I definitely agree with you; I'm a huge fan of Joni's work, but I've had a lot of difficulty getting into _Dog Eat Dog_. "Good Friends" and "Empty, Try Another" aren't bad and the songwriting overall is good, but the production and arrangements don't really do anything for me. Of all of Joni's work, this is the album that sounds the most dated and it doesn't hold up well, especially when compared to her other records. It sounds very much like a product of its time, whereas albums like _Blue_ and _Hejira_ have a more timeless quality about them. >and jase, thanks for the info on the wcse import. but >i live in toronto so i can probably find my way to sam >the record man before you can. Hey, no problem. The Sam the Record Man I spotted it at is the one on Yonge Street, not far from the HMV superstore at 333 Yonge. I believe it was selling for $49.99, which is kind of pricy. If Tower still has it, they might be a little bit cheaper. Also, it's cool to know that there's another list member relatively nearby. If Liz plays in Toronto again when she tours in support of the new album, all of us from Ontario who will be going should arrange to meet up before the show. Did you happen to see Liz when she played at the Opera House in October '98? It was a *phenomenal* show. I've been trying to track down a tape of it for ages now, but nothing has surfaced yet. :\ Cheers, Jase NP: Sleater-Kinney, _All Hands on the Bad One_ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 Jul 2000 02:08:30 -0700 (PDT) From: ---becky--- Subject: re: joni & hurricane cindy how could i have forgotten 'blue'? i must have gone momentarily insane. i have only been in toronto since january and, actually, am in vancouver right now. but i believe we have been in the same place at the same time because you posted about the aimee mann concert that played at the phoenix. i work there. i wasn't working that night but after my clown class (uh...did i mention that i am a clown?) i came and caught what was left of the show. serendipitously, becky ===== "if the fool were to persist in his folly he would become wise." -william blake http://i.am/beckybecky __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Anyway, I went to the used CD store this weekend and picked up Throwing Muses' CD "University." It was pretty good. For me it was a choice between that, Jen Trynin and Kacy Crowly. Does anyone listen to Throwing Muses? I know Jen Trynin had a topic of her own awhile ago. Jen "One of the advantages of being disorderly is that one is constantly making exciting discoveries." -- A. Her old folky stuff was my favorite of her music and of her new stuff I own the "Taming of the Tiger" CD. It's much different from her old folk stuff. Recently I heard a song she wrote for a Chieftian's album called "Magdalene Laundries" and it talked about the Irish woman's struggle. So...for me her voice might not always be perfect, but lyrically she's great. Here's my responses to the poll 1.) What Liz CD have you listened to most recently? Exile in Guyville 2.) Who have you been listening most to while awaiting the new Liz? Fiona Apple's "When the Pawn..." and Sinead O'Connor's new album 3.) What previously unreleased song do you hope DOESN'T make it to the new album? None cause if it's Liz it's good 4.) What month do you expect the new album in? As soon as possible...September would be nice. REM's making me wait till 2001!!! :) Jen "One of the advantages of being disorderly is that one is constantly making exciting discoveries." -- A. A. I guess most recently i've listened to WCSE, but i've had EIG in my car. i've been in the mood for secretly timid, but i think its in a box of burned cds at home :( New song i don't want on the album: i honestly haven't loved any of the new songs, but i guess L/H is my least fav. also, since i like the original version of "hello sailor" so much, i think i'd just be annoyed if the new version got on. none of the new ones holds up in the slightest when compared to "blood keeper" oh, and i agre with jase and the others who have mentioned wanting to hear a studio version of "if i ever pay you back," which is one of my liz faves, and also "beginnign to see the light" abnd "you have no idea," What have i been listening to recently... throwing muses and kristin hersh, to get myself totally psyched for the show. i was playing beth orton's"central reservation" a lot last weekend, too. i need to devote some serious listneing time to both new juliana hatfield albums. i've also ben listening to the magnolia soundtrack alot. when do i expect the new liz... i haven't the foggiest idea.. i won't even venture a guess.. hopefully before m y b-day in january.... But seriously, the thing I've always loved about Mac is how great the three leads - Stevie, Christine and Lindsey sound within the group's constraints. Their tangling, twisting harmonies sound as fresh to me today as they always did. It seems when they go off on their own, it doesn't mean as much to me. Unless we're talking Lindsey singing Holiday Road from National Lampoon's Vacation! :) I love the attempts and have the solo albums, but the Mac stuff always touches me more. paige- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 Jul 2000 14:09:15 EDT From: BeeFly27@aol.com Subject: stevie nicks thats crazy stevie nicks is awesome. my mom raised me on her. i LOVE edge of seventeen (partly about the death of john lennon) and landslide. those to songs are impossible to ignore. and i think its cool that her and sheryl crow are like best friends. bella donna thats all i have to say kim "oh the witch" grace slick on stevie ps i just got a burner and made a liz cd w/ a bunch of unrealesed stuff on it email me if you want it and we can work something out ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 Jul 2000 15:23:24 CDT From: "Erin C."
