Girls Room Tour To Feature Tara MacLean, Kendall Payne May 2, 2000, 9:30 am PT There's no Lilith Fair this summer, but several Capitol recording artists are going to attempt to fill some of the gap in female solidarity left by its absence. Canadian folk-pop singer/songwriter Tara MacLean, fellow Canadian Kendall Payne (both Lilith veterans), Massachusetts native Amy Correia, and Shannon McNally (who was discovered by Cowboy Junkies' Margo Timmons) have joined forces for the Girls Room tour. A free tour, Girls Room will kick off July 10 in Seattle and continue through an Aug. 8 date in Los Angeles. Before each gig, a contest will be held to choose an opening act, one of which will be flown to Los Angeles to record a demo at the Capitol Records studios (the acts on the Girl Room bill will choose their favorite opener at the end of the tour) as well as open the final L.A. show. In addition to the opening acts, several celebrity guests will be invited down to each show to perform a few songs of their own. Look for the possibility of Liz Phair at the Chicago show and Juliana Hatfield at the Boston show. Additionally, money will be donated to a local charity in each market and fans will likely be asked to donate food and clothing items as well. Oh BABY!! THe Veruca Salt show at the Shelter last night (thurs night) was nothing short of FANTASTIC!! The Canadian band Starling opened, and they were actually pretty damn good, in a good ole Weezer sorta way... anyway, the lights go down around 10:20 or so...about 150 people, most likely less - I am hyping it - were in the crowd...I was front row, just to the left of Louise herself! at any rate - she walked out with her band, wearing this pretty little long sweater/glitter dress thing, really nice, darker hair...she gained a noticable amount of weight, but was sexier than anything, I swear!!! She was a rocker beyond belief!! In a true old school way...like - circa 1993/94. Absolute MAGIC, i thought. She walked out, grabbed the Mic and screamed: "All RIGHT! VERUCA SALT 2000!!!!!!!!" and with that, the opening riff to "VICTROLA" started... and the set list goes: "VIctrola" "Volcano Girls" - the best part was "The seether is MEEEE!!" as she pointed to her chest!! "Used to Know Her" - an ANGRY ANGRY ROcking amazing song..I am assuming it is a new one.. "Don't Make Me Prove It". *** at this point she said how last the time she toured Detroit was one of her favourite stops, but a reviewer gave her a really bad write up...she then said: "So this is for him..I will say as many cuss words as I want..." then she opened up her top, exposing a black bra... "And I will molest and grope my own breasts as much as I want...and love it...and he can be sorry - that he's not!" Then she broke into: "Born Entertainer" - I am pretty sure it was this song..I recognized all the Yeah yeah yeah's!! "I LOVE YOU" - again, a brand new amazingly rocking song, I am guessing at the title, only because she said it so much in the song.. "SPIDERMAN" - This was my highlight..actually she prolly sang it earlier on..but hell - it was up there.. She then thanked a guy for sending her some flowers and said "Now listen..I would like to point out that this (pointing to new singer-girl) is NOT NINA. This is Suzanne...." and then Suzanne said: "Ya, if you wanna find Nina - go to LITE FM - Sara McLaughlin hour!!" and Louise laughed and said "I don't know where Nina is..and I don't care.." and they broke into "TAKING EUROPE WITH ME" - which was a highlight.. "ALL HAIL ME" - a true classic "SHutterbug" "CElebrate You" - another classic "Hellraiser" - a new song..amazing.. "STRAIGHT" they left the stage - not before Louise grabbed my hand that is (YIPEE!) and after a few mins, she came back wearing the cutest pig tails EVER just her and her guitar and she sang a new song.. "PRETTY BOYS" -this was interesting because there was a part in the song where she says something like "1 summer ago...Me, Nina and a drummer..." and then she said something about how that drummer was better than the one they have now...!! It was crazy...anyway, the band came back on after the beautiful PRETTY BOYS song..and they ended with, of course, "SEETHER!" and that was it... It was absolutely brilliant. After seeing this show, it is proof that Louise was always in full control of VERUCA SALT - and the fact that Nina left - is going to have little to no bearing whatsoever on the rocking aspect of the band. Louise knows how to ROCK OUT in a major way!! SHe was nothing short of amazing. at any rate - I am still very eager to Hear NINA's new album...but damn it - May 16th, I am going to be first in line for "RESOLVER" the new Veruca. Everyone - if you can get a chance - check them out... It's fucking pathetic what the masses crave. Thumbing through a recent Billboard magazine proved to be a real downer for Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails. Reznor has never been known as rock's resident optimist, but he was genuinely depressed upon seeing the number of "mindless, lowest-common-denominator rock bands and teen acts" that rule the top of the charts. "It really is a terrible situation right now," said Reznor, whose continued effort to bring an artistic sensibility to rock 'n' roll comes at a time when artlessness is king. ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V3 #120 ************************************
