana hatfield, i was surprised to hear her release such a thoroughly awful album, and i was even more surprised that people actually like it. that's it. if you like it, fine. - -vasant ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Jul 2000 07:20:12 -0500 From: "Wendy Bryant" Subject: Re: support-system-digest V3 #198 > 1.) I sooo want some live bootlegs. I have a possible source... some "interesting" news, one of my co-workers is the ex-CEO of matador records. I of course constantly bother him about my favorite matador artists: liz, pavement, jonspencer, sleater-kinney. he gave me some old liz bootlegs, and I'm holding out for more. he said the job was more about babysitting than p&l: ie getting called at home because so and so was stuck at the airport and had no money...so he would have to go to the airport to hand them some money to get home. lots of those kind of stories. very humorus( I just wish he'd give me NAMES!) anyway, I just though I would share that with all of you. liz content: friend of mine's boyfriend writes for rolling stone and interviewed liz for the millenium story. he was chatting with her about "firewalker," what a great song it was. she said that she had unable to duplicate the sound she liked, which she had played at this show at wellsley. he ended up sending her his copy of the show. hopefully she'll put it on the new album. on the downside of the meeting, he said it was disappointing to meet her, because she came off as a giggly school girl, instead of accomplished artist. *sigh* (I'm laying money that liz had an meeting with that mexican maryjane prior) and that her publicist is ranks as one of the nastiest and protective he has encountered. (good for liz) I'm loving my new home in new york...liz content in the office... by the way, has anyone made a cd from rarities collected from napster? I've heard there is some great stuff on there that I'd like to get ahold of. sarah np: Angry Johnny and the Killbillies: Love and Death and the Meter Man http//:www.getangry.com __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? You think Hetfield's bad with that stuff on the radio, you should hear him live. His new vocal style makes me squirm. It's sad how far Metallica has fallen since the black album. You know it's bad when the best line they can come up with for a new song is "Hey, Hey, Hey" in 'I Disappear'. What has happened to the once mighty Metallica?!?! Dave Matthews simple because of the trendy crowd that seems to like them because everyone else likes them...I see nothing spectatular there and now I cringe whenever I hear them. Alanis I actually kinda liked her songs, especially 'You Oughta Know' but then all of the sudden she was this icon and people walked up and down the high school halls singing her and the news hailed her as some groundbreaking phenomenal woman and I thought of all the other women who were just as good and probably better than her that somehow never for noticed...and it made me mad, I don't hate her now...but when I tell people I like girl rock they always ask me about Alanis and Ani and Beth Orton...and they are always confused when I tell them "no, not those"...I have no problem with Ani or Beth, I guess I am just not feeling what everyone else does. Totally not intentionally!!! I went to Best Buy to get the _Bandits_ soundtrack and on a whim, stopped by a used CD store. I went stright to the "ph"s, like I always and automattically do, and scanned it. Then when I went back over it, I saw the title screaming at me...I didnt even think I would see it. I was prepared to mail away to a record shop in Amsterdam! I feel so lucky. I have a stupid grin on my face right now.... I realise that Anne was just sharing her opinion. Now I am going to share mine. When Alanis first came out, I was one of the many who thought her to be the all out god of rock. Its only now in retrospect, 4 years later (and after that crap of a 2nd album) that I realise that while she has a certain talent as a lyricist, she isnt all that and a bag o' chips like everyone thought. She didnt even write the music for her 1st album, it was only a collaboration (which, to people who might defend that as the sae thing, the Spice Girls (and a lot of other "fluff" bands who one might put down) co-wrote their own music). So. She's alright, but not the muscial messiah that some have thought her to be. But Dave Matthews...he is truly a legendary talent. His style might not be for the tastes of some of this list, but I think that as a musician, he must be respected. His guitar skills alone are amazing, and his social conciusness (ie anti-aparthied, colonization) is something that few artists this day and age have had the balls to take on (or the brains). Listen to his songs from _crash_ that havent been released. Like _#41_, _two step_, or _lie in out graves_. Those are masterpieces. But thats my $.02 xoxo ana ps Anne, you go to Gettsburg College? I was just there for a yearbook workshop. Lemme just say that you are a brave girl, my friend.
