He mentions Chuck D, Aimee Mann and Michelle Shocked, but it could also apply to Liz. In response to what someone said about the unlikelyhood of Liz's latest album coming out the end of this year... I think it's still quite possible. Granted, most record companies want to push for a lot of sales on high demand artists during the holidays. But perhaps this would be an opportunity for Liz to sell more albums (obviously another topic completely... "How popular do we want Liz to become?"). Still, it should be interesting when it does arrive. I'm going to try not to anticipate too much. As we all know with 'whitechococolatespaceegg', a release date with one person is nothing compared to the date we actually see the album on record store shelves. That might not be the best of places for you if you're tired of the rain... Terrible lot of rain going on in these parts too. Good time for Tori Amos... The new Liz album...somebody had said something about it seeming unlikey that it be released late in the year..i never even thought about that, but you're right. The only things that typically come out around this time are absoloute garbage. I mean in my opinion. I'm sure there's an exception to ever case of course. Maybe it'll be released at that time intentionally, as though to challenge the system or something. Hey, one can dream right? I'm going to be in Chicago (flying in from Vancouver) for almost a week at the end of June. I can't remember who all the Lizters are there but I'd love to meet some of you. Who all lives there? My buddy and I are flying on vacation to go to the Dave Matthews shows at Soldier Field but after that we've got an open slate for a couple of days before we go home so we're up for anything. Oh yeah, and we're not gay but we don't care if anyone else is though, as long as they like to drink. Mike Marlatt ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 26 May 2000 15:03:06 -0400 (EDT) From: Riot Poof Subject: off topic, but IMPORTANT! Eminem. Hi everyone, i am *so* sorry for posting this off topic political stuff to the lists...but i think it's actually quite ON-topic especially for the sleater-kinney list (considering the subject matter of AHOTBO)...and since this shit is going on in the music industry...anyways...please, DONT BUY THE NEW EMINEM ALBUM. it contains extremely homophobic (see snippet from GLAAD below) and sexist lyrics...please do not support the career of a jerk like this. also, please take time out to write a letter to his manager. the only reason im sending this to you all is because i want to get it out to as many people as possible, and i am making the assumption (solely based on your musical taste-haha, i know that's a bit ridiculous) that this is an impt issue of many of you too...and please send this on to others...thanks :) steve * "Musical gay bashing doesn't sound so good" - From GLAAD The Marshall Masters LP, the newest release from hip hop artist Eminem, carries the warning "Explicit Lyrics." That is an understatement. Eminem's lyrics are soaked with violence and full of negative comments about many groups, including lesbians and gay men. A sample of the lyrics geared toward LGBT community members include: "You faggots keep egging me on 'Til I have you at knifepoint, then you beg me to stop" "My words are like a dagger with a jagged edge That'll stab you in the head whether you're a fag or les Or the homosex, hermaph or a trans-a-ves Pants or dress Hate fags? The answer's yes ^J" "Hey, it's me, Versace Whoops, somebody shot me And I was out checking the mail Get it, checking the male?" While Eminem certainly has the freedom of speech to rap whatever he wants, it is irresponsible for UNI/Interscope Records as a company to produce and promote such defamatory material that encourages violence and hatred. This is especially negligent when considering the market for this music has been shown to be adolescent males, the very group that statistically commits the most hate crimes. GLAAD calls upon UNI/Interscope to stop and think of the consequences of publishing such material and for it to raise its standards for what products it produces and what artists it promotes. These standards should include not helping exalt hatred and violence. Also, please let Eminem know that he needs to be responsible for the messages his music sends out. Holding the LGBT community up as a target for abuse is unnecessary to sell records. He recently told MTV that he does not hate gays, but his lyrics speak for themselves. Let Eminem know how such disregard for others can lead to discrimination, physical abuse and even death. He can be reached through his manager.
