It would be tough doing without Placebo, Ben Folds Five and the Sneakerpimps but I think I rather lose them than Liz, Hole, Beth Orton, Aimee. What about Garbage? Would they go in the male catergory because of 3 men and 1 woman? Damn that would mean I would lose Garbage! In The Last Rock Star Book or Liz Phair: A Rant, Camden Joy suggests that the thieves in Help Me Mary are Liz's boyfriend's friends. I saw that Eminem took over Britney's most sold records, I don't know who's worse. If Eminem is this misogynist homophobe that he is suggested to be, then he sure as hell isn't being a good influence on people. But then Britney is a shit role model. She's basically saying to girls to get breast implants and forget about being intelligent, its' only looks that count! I s'pose at least Eminem isn't manufactured. I read that an Aussie band, the Living End, had a few problems with Eminem on the Vans Warped Tour but Eminem's security guard prevented them from approaching him or something. Does anyone here like the Sneakerpimps? I got their new album, Splinter, last weekend and its pretty good. The male vocals, I'm finding, are better than Kelli Dayton's vocals that they replaced. It's always a scam, and people do it to collect email addresses to build mailing lists. Email mailing lists are a hot commodity. The more you forward those things around, the more likely you are to be spammed. AOL IM isn't going anywhere, the Gap doesn't have anything special for you, and that kid isn't dying of cancer (well, some kid is, but not THAT one), and Bill Gates is not going to give you $1000. Chances are, if you run across something authentic, it will be obvious. On another note, Ruthie ... Boston rocks and all, but i truly feel for you as far as the housing situation goes. It really blows around these-here parts. I'm way old to be a student, so I'm sorry, can't help you there. Don't know where you need to live, if you have a car, or where you're considering, but for cheaper, less in-the-thick towns that are still relatively accessible by public transportation, consider Medford, Malden, Dorchester (some parts are really nice; it's up and coming), and Jamaica Plain. And I know you said you've been to all the big web sites, but make sure that bostonapartments.com is on your list. Although i haven't used it in a couple of years, to be honest ... good luck. sandra ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 2 Jun 2000 09:32:11 -0400 (EDT) From: Catherine Lewis Subject: the AOL-IM nonsense > Our America online staff is planning to take away IM by July 14th, 2000. I love jazz, folk, rock, and some pop. I'll admit that Nirvana was a great band. I just have always looked up to women. I have always wanted to become a musician like a Sheryl/Ani/Sarah/Liz. Both of Juliana Hatfield's new albums are wonderful. Can't say enough good things about them. Total System Failure is the kind of album that makes you want to "turn the volume on your stereo up to full blast just to piss off the neighbors" with it's full guitar onslaught. Then, Beautiful Creature is just that, a beautifully constructed album that shows the softer side of her. I especially love "Somebody Is Waiting For Me", which to me sounds very much like classic Beatles stuff. It's actually one of my favorite songs to be released this year from any artist. I'm glad she released two albums. That way we get some great new "experimental" stuff along with classic Juliana. Liz content? I she doesn't move to L.A. It's just kind of cool being able to say Liz Phair only lives 2 hours from me. Plus, if she moves to L.A. I doubt she'll be playing as many concerts in Chicago as she has in the past. Then again since she has family here, who knows. Come on Liz...PLEASE DON'T GO! I will quickly plead ignorance to Eminem as far as what he's done or even who he is. But I couldn't believe what you wrote in your post describing him. Rap has been around for a couple decades now and you believe that it isn't until now (trying to hold back "until some white guy"...) that it is speaking from the people and expressing the views other than the upperclass? Have you heard of Public Enemy? De La Soul? I could name thirty more from the 80's alone but I feel like I've already named more than I need to. Although I believe Public Enemy is racist and I don't agree with all their views, they did an amazing job of putting together great music with strong messages. They singlehandedly managed to both strengthen the beliefs and solidarity of those people that they describe in their songs as well as teach people, who otherwise had no idea people dealt with these issues, a whole nother way of life and experience in America. So whatever Eminem manages to pull off, it's too late for him to bring in this new concept called 'rap' to teach the masses because that has already been done. You're recycling ideas that were stated twenty years ago. Gabe __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Thinking about this debate over which would I choose, I've realized that most of my lyrical favorites are women (there are definitely exceptions like Leonard Cohen and Dylan) and that most of my musical favorites are men (with fewer exceptions). Now there are a couple theories that I've come up with for this and please bash or add to them: 1) Women have always had it harder in the music scene so is it that it's harder for a woman to make it based on musical achievements and abilities? Basically, a woman is still the only person who can sing a female lead (although Evan Dando has done it) but there isn't a difference (that i know of) if a guy or girl is playing a guitar so does it fall back on sexism in music that causes this (just like you hear about and see more male painters than female painters)? 2) Is it that women are more verbal than men so they can express themselves with words easier? It's a stretch but this could cause men to be more apt to express themselves using music. It also could be that these instruments are extensions of his penis as the cause :). *disclaimer* I just want to quickly say that I am referring to generalities and what has occured with society not a particular person's abilities. so there you have it. I'll be interested to hear other people's thoughts on this. Gabe __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo!
