I just /had/ to hear "What Makes You Happy", 'cause it was a nice and sunny day down here in the lower end of the Commonwealth, and I found myself saying "I see the sky above me, like a fullllll recovvvvery..." (to myself; I'm not /that/ damaged), and thus dug out the CD for what is arguably my favorite song on a damn fine album. Regis, answer number two is a little more difficult. Recent purchases include Juliana Hatfield's double disc set, of which "Total System Failure" is just so absolutely splendid and Hatfield at her best; Jefferson Starship's Fillmore East live album; Lara Fabian's US debut [1], Nina Gordon's new album [2], Bonnie Tyler's 1983 release [3], "No Need to Argue", by the Cranberries, and other things which need not be mentioned here due to the fact that some people might have a coronary. [4] Toss in with that the odd Jefferson Airplane, Liz Phair and Material Issue, Sarah McLachlan, Dido, etc... Hrrm..."Oh My God", or some of the other drivel from the wcse sessions. Don't get me wrong; Liz Phair's poorest song is light-years ahead of all teen-pop content, but still---when songs like "Blood Keeper" [5] and "Bars of the Bed" are ignored, I mean, come on...."Only Son" should never have seen the light of day. Let's go with August 2001, Regis. Why? Three years after the release of wcse; I just can't think of any other market date that's worth a damn. I'm no A&R executive; I don't know these things. [1] Whee. I got this album long before the local radio stations played the hell out of her single. Whee...leader of the pack. [2] Oddly enough, I find eerily Mann-esque notes to her music. Vocals at time sound like a low-fi Mann, and she's got a song or two which I actually considered 'meaningful' in my own context, which only Aimee Mann has previously managed to do. Props to anyone who can work 'Hebrides' into a song that isn't a sea chanty. [3] I was laying in bed one night thinking, "Damnit...I'll have to order this from CDnow. There's no friggin' way it'll ever come around here. Seventeen years out of date is hopeless." About a week later, I'm at K-Mart looking for another CD, and I just happen to browse over the 'T' section, when lo and behold, there was "Faster Than The Speed of Night", in all its ancient glory. It also happened to be on sale for $10.44 with tax, so yay. But opening with a cover of Credence Clearwater Revival is...odd. [4] If you must know, country and cabaret. Lee Ann Womack and Ute Lemper, respectively. The first is to continually acculturate myself for the change in styles with George W. Bush's inevitable and necessary victory in November (Hi, Andrea!), and the second in my quest for retro-cool. [5] This would make a perfect James Bond theme song, don't you think? OK, I'll bite, seeing as I haven't really been participating much lately... > 1.) What Liz CD have you listened to most recently? _WCSE_, since it's the only one I can find since I moved and have all my crap in boxes. > 2.) Who have you been listening most to while awaiting the new Liz? BOWIE BOWIE BOWIE! db. Davis Bowtie. Tha Man. Most specifically, _Hunky Dory_, which has to be one of the most brilliant rock albums ever. Also _Lodger_, coz it's been in my car forever. Wish I could find either of my copies of _Scary Monsters_. > 3.) What previously unreleased song do you hope DOESN'T make it to the new > album? I'll agree with Jase: "Stranger." > 4.) What month do you expect the new album in? Erm, I won't even venture a guess here. I've always been disappointed in the past. Uhh...haven't listened to much Liz lately, but if I do, it's usually EIG. 2.) Who have you been listening most to while awaiting the new Liz? Chantal Kreviazuk's both albums and Juliana Hatfield's Beautiful Creature. Also all of STP's stuff to get ready for the concert on the 26th! :) 3.) What previously unreleased song do you hope DOESN'T make it to the new album? Hello Stranger cuz I like the original. Also Love/Hate cuz...well... it doesn't sound like Liz with that opera part comes in. *gulp* 4.) What month do you expect the new album in? I'd like for it to come out around my b-day for some reason (Sept), but I see it coming out in November or December. Oh yeah...here are some Liz Phest photos up on my site. I hope to put up some of Jenni's good pics up as well. http://www.geocities.com/wcseliz/lizphest.html Katie ();) ===== ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ "Everybody's talkin' 'bout the new sound Funny, but it's still rock and roll to me." - Billy Joel __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? It's very good. I'm glad to hear you like the CD; it's easily among my top 5 albums of all-time. I strongly encourage anyone who hasn't already heard _Gun Shy Trigger Happy_ to check it out, especially those who like both Liz and Aimee Mann. You just can't go wrong. Unfortunately, though, the album is getting harder to find. CDnow lists only the cassette as being available, and Amazon has had the CD listed as being "on order" for quite a while now. A few of the other online music retailers that I've checked out don't even have it listed or say it's not available or has been discontinued. The best bet would be to check to see if any local music stores still have remaining stock on hand or to search the used bins. Secondspin.com, which sells used CDs, usually has a few copies available as well. Jen's first album, _Cockamamie_ is still readily available through the online retailers and is worth checking out as well. It's not quite as varied in mood or style as _Gun Shy Trigger Happy_ is (it's far more of a "rock" album) but it's almost as good and worth having as well. Hopefully someday there will be a third album to talk about. Jen showed an incredible amount of growth between her first and second albums; I can only imagine how great a third would be.
