I feel like everybody who's reading this know that like, Dylan and John Lennon and Kurt and Liz are like now our dadaist or whatever... they're the artists now, and that's why I want to quickly talk about eminem one more time. Understand that I am doing this, not to respond to anybody else's opinions, but to "bring a new artist to the list." I ask two things: you forget, for the moment, how I messed up the other day and you go listen to the marshall mathers lp the whole way through and think about what eminem is doing. ***I did compare Eminem to Kurt Cobain. I still do. I think that he is the most like kurt since he died than anybody else. This was hard for me to admit for a while... it's like, I didn't want to like somebody who was at #1 on TLR or whatever, especially not a rapper...especially not Vanilla Ice. But when I really start thinking about artists and what they've been doing, Eminem is one. Obviously, I feel like he's misunderstood, and the way he doesn't want anyone to know what he really thinks reminds me SO MUCH of Warhol...anyone who's read/seen an interview with him knows what I'm talking about. Let me give you an exapmle; this one time he was being (Andy) such a dick, that the reporter asked him "So, you were born..." (whatever his birthday is) and Andy goes "I don't know; but if you tell me a date I'll say that for you." And if anyone has seen "Don't look back," the video of Dylan's tour of england (That ended in the royal albert hall concert) will realize that Eminem is a lot like him. Anyway, basically, people are responding who they think will be the voice of the 00's. You can already guess who I think, but I'll tell you why. The "voice" has ALWAYS been a reaction. The beats (transition from painting->words, poetry->lyrics) were reacting to the black+white of the 40's and the hippies.. we all know. The punks were basically nihilists pissed off and reacting to the hippies, and kurt was a reaction to mysoginists and dicks. (or whatever... you know). I feel like rap is the reaction, now. - ---Just an interruption, here. Tolstoy was a good reader, but Dostoevsky was a freaking genius. The reason is that Tolstoy was talking about the aristocracy, but Fyodor was talking about the serfs and lower rungs of aristocracy. He was REACTING...and that's what i think rap is doing. Everyone says that, and until I started listening to Eminem I didn't want to accept it, because I wanted people like Liz Phair and YoLa Tengo to be the "voices," but they won't be. There isn't enough completely depressing dispair on the same level for all girls as all minorities in the country, and that's rap's voice..i think after that will be a "gay" music, once the country has gotten to the point of "Accepting gays" (The way they "accept" minorities now). That's next decade, though, and I think for now it's rap. IT's like peasants pissed off they have to live how they do. Rap is like folk music. It's about the words, and the music is the background... it seems obvious to me, now. Sorry for interrupting again. I was just responding... I really hope that you'll consider what I have to say.. i don't know. it seems weird to fight shit like this... like, it makes so much sense to be like "yeah, that's cool, like.. they're creating art, too." I say that, understand, that there's a difference between intelligent rap and shit like Cysqo... it's like, the difference between herman's hermits and the beatles... like, if you close your eyes, you can almost convince yourself that "mrs brown, you've got a lovely daughter" is the beatles... but there's A HHUGE difference. anyhow. bye. i hope i make some sense.. instead of forcing the whole album on you, if you're still interested, you should go read the lyrics to "stan." It's a really amazing song. Or download it off napster (not that eminem would want that... heck, go piss him off and do me a favor (-: ) tim. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 01 Jun 2000 08:03:05 CDT From: "nacho bell grande" Subject: Re: support-system-digest V3 #147 PS - this is soo weird. I can remember being on this list when I first heard Nina left the band..at the time, I heard the band flat out broke up. Me too. I remember still being in high school, that in itself seems years away. but i was leaving the parking lot and i heard it on the radio. it was a sad ride home that day. < Subject: 3DD >>Im thinking about that band "3 Doors Down". That "kryptonite" single is really good, and it isnt really a "formulated" song like everything nowadays seems to be. this is really the only song that ive heard from this band, but from what i have heard, the music is awesome, it means something, and is a departure from the crap that radio has been playing lately<< I agree with you completely on this. Buy the album is all I can say. I posted months ago when their album first came out and I said it was the best album I've ever bought from a new band. Every single song is great, especially "Loser" and "Down Poison". Saw them live twice, going to see them for a 3rd time on my birthday. Their awesome live and are a very powerful live band. This is the band to watch people. This is going to be the next big band, mark my words. Craig NP: Earth To Andy - Chronicle Kings __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Could we bend the rules around a little bit Jorge? ;) Pick one genre, but can have one band from the other? I'd pick the females, since they take up majority of my CD collection, but I MUST have my Beatles with me! It seems as though I've been dreaming too much lately. Too much sugar or what? The scariest dream I had was some guy from N'Sync threatening to leave the band cuz he got sick of it all and "wanted to kill the music." *gasp* I'm dreaming about N'Sync?! *barf* I'm waiting for another Nirvana, I want another Nirvana. Looking forward to meeting the Liz Phesters in two weeks. Hopefully I'll be on my best behavior, since this weather is driving me nuts. I don't think we need to hold our breath yet. Most decades (as well as their spokesmen) are not defined until very late on (the 80's and 90's were defined about midway through but most others were in the last three years). So with that in mind, there could be some kid walking into a music store and picking up his first guitar that could become our spokesman before this decade is up.
