Sleater-Kinney are indeed one of the best live bands out there right now, and while I haven't had a chance yet to see them this year, I highly recommend that anyone who has the opportunity to go see them does. Although I'm not all that fond of the self-titled album as I used to be -- it hasn't stood the test of time as well as the others -- I would highly recommend anything that has come after it. _Call the Doctor_ is excellent, maybe even a little better than _Dig Me Out_ which is a fine record itself and quite possibly their most accessible. To me, _The Hot Rock_ was a great record, but I don't find myself compelled to listen to it as often as _Dig_, _Call_ and the new one. It was great to see them expand upon their sound and add a little more texture to their songs rather than remaining stagnant and just continuing with what they already knew worked. The only thing is that in challenging themselves and adding new elements to their sound, some of the songs didn't have the same immediacy as the ones on the previous two albums. As for _All Hands on the Bad One_, it may just be the best of both worlds. It seems to have the accessibility of _Dig Me Out_, while retaining some of the adventurousness of _The Hot Rock_. Also, their playing is tighter than ever and Corin's vocals are really strong throughout. As big of a fan as I am of their work, I must say that I was still surprised by how good the record is. Usually by the time of a band's fifth album, they start to slip or run out of ideas, so I tend to expect any band that's been around that long to eventually drop the ball -- especially a band who has released five albums since 1995. Sleater-Kinney sound as inspired as ever, though, and if anything, they've raised the stakes even higher this time. Anyway, I definitely second the recommendation of _Dig Me Out_ or _All Hands on the Bad One_; if there is anyone on the list who hasn't yet checked S-K out, you really should do yourselves the favor. If you're already a fan but don't have _Call the Doctor_ yet, be sure you treat yourselves to it at some point. "Good Things" alone is worth the price of the CD. >first post since re-subbing, verbose as always, Welcome back, and thanks for the great post and link to that article. I still play the first Elastica album on a fairly regular basis (just listened to it the other night, in fact) and never really get tired of it. Has anyone heard the six-song EP they released about a year ago? It seemed obvious that even after having four years to write and record new material, they still hadn't really decided what direction they wanted to go in or what sound they were going for. There are a few moments that seem really inspired, but overall, they've settled for letting the songs merely be good instead of great. The last I heard, they were going to be working on a new record for release sometime this year. I just hope that it's a lot more focused than this EP. I've never heard one Liz song in a bar till now and had never been in a bar till 5 am. Kids under 21 and in Chicago (hey Christine), you have something to look forward to. 2) The magical Wrigley Field and the Cubs game. Allison promised me a Sammy Sosa home run and she delivered just like Babe Ruth to that kid in the hospital. Except I'm not a kid nor am I in a hospital. 3) The Yo La Tengo show. Jenni did everything you can do at a show. See Jenni make us YLT fans. See Jenni gush while getting photo with lead singer Ira. See Jenni dance. See Jenni get into trouble for taking pics during the show. 4) Speaking of trouble, Lynda comes to mind. I had heard about it. I had read about it. But I had never actually seen someone get kicked out of a bar. I believe the term is getting 86ed. Is that right? Thanks, Lynda. It was exciting. 5)Watching Liz sing "Oh My God" on a MTV video that Craig brought. I had never seen her sing it. Great. 6)The bum who took TMK's picture with an imaginary camera "behind his eye." 7) Generally, it was fun giving shit to new people. It's just my nature. Call me obnoxious, but call me. Examples: Christine and her mystery shirt which has a beer pictured with the initials FGC above it. Nobody knows what it means. If you ever want to know something about baseball, ask the Human baseball almanac, Mark. I would say something evil about Chris, Paul, or Katie, but you guys were too nice. Work on that for next year. 8) By the way, Craig informs us that women in Wisconsin wear cheese negligees to bed. And I thought I was, uh, well-traveled. Thanks to organizers Allison and Craig, for my favorite weekend of the year. Hey Jason, the list still shines brightly, from time to time. To Ruthie or whoever else wanted to know about Throwing Muses, alittle explanation. Kristin Hersh reorganized a one off reunion of Throwing Muses basically for her unofficial fan club. People came from Australia, England and such. She had a meet and greet, let you take pictures, played a solo concert and topped it off with a Throwing Muses concert. (Tanya Donnelly played 4 songs off Real Ramona w/them! and Bob Mould opened!) All this took place on Cinco de seis at the Middle East in Cambridge. I almost cry as I say this because I bought a full day pass, and my FUCKIN car broke down on the Mass Pike. I figured I could tow it back, rent or get a car, then be back for the Throwing Muses part at night. Wrong. Don't ask but I didn't make it. Sob. Any way it was so successful there was talk of another day on the West Coast(but I live on the east coast?) Apparently though Kristin was approached at the May show to do this Digital Festival? The show is July 22(Sat.) at Lupo's in Providence(her old stomping grounds). All the info is on their Throwing Music web site(www.throwingmusic.com) The tickets are supposed to be going on sale soon at www.virtuous.com. You actually get an e-ticket(they hate Ticketmaster) as to avoid scalping. No ticket stub though(I saved my Mass Pike ticket for bitter memories).
