Put it on repeat and you might not know the difference though. This list is getting slowly smaller. I'LL CRY! I SWEAR! So what does everybody think of the newer songs. I love them all to death. 1) Don't Apoligize (It's so cute and dance in circles-y) 2) Love/Hate Transmission (I am DYING to hear a studio version) 3) COB2Bouncers (Is it just me or does it seem like liz is trying to make up for some of the 'mominess' the media gave her for WCSE. This and L/HT give that impression a little) 4) Hello Stranger- I still think whoever on this list requested this backsatge one day made her rethink it. I haven't gotten completely used to the redo but I cannot hear the lyrics clearly either. "Way down in New York City" instead of "Free love is a way lot of bullshit". Damn. 5) Firewalker (I'm gald liz is using her range a little more. It's beautiful. that's it. nathan ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Jun 2000 05:42:35 -0700 (PDT) From: Gabriel Peterson Subject: Art and the Artist Gerardo wrote: > That's not what i mean, what i'm saying is that, the > important thing about Albini, or anyone, is the > music, their art, caring about anything else too > much is pretty dumb to me... like 'I used to like X > artist so much, but now, he/she said things and did > things so uncool, i don't listen to his/her music at > all' <--- And this happens to a lot of people, now, > i know you feel disapponted sometimes, but all you > need to know, is that he/she made VERY good ejoyable > music. I have to disagree with this. I think there is so much more to art than the final product. The Diary of Anne Frank is not what it is because it's a good read. It's amazing because it's the author's experiences and interpretations. That would not be the same book even if it was printed word for word but was fiction or just written by a third person regarding her experiences. Joy Division's album cover for 'Closer' wouldn't be nearly as chilling if not for the events which occurred just prior to its release. Lenny Bruce's comedy sucks but it's great when you consider the situation he was in when he was performing. I know this isn't what you were referring to when you talking about separating the person and the art but I just don't believe you can do it (it's possible to be ignorant to the other but I don't think you can separate it once you do know). take care, Gabe One more thing, I hear about Albini all the time and I pick up tidbits of what he's been a part of but he reminds me of Bob Geldof in the sense that he seems to always be in the news or in an article without actually doing anything and you have to take a minute to remember what actually did do. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I'll show you my ass if you give us directions! Is that the sun coming up? Did you ask that guy where the bar is? Yeah. What'd he say? He was on drugs. You going out tonight? Naw, I'm staying in...(Goes out anyway) ... How about tonight? Goin' out? Naw, I think I'm gonna stay in...(Goes out anyway) Do you sell cigarettes here? Yes. What kind do you have? What kind do you NEED? What would you like to drink? A Banana Margarita, with sugar on the rim of the glass instead of salt. This hotel SUCKS! Could you take our picture? Yeah, sure. Use this camera. THAT'S steve's idea of news? i yawn in his general direction. a basic rule of life: if you want to be wealthy, go into business. if you want to have fun for a while, be mildly famous, pick up girls (or guys), and travel a little, join a rock band. but you're as likely to get rich in a band as you are to escape a rough neighborhood by dreaming about being the next kobe bryant. it seems to me i once heard that liz basically manages her own tour schedule and expenses, and controls the t-shirt revenue, the ticket prices, the opening acts (with some encouragement from the label). that's smart. now, personally I think napster is fucked up, and that all writers and artists are going to end up screwed by lazy, cheap-ass people who think it's perfectly okay to steal their work and not pay a dime for it (is it *really* better to be screwed by the proletariat than by the politburo that runs the labels? i'm not so sure it matters -- the result and the soreness are the same). but i do agree with one of napster's main points: bands in the future will make money off of merchandising more than off of cd sales. and i suspect that trend won't lead to better music or more artistic vision in the world. it will lead to better t-shirts and posters. period. on a somewhat different topic, there's an interesting article about sleater-kinney in sunday's ny times (you need a login-ID, but there's no fee to read the articles online). it's written by greil marcus, who's the best living rock critic, and who's written several excellent books on music and culture ("Lipstick Traces" is a particularly amazing book). many interesting points in the article about S-K, the power of their music, the state of the music industry today, their reasons for recording on kill rock stars records, S-K's determination to manage their own merchandise, and a welcome mention of the rapid destruction of the bay area in california, which may wind up being remembered as one of the most important cultural tragedies of our era. but basically it's an article about a rock band: http://www.nytimes.com/library/music/061800sleater-kinney.html ...and some realaudio clips of the interview used to write the article. http://www.nytimes.com/library/music/061800sleater-kinney.1.ram.html i saw S-K live a few weeks back, and, despite the warm-up from a couple of loser opening acts on the bill, they were every bit as powerful as marcus makes them out to be in his article. i highly recommend either "dig me out" or their new disc, "all hands on the bad one" as true classics. i'm less crazy about "the hot rock", which seems a little throttled back, and i've never heard "call the doctor" or their first, self-titled album, except what they played in concert. hey, even if you're just waiting for liz's new one, you might as well try something different and pick up 'dig' or 'A.H.O.T.B.O.' A quote from the article: "In the 60's," Stanley Booth writes in the new edition of his "The True Adventures of the Rolling Stones," "we believed in a myth -- that music had the power to change people's lives. Today we believe in another myth -- that music is just entertainment." first post since re-subbing, verbose as always, o ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V3 #166 ************************************
