Don't know why, but I do. So I have a question for someone out there who recommended Sarah Harmer. I just purchased her CD "You Were Here" just from hearing the song "Hideout" which I really liked but I hope the rest of the album is just as good? Can that person tell me a little more about the album? Also, I too have been wanting to buy Lauren Hoffman's album "from the blue house" for the same reason and I think I must get now that liz b. has said she likes it. I happen to think Albini is a fucking prick (and those of you who know me realize this is harsh language for me), but he's spot-on here. Okay, I read this article when it first came out and yes, he's mostly correct. Only the labels make money on these deals, the artist always suffers. Most artists don't have any creative control over much past the recording studio (and most not even that, sadly...). In a recent interview the members of Korn said they had very little if any control over their videos. The studio sends them a script, they show up on the day to film and that's it. According to some friends (okay, acquaintances...) of mine they also got ripped on their publishing deal pretty badly by the label and management. This is common and has been since the beginning. Now about Albini's music being great... I'd have to argue about that. P.J. Harvey hated his producing on her album and released her demos to prove she was right; Nirvana wanted to remix what he did on their album but settled to have it remastered to avoid a lawsuit; his drum sounds are usually murky (Dave Grohl's snare sounds like shit on all but two tracks of the album. Not Dave's fault.)his bass is distorted. L7 refused to ever work him again. That he writes controversial articles keeps him in the limelight as well as the fact that some artists still choose to work with him. Also: "...but what i do know is he has helped create some VERY good music>> Exactly, and you know, that is the important thing!" I think that being a decent human being is much more important than ANY music you make, no matter how great it is.
