Kim" Subject: Looks and Music I think one's looks often pigeonhole one into categories. As much as music tailors the way a person chooses to appear, the appearance of a person can affect the music that person chooses to listen to (but not the music that *speaks* to that person). I guess it's more of a function of societal prejudices than anything else. Liz Phair's music is the way it is because of her experiences in life as a person who just happens to look like Liz Phair. I don't think a virgin would be writing music like Liz, nor a man, nor someone who didn't study art at Oberlin college. Of course, other factors played a part: the fact that her parents were affluent and educated, that she lived in a suburb of Chicago and San Fran, the list goes on. Anyway, i've been skimming the digests for the past few months so maybe i'm addressing the wrong issue. - --- dennis www4.ncsu.edu/~djkim2 ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 25 Apr 2000 22:43:07 PDT From: "Robert Hart" Subject: Courtney vs. Liz -and- Heathers 2 Courtney is an icon..... that is very true. How grounded is she? after all she bore kurt cobain's son. You can debate all you want about Courtney the role-model, Courtney the actress, Courtney the musician, Courtney the collaborist. The fact of the matter is that she is who she is - unique. She has led one hell of a life thus far, and sure I bet she is till trying to figure everything out. I would be too. Liz appears to know more of what she wants, but hey, does it matter? Just enjoy the art.... On the subject of Heathers 2, after reading a bit on the current plan, I hope they do not put out a sequel. The original was brilliant. Too often these days studios attempt to cash in on earlier success and produce crap. I would hate to see a mediocre film out there - after all Winona has made plenty of bad films lately, Girl Interupted not withstanding. Veronica in college, trying to escape the Heathers again? Not just no, but hell no. OK, i dont want to pick on you (this is sorta like a final straw thing cuz i get upset when people say stuff like this in general), and i know im a lurker so i shouldnt feel free to randomly spew, but i have to say something. when i see "some chick" who's really thin, i dont think "GROSS ANOREXIC!" i find it interesting that you dont say "Yuck..anorexic" about liz (who, when i saw her in july, looked a great deal thinner than the average woman, as PJ does -- not that that means they're anorexic...they're bodies could totally just be that way. but back to my point) So what, you dont say "Ewww" to liz because you think she's pretty? it's ok for a "pretty girl" to be thin and please everyone's eyes, but girls who are "homely as hell" and thin it's "Oh god, not another yucky anorexic"?? what? I dont get that? This reminds me of that dumb "Cute Anorexic Girls" ad for the tv show "Friends." it's like saying "If i think you're ugly and you are really thin--you're disgusting! if i think you're a HOTTIE, but really thin...eh, that's ok! you're still a hottie!" why is anorexia being thrown in with all these physical features anyways?!? that always irritates me so much. Anorexia is a serious disorder, and should not be considered a disgusting attribute. i cant stand it when people say something like "ewww gross..she is SOO anorexic". Show a little bit of consideration for those who suffer from it; the last thing they need to hear is that people think they're gross. oh, and again i just wanna say that I'm not saying that PJ and Liz are anorexic...that could very well be the way their bodies are...i was just making a point. i know anorexia is a touchy issue and i shouldnt go on about it on a liz phair email list....so i sincerely apologize if i upset anyone by going on about this. next... I happen to think polly jean harvey is much more pretty on the outside than liz. one of my biggest pet peeves is when my friends--or anyone else for that matter--says "PJ's music is good...but you have to admit, she's so ugly." you know what? NO. I loved when PJ got dressed up in drag with the tight body suit, cleavage, huge hair 10 lbs of makeup and 3 inch eyelashes (yeah, i considered that drag even if it wasnt cross gender--it was so far off from the PJ she expressed to us with promotion and content of her first three albums) for her "To bring you my love" tour. the exaggerated femininity was a riot. Gosh, even the music on the album was "draggy" in a way. PJ Harvey singing about how her life will be completely ruined and she might as well just die if some dumbass who left her won't come back to her is like fred durst singing "i didn't really do it all for the nookie, i valued the deep emotional connections we had too." on his next album. Anyways, the point i think she was trying to make with her getup was that she ISNT beautiful by mainstream society's standards, and who fucking cares because that's all bullshit anyways, hence the absurd exaggeration of her "feminine" features. to this day, polly jean harvey via 1995 = my favorite drag queen. :) i will never forget the day my best friend's roommate looked at the cover of my TBYML and said "EW! who's the guy in drag?!" *satisfied smile* ok sorry for this second rant....PJ Harvey--she knows what's up. As for Freeway 2, it has to be one of the worst movies ever! "Let's not drink this bad dog water anymore, white girl!" haha WHY did they make that movie??? WHAT WAS WITH ALL THE PUKING?? it really really scared me. Freeway 1, on the other hand, is one of my all-time faves. i think it makes some fabulous social statements too. I love it. (i take a lot of shit for saying that, but wahtever, reese kicks all ass in it!) ahhh i just got back from my 2nd Nine Inch Nails show this month! (i like trent reznor...i dont care if he's a whiney bitch, he makes awesome music and he's one hot motherfucker--AND NOBODY DISAGREE WITH ME OR I'll YELL AT YOU!--hahaahahaha.) instead of typing up a review of the show for my friends (and showering the grime off me from the nasty crowd), im ranting on the liz list. sorry:) steve "I hope you think of me every time you go to empty that fucking shit bag motherfucker!" But as far as the "perfect body" thing goes i just have to deface this as much as possible. This is like..an absoloutly awful thing..because i dunno about you, but i don't know ANYONE who is built like Miss. Polly Jean Harvey. Because she makes it a habit to show her tits and start fights? Because she was married to Kurt Cobain? Now i'm not saying that her success lies withing the name of her husband or anything, but don't tell me i'm the only one that wonders what sort of influence that had on things. >That is all courtney has ever done since the day she got into the >music >business. the whole female movement, and the entire concept >that it is ok >for a woman to be sexy and out there, instead of all >conserative and shy. >she did all that. I for some reason find the attribution that Courtney did "all that" to be completely false. I don't know that Courtney made as much of an impact on music as we know as some would like to think. There were many before her and even many after that said more than she did and didn't have to scream and throw a fit to say it. >she is VERY proud of who she is. she is THE courtney love. I mean, I did, and I didn't. what I really wanted to get at is a couple of things. for one, as great as it is that artists want to expand and grow, sometimes it really sucks when they do. it can tend to alienate fans, as happens with me a lot. my two biggest examples: stone temple pilots and pearl jam. I loved the first two albums by both of these bands (maybe not versus so much, but it WAS good). I don't know what happened after that. they changed their sound. they tried to evolve and grow. whatever. the point is that they are no longer making the music I fell in love with. secondly, I have no problem with artists making album after album after album. I hope they do top their "peak" album. I was just trying to state that sometimes the rest of the albums aren't worth being made. I always felt this way about stp's third album, it really upset me, and I know there are a lot of stp fans here. I'm not bashing them, I have the utmost respect for scott weiland & co. it's just that something happened to his voice, to their guitars, that didn't sound like them, like their music got weak. it would be like tool coming out with another album and you come to find out that it sounds like stroke 9 or something. I'd be asking, where is my fucked up tool that I know and love? so, liz has changed, and you know what? in some ways, maybe not in all good ways. but I can almost promise you it had to do with the production on wcse. I didn't see a lot of change from eig to ws. I have heard all of the newer songs and the soundtrack songs, and I have to say, if she is going to rock it out like she does on rocket boy, then she is going in a good direction. if she starts to churn out softer melodies like a lot of wcse, I'm not so sure how I will like it. liz is a rock & roll gal, and I would hate to see her go off on a sarah mclachlan path. Now i'm not saying it's a bad thing for artists to help artists, but it is a bad thing to convince yourself through some remnent of a heroin high that Courtney Love could rise above even a small fraction of others involved in "rock". >> nobody is flipping shit about you because you arent "anyone" yet. clover is THE courtney love. there is like, power to the name, get it? and how can anyone widow gracefully? i just find that ridiculous in a way- she handled it better than most people (except for the excessive drug use, lol). and the whole acting thing- you MUST admit that courtney is a great actress. she is just really good, plain and simple. just because she became known musically, doesnt mean she isnt allowed to act. she started out acting anyways in the 80s. look at madonna- she makes music and acts, but her acting is HORRIBLE! she cant act for shit- at least courtney has a talent for it. if you seriously think that she is a bad actress name a movie for me... and the whole thing about frances bean. your question was "where the fuck is frances bean". ill answer that for you plain and simple- out of the public eye. exactly where she should be. where the fuck do you expect her to be? courtney should be commended for not maker her daughter pay her bills, the way madonna does. that was just a stupid question. and how can anyone deny that courtney is a rocker? she is like, the female rock icon for Christ's sake. id put her way above and beyond tori and pj anyday, as would most. as for eddie and kurt, now that is a different story. first off, they are guys. 2nd off, if it wasnt for them there wouldnt have been a courtney, or a pj, for that matter. about hole having so much help- how do you truly know how much "friggin" help they get? live through this was written by hole, plain and simple. that was a phenomenal record. the only help they received for Celebrity Skin was from billy corgan and he was only there for 12 days out of the 4 years it took to record the album. i dont see where you have come up with all this "friggin" help that they have received for each album. and please, dont interpret this as a fight, because it is totally not. im not mad at you, im just expressing what i feel, ok? ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V3 #111 ************************************
