I hate her. I hate her voice. I'm glad that she was there to fight the good fight, so to speak, for women in rock, but I think she can't sing on key. I can't really figure out what the big deal is about her either. Yours, Katie ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 23 Jul 2000 04:58:41 -0400 From: Jason Long Subject: Tape swapping Hey everyone, I received a fair amount of response to the mix tape/CD swap that I proposed a week ago, so I'm definitely going to go ahead and organize this. Within the next few days, I'll figure out how I'm going to structure it and will post to let everyone know who they will be making a mix for. If anyone still wants to get in on this but have not already e-mailed me, let me know so I can make sure you'll be included as well. For the most part, I'll try to make sure everyone is assigned to make a tape for someone who lives in the same country. There may be a few cases where I'm unable to do this, though, so if you are paired with someone from another country and are worried about the additional postage costs, let me know and I'll assign you to someone else. The following is from an e-mail Chris DeLisle sent me with some suggestions for how to approach this: >1) should there be some sort of parameters? like should we set up some >categories of >a) i might be interested in... >b) please don't send me "xxx" because i have all their albums... >c) for the love of god, please don't send me...because i'll never like it and >you can't make me (this usually turns out to be C&W in my circles) I think ultimately I'll leave this up to the individual parties to work out amongst themselves this time around; just make sure that you take the time to express any concerns or make any suggestions as to what kind of material the mix you receive will include. I really hope that everyone will enjoy the tapes they receive and will discover some new music as a result of this. However, if things doesn't work out very well during the first swap, I'll probably put together some sort of survey to give everyone and then for the next swap pair everyone up with someone whose tastes closely resemble their own. If anyone has any questions, please feel free to let me know. Cheers, Jase NP: Aimee Mann, _Bachelor No. 2_ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 23 Jul 2000 07:34:07 -0700 (PDT) From: Craig King Subject: poll 1.) What Liz CD have you listened to most recently? Well, I just downloaded the Just Passin Through live version of Polyester Bride from Napster that I've been listening to quite a bit. I love that it's a slow, laid back version of the song. Really cool. As far as full length CD's, it would be Whipsmart. 2.) Who have you been listening most to while awaiting the new Liz? Stone Temple Pilots (as always) and Juliana Hatfield have been quite addicting. Also, Megadeth and Anthrax to get ready for the Maximum Rock Tour baby!!!! I've also been addicted to Motley Crue's new single "Hell On High Heels". 3.) What previously unreleased song do you hope DOESN'T make it to the new album? I hope they ALL make it on the album. I haven't heard a Liz song I don't like, and at this point I'll take any new Liz I can get. I think I'm one of the only one's who likes "L/H Transmission". I'm especially looking forward to the studio version of "Don't Apologize". 4.) What month do you expect the new album in? I'd like to see it released in October for some reason. Just something about that month. Realistically I'd say January or February at the latest.....hopefully..... Also, I just have to say that Samantha Maloney of Hole is truley one of the best drummers in the world right now! She's really proving herself filling in as the drummer for Motley Crue for the Maximum Rick Tour, and she's been awesome! It takes alot to win over a metal crowd especially if your a female, and she's been doing just that. Samantha kicks ass!!!! Just thought I'd contribute to Paige's latest poll.... 1.) What Liz CD have you listened to most recently? I feel slightly guilty as I have not been listening to Liz at all lately. I guess (and I'm ashamed to admit it) I'm not really into her as much as I used to be. I hope this changes with a new album. I just haven't had any urge to put any of the albums into my CD player. 2.) Who have you been listening most to while awaiting the new Liz? Well, I've been listening to a lot of my old Eurythmics albums. I just love Annie Lennox. Such a classic voice. Other than her, I've been listening to Chantal Kreviazuk's latest, "Colour Moving And Still" as well as Dido's "No Angel" and Patty Griffin's "Living With Ghosts." 3.) What previously unreleased song do you hope DOESN'T make it to the new album? I'll agree with Jason on this one - "Hello Stranger." I too, prefer it in its original form as "Hello Sailor." But even as that, it's never been one of my favorite Liz tunes. 4.) What month do you expect the new album in? Now a days I love her, but not unconditionally. I like her 60's and up to 1975 stuff, and I pick and choose since then. She's better now the she was in the 80's and early 90's, as I do want to buy her current album, but her jazzy period of the late 70's, with the exception of Hissing of Summer Lawns, and the 80's/early 90's with the exception of Wild Things Run Fast, I stay away from. Too 80's sounding and way to pretentious for me. And even with her new album, quite frankly, I'd go out and buy whatever Liz puts out next before I'd buy the new Joni. I really have no clue. But I'm hoping [for my own sake] that it doesn't come out until after April 2001 because that's when I return from Florence, Italy. I don't want to have to worry about finding the new CD in Europe as I will be attempting to consume my time with traveling and eating and mingling with the natives. I know I haven't posted in oh-so-long (probably a year or so) but I've been keeping up with the digest while in school and all. Something semi-interesting occurred the other day... I work for Michael Keaton's production company and I just found out that his partner, Harry Colomby's brother was in the band Blood, Sweat, and Tears. (Does the name have commas?) Anyhow, I thought that was pretty random. I don't know if I would recognize any of their music, but my dad owns all of their records... haha. Okay, I have nothing more to write (at least on-topic.....not that the last paragraph was.....). Take care all. Melody "It's my duty to please that booty" - -"Shaft!" It looks like this is being released earlier now. I just checked and Amazon has it listed as being available on July 25 -- just two days away. They've been selling the import version as well. What is it with Matador these days anyway? Although I've heard a few of their more recent signings, I haven't been impressed with any of them. Now that they've dropped Bettie Serveert and Barbara Manning, and both Liz and Guided By Voices have left the label, the only bands left on Matador that I still care about are Yo La Tengo, Cat Power, and Belle and Sebastian. I'm reserving judgment on Mary Timony for now, because I still haven't heard her solo album, but the general consensus seems to be that her work with Helium was better. Sorry for the delayed response on this; there have been a number of posts I've been meaning to respond to as soon as I had some free time, and I'm just going through them now. It looks like the Japanese import of _whitechocolatespaceegg_ is no longer available. CDnow and MusicSelection.com both used to carry it, but neither has it listed now, and I couldn't find it on the sites of any of the other online music retailers I've dealt with. If you didn't specifically want the import, but just want to get "Hurricane Cindy," it is included on the WCSE Sessions CDs that Ken Lee has offered to the members of this list. You can e-mail him at for more information about the discs. Otherwise, if you're strictly after the import, the last time I was in Toronto, I saw it at one of the Sam the Record Man stores and at Tower Records. I probably won't be in Toronto again for a couple of weeks, but if you'd like, I'd be more than happy to pick a copy up for you if either store still has it. The same goes for anyone else on the list who would like a copy, if I'm able to find more than just one. Let me know and we can work something out.
