Best sing-along number for a while is 'i hope you don't mind' (from 'Megiddo'), i think Liz would have been proud to have written that, shame it can't be played on the radio as i'd love to segue it with 'It's the end of the world as we know it'. btw, it was Lauren's birthday on the 12th June, so belated wishes to her. ..Glad you liked it liz b and once again you show how open minded people are on this list, i once got roasted for recommending Josh Rouse on an Alt. Country list! "and i wonder how i've come to know so much less than i knew before" ... Joseph Lee Henry. "i know the promise is so much better than the real thing" ... Although that sort of status is not normally bestowed upon someone with such a limited catalog, Jeff died, so we are only left with what he did put out, what he almost put out (_Sketches_...), and what may come out (the recently released live CD as well as the VHS and DVD of a performance in Chicago were all released well after he died). If you buy his second album, the aforementioned _Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk_, you will find in it liner notes full of touching and sad literature. There is stuff in there from friends, producers, and most importantly his mother about Jeff, his music, and his death. The stuff might bring you to tears - especially if you have grown attached to his music. The album was supposed to be entitled _My Sweetheart the Drunk_. However, he died in Memphis (drowned in the Memphis River to be exact) in the summer of '98 (if my memory serves me well). He was on his way to the studio to meet up with the rest of his band to cut the final versions of the songs he had been working on and retooling for ages. Apparently, he ate some lunch and then wandered into the river for a swim, his friend turned his back, and that was the last time anyone ever saw Jeff alive. It was surmised that he may have been caught in some current caused by a boat that had gone by. So, as it turned out, the album came out after his death (it was put together by his band, friends, producers, and his mom) and "Sketches for" was added to Jeff's intended title. Anyone who does not know Jeff's material is strongly encouraged by this list member to go out and buy it immediately. I have personally been responsible for turning over twenty people onto his first album, _Grace_. The album sells itself with just one listen. Perhaps the most beautifully arranged piece of music I have ever heard is Jeff's cover of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah." For any of you who aren't intimately familiar with Leonard Cohen's work also - shame on you. Anyhow, that's my tidbit on Jeff Buckley. If his music doesn't blow you away, I don't know what would. I know almost all of us here are not just fans of Liz, but passionate music fans in general, and as such, you should check out Courtney's speech. She makes a lot of excellent points about Napster, MP3s, online music distribution and the major label system. She clearly knows her stuff and she offers a lot of insight and thoughtful opinions, backing them up with hard facts; she's done her homework. This may just be the best damn thing I've read about the music industry and its treatment of artists since the infamous article Steve Albini wrote. If you want to read Courtney's speech, you can find it online at . Be sure to check it out. The state of the music is just awful. I wish there was some that I could do to change it. Right now it's sickening. I can't believe that they can actually ask napster to shut down. I don't even have napster downloaded on my computer. Oh well just something, Ciara (if i don't shut up now i'll keep going) ___________________________________________________ GO Network Mail Get Your Free, Private E-mail at http://mail.go.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 Jun 2000 16:42:51 EDT From: BeeFly27@aol.com Subject: please help! if there is anyone out there that can make me a cd of some of the different liz phairities that i have heard on the internet i would be so thankful. i think someone on the list said that it should be for return postage and a blank cd only, or a trade. whatever. i have the girlysounds cd if someone wants to trade that or ill send you a blank cd and postage. just email me privately if you can. thanks in advance kimberly ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 Jun 2000 23:16:08 EDT From: HOLEPARTS@aol.com Subject: Re: Something to check out << I know almost all of us here are not just fans of Liz, but passionate music fans in general, and as such, you should check out Courtney's speech. Get 'Grace', it could make you cry hearing that album and knowing this guy is dead. Gerardo * From the music information bible All Music Guide: Jeff Buckley Born Nov 17, 1966 in Orange County, CA Died May 29, 1997 Since he was the son of cult songwriter Tim Buckley, Jeff Buckley faced more expectations and pre-conceived notions than most singer/songwriters. Perhaps it wasn't surprising that Jeff Buckley's music was related to his father's by only the thinnest of margins. Buckley's voice was grand and sweeping, which fit with the mock-operatic grandeur of his Van Morrison-meets-Led Zeppelin music. Buckley began playing as a high school student in New York. Eventually, he moved to Los Angeles to study music; while he was there, he performed with several jazz and funk bands, as well as playing with Shinehead, a leader in the dancehall reggae movement. A few years later, he moved back to New York, forming Gods & Monsters with the experimental guitarist Gary Lucas. The band became a hip name, yet their life-span was short. Buckley began a solo career playing clubs and coffeehouses, building up a considerable following. Soon, he signed a record deal with Columbia Records, releasing the Live at Sin-e EP in November of 1993. It received good reviews, yet they didn't compare to the raves Buckley's full-length debut, 1994's Grace, received. Unlike the EP, the album was recorded with a full band, which gave the record textures that surprised some of his long-time New York followers. Nevertheless, it made several year-end "Best of 1994" lists and earned him a belated alternative hit, "Last Goodbye," in the spring of 1995. A long hiatus followed as Buckley worked on material for his follow-up effort, provisionally titled My Sweetheart, the Drunk. Originally slated to be produced by Tom Verlaine, who later dropped out of the project, Buckley finally began work on the record in Memphis during the late spring of 1997. On the night of May 29, he and a friend travelled to the local Mud Island Harbor, where Buckley spontaneously decided to go swimming in the Mississippi River and leaped into the water fully-clothed. A few minutes later, he disappeared under the waves; authorities were quickly contacted, but to no avail -- on June 4, his body was finally found floating near the city's famed Beale Street area. Buckley was 30 years old. A collection of unreleased recordings, Sketches (For My Sweetheart the Drunk), appeared in 1998, and a live album, Mystery White Boy, arrived two years later. -- Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide ______________________________________________ FREE Personalized Email at Mail.com Sign up at http://www.mail.com/?sr=signup ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 Jun 2000 21:49:30 From: Kenneth Lee Subject: Liz content Hi everyone, "Chasing Amy" has just been released on special edition DVD, and it includes Liz's "California".
