Hmmmm... I bought the album "Tonight and the Rest of My Life" by former Veruca Salter Nina Gordon...and...well.. I don't really know what to think of it. I mean, I am not going to compare the album to Veruca Salt - because it is obvious she is *NOT* doing the Veruca Salt anymore..this is her own thing.. However, I don't know what to make of it...I think I was expecting something more along the lines of Whitechocolatespaceegg - something kind of unclassify-able and rather interesting... but... this album...has high points..but lots of spaces where I start yawning... I don't find this to be an interesting album. Like, it just doesn't say too much, I don't think... there are some catchy tunes..some rockin' tunes..I really do like "Badway" and I even like the poppy opener "Now I Can Die" - but songs like "Hold On To Me" and "Fade to Black" and that cheesey album closing cover of "The end of the World" - I don't know..it strikes me as kinda boring and almost like "filler..." Like, if one of those songs were on the album, I would think "Okay..this is the filler song.." but there are a few of them..they just kinda bore me and don't say too much. Like, at all. The lyrics are rather on the cliche side, exhibit A: "I still believe in a thing called forever/ but we're drifting apart it's true/ and it's breaking my heart in two..." I don't know...it just kinda makes me a little..iffy. High points for me are "NUMBER ONE CAMERA" - which i think is a very CHEESEY, glossy nod towards the song "NUMBER ONE BLIND" (duh!) and is kinda saying "I SEE YOU" to Louise Post. I like "Badway" and I like the opener... the rest..I don't know about...It is just kind of music that doesn't say all that much to me, musically or lyrically. I mean, if I never knew this was "the girl from veruca salt" - i would just think "Blah! She's some girl who somehow got a record deal - and these songs are pretty much shallow nothing-songs - she'll 'fade to black' in a couple months..." Like, if I didn't know this was NINA GORDON (name in lights) I would just think it was a boring artist who needs some refining on her lyric writing. She didn't hit any nails on the head..to me, it is just a pop-rock album that is going to blend in everywhere with typical songs about breaking up and being soooo in love...and all the cheesey choruses that always (without excpetion) go hand in hand with these types of songs. I don't want to rip on it too much..i only heard the thing 3 or 4 times but I am not immediately impressed by it. And it isn't the type of album that seems like it will grow on me... Like, Sleater-Kinney is something that grows on me... I usually "semi-like" the album when i first hear it..but know that the more I play it - the more new things I will hear and discover in it - and I will love it more and more... I noticed, with Nina's album - I am kinda like "Okay okay...next song already!!" like - it's kinda "whatcha see is whatcha get" and so far, I don't see too too much. I really wish she was still in Veruca Salt though...she added soo much to the band.... but all in all - from what I see so far - I think Veruca Salt is keeping true to the Veruca Salt flavour..I didn't have any complaints about "RESOLVER" at all...it was a fun hard rocking angry album. I tried to judge Nina's as an album on it's own..I am not going to compare it musically to Veruca Salt's - but all the same - I think Louise really proved herself as a songwriter on RESOLVER. Someone who could do THE SAME THING she did as a duo - all on her own... Nina (even though she is occaisionally backed by former Veruca Salt members Stacy Jones and Jim Shapiro) is kind of leaving something to be desired.... but maybe it'll grow on me... dan. %&%&%&%&%%%%&%&%&%&%&%&%&%&%&%&%&%&%&%&%&%&%&%&%&%&%&%&%&%&%&%&%&% "I don't have a case, that's why I have a hammer." -Farrah Fawcett, "Extremities." *******************************^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^* ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Jun 2000 13:19:13 EDT From: "Morgan Hartsell" Subject: OT: Nina Gordon The new Nina Gordon CD is absofeakinlutely brilliant! Kind of like art-alternative, if that makes any sense. They're on Barsuk Records out of Seattle. The second album, _We Have The Facts And We're Voting Yes_ is, IMHO, better than the first, although there arequite a few who favor the first release. Of course I never thought for a moment that Liz would make any of the four voters' lists. And she didn't (although Alanis made #3 on one guy's list). The good news is that at the beginning of the show there was a collage of moving images including a ticker-tape with female artists' names scrolling by--and Liz Phair was on THAT list as plain as day. So, who won in the final balloting? If anyone cares, 1. Tina Turner 2. Aretha Franklin 3. Janis Joplin The crime is that Joni Mitchell did not make any of the voter's top three! I might have excused the younger voters, but at least Robbie Krieger should have picked her instead of Joan Baez! ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Jun 2000 19:46:11 EDT From: AWeiss4338@aol.com Subject: Re: The List's #1 female solo artist In a message dated 6/27/00 6:47:58 PM Eastern Daylight Time, j5j@psu.edu writes: << So, who won in the final balloting? Joni probably would have been #4. But I kind of agree with Robbie, Joan was around before Joni, she learned a lot from her (and where is Judy Collens in this, Judy did a lot for Joni by covering Both Sides Now and giving Joni much exposure), and Joni might not have been around if it wasn't Joan. I dont know why im so excited; ive had it for a couple months already, but just seeing it in stores (along with the AWESOME new VS cd Resolver) is so awesome. I know you are all probably thinking "oh, shes all pop now". the truth is she has gone soft a little, but it is still similar to the VS-Nina. And it isnt any worse than the transition from Hole's Live Through This to Celebrity Skin. Im really upset with her label tho. i think it is disgusting how they are marketing her to all of these britney-fans. they want her to be the next christina aguilera or something and it makes me wanna throw up. nina is different- it is really awkward hearing her on KISS FM. Also, nina wanted "bad way" to be the single i believe, and instead the label made her release the balad "tonight and the rest of my life". it is still an ass-kicking song, but that is a song that ANYONE (including 13 year old girls... NOO!!!) can fall in love with. Oh well, its still NINA, and i hope she is succesful. I'd feel really bad for Louise tho if NIna's CD does better than "Resolver", cus Louise was the one that was hurt. And judging from Nina's lyrics on the new CD it seems as tho she has admitted that the "feud" was her fault and that all she wants is peace. who knows, maybe in "2003" we'll see a VS reunion!!!! IN my dreams... lol mike ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Jun 2000 01:12:21 EDT From: HOLEPARTS@aol.com Subject: Re: Tonight and the Rest of Her Career. "Hate Your Way" is an awesome rock song! every song was great. i was thinking... there was NO song on the album that i dont think would serve as a succesful single. Nina would be good off releasing any song as a single.. they are all that good and catchy mike ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V3 #174 ************************************
