I was so excited to see the new 'Veruca Salt' single when I had my college radio show a few weeks ago and then I played it and was like...damn, I WANTED to like that, and i still didn't. I've heard some of Nina's new stuff, it's WONDER-FRIGGIN-FUL. Also, I too got the Tracy Bonham album, it's more pop than Burdens was, but yeah, I also think it is quite a nice piece of work. Oh yeah, and there is no comparing Liz with Cat Power...how could Liz have EVER been that shy when she has the personality in her to write lyrics like she does...Cat Power is good to fall asleep too, it's pretty, but Liz is the real deal. But I got very depressed listening to them. She was talking about Lilith Fair and the fact that women were finally starting to get respect and sucess in pop music, and it just reminded me how long ago that moment was, and how sexist, homophobic crap like rap/metal has taken over. And preceding this moment was grunge. I will say though, that Kurt Cobain was right, the future of rock is women, and this should still be the case. Now the only role for women is as a whore, groupie, topless, or bimbo. or maybe I should say the status quo has asserted itself, women have never gotten a lot of respect in pop music, and that this one moment in the mid to late 90's was too good to last. I want it back, I want women to be where they were back then. It's not right, and it's not fair. That's why I wrote my book, Sheila Brown In Love And At Work in it is where gays, lesbians, women and everyone marginalized by all these macho men rebels and takes over alternative rock. The book focuses on one band, Great Big Something, and their role in this uprising, and the relationships in it. And I wish the scene in this book was real, and that the bastards were on the run. It's actually Jewel who's singing. Actually, it's not Jewel. The singer is Chantal Kreviazuk, who is quite popular here in Canada and whose second album was just released in the US. The song is from the same soundtrack as that inescapable Aerosmith song from about a year ago (I'm gapping on the names of both, but my friend Jeanette's sister has the CD and I've had to listen to it more times than I care to remember). >I've also come accross "Thats the >way I like it", the disco song, with her name attached to it. I can kind of >understand the Jewel thing (OK, not really) but "thats the way I like it (uh >uh)"?? Actually, Liz performed a medley of her own song "Oh My God" and her re-write of "That's the Way I Like It" on MTV's Squirt TV back in '96. The mp3 is likely just a recording of this. At one point, Liz had promised a "Beck-like" version of "That's the Way I Like It" back when she first started recording what ultimately became _whitechocolatespaceegg_. There's been no word on if a studio recording of it was ever completed, but maybe it'll turn up as an unreleased track on a box set years from now. Perhaps along with "Blood Keeper." And maybe those darn John Henderson session tapes. And some Girly Sound stuff. It would be swell to see the version of "Flower" from the Lounge Ax show, performed with this list's own Katie Brown, receive an official release as well (heck, I'd even lend my original recording of the show).... Maybe that's a new thread to ponder: If a Liz box set were ever to be released, what rare material or demos would you want to see included? I am still scarred by the horror that was Vitamin C. Anyway...in all honesty... it wouldn't surprise me a single bit if Nina does go pop...polished sound, etc. I always preferred Louise's songs anyway, I thought they were more rocking... I mean, Louise wrote stuff like "Venus Man Trap", "Don't Make Me Prove It", "Shutterbug" "All Hail Me", "Victrola" etc... Whereas Nina always wrote more of the softer or polished songs anyway... "Forsythia", the painful "Awesome", and the ultra-poppy "Volcano Girls". My favourite Nina-moment (as per songwriting) had to be her incredible "Earthcrosser." I worship this song... anyway.. Girls Room Tour To Feature Tara MacLean, Kendall Payne May 2, 2000, 9:30 am PT There's no Lilith Fair this summer, but several Capitol recording artists are going to attempt to fill some of the gap in female solidarity left by its absence. Canadian folk-pop singer/songwriter Tara MacLean, fellow Canadian Kendall Payne (both Lilith veterans), Massachusetts native Amy Correia, and Shannon McNally (who was discovered by Cowboy Junkies' Margo Timmons) have joined forces for the Girls Room tour. A free tour, Girls Room will kick off July 10 in Seattle and continue through an Aug. 8 date in Los Angeles. Before each gig, a contest will be held to choose an opening act, one of which will be flown to Los Angeles to record a demo at the Capitol Records studios (the acts on the Girl Room bill will choose their favorite opener at the end of the tour) as well as open the final L.A. show. In addition to the opening acts, several celebrity guests will be invited down to each show to perform a few songs of their own. Look for the possibility of Liz Phair at the Chicago show and Juliana Hatfield at the Boston show. Additionally, money will be donated to a local charity in each market and fans will likely be asked to donate food and clothing items as well.
