I didn't know she hated Liz! What does Liz think of her, anyone know? As for if Liz looked different, I would still like her and listen to her. I think she's pretty but that's not why I like her. It's like Placebo, I like them because of their music and it wasn't until after I got into them, that I thought they were good-looking. In alternative music, I think it's nowhere near as much about image as in pop music, where basically image rules. I think women are expected to be goodlooking more than men in alternative music because it's unfortunately (still)patriarchal. I think there's a lot more goodlooking women in alternative music than men but that might be because I think there's more goodlooking women in the world than men. Rob said: > So I ask this question: if Liz looked like > Jabba the Hut, how different would her success (not just commercial) be and > how differently would she be viewed as a musician? I think you brought up a very interesting topic. I think physical appearance has A LOT to do with how successful a musician becomes in terms of popularity. It's the sad truth, but what I feel is truth nonetheless. It's the conditioning that society has bestowed unto us... and it's wrong. I think this rings true when you look at all these boy bands and people like Britney Spears who have very little to offer the music world except their breasts and perfect chicklet teeth. It's quite putrid. The fact that Liz is attractive has definitely helped her, I think. But I keep thinking, if Liz happened not to be aesthetically pleasing, would that change my views about her talent or my love for her music? With that, I think I can honestly say no. I can use Jen Trynin as an example. While I LOVE Jen's music, I know she's not exactly what people consider 'babe' material. I think Jen thinks this as well (per "Under The Knife"). But you cannot deny her talent and her musicianship. She's an original, as is Liz... and both know how to play a mean guitar. In terms of non-commerical success, that would depend on many factors. One of which is how Liz felt about herself. Sometimes personal success is all that matters to a person. If they can make a living out making music, that's an added bonus. I'm not sure if I've made a point here, but these are just my thoughts. Rob's question brought me to at least to the point of expressing it to you people. On a separate subject, although not necessarily Liz-related: has anyone noticed the wide range of CD prices out there for various artists? I bring this up because I recently purchased Tracy Bonham's "Down Here" at a mere $8.99 brand new at a store that is known for being insanely high-priced. I was surprised obviously. I remember a few years before purchasing "The Burdens Of Being Upright" for the same price (I remember weird stuff). In the past I also remember buying Fiona Apple's "Tidal", Ruby's "Salt Peter", and Amanda Marshall's debut all for similar prices. Initially I thought that this was due to them being relatively new artists. But now, I'm puzzled. Tracy has been around for awhile... why still sell her album at such a low price? She's not on a super-independent label... and she's fairly known for a few of her songs. And now some CDs that used to be standard priced are now ridiculously low at many retailers (I.e. Aimee Mann's first two albums... Liz's "Exile In Guyville"... the list goes on.) Does anyone have an idea why this is? Anyway, I don't know why I think about these things, but I do. :-) Sometimes, Robbie "My lucky number is below one. I didn't even know Liz was hot until I bought WCSE. I mean, Polyester Bride was on the radio and I thoroughly enjoyed it, so I figured 'why not?' and the rest goes down in history. Am I the only one here who bought her albums in reverse order? I got WCSE the summer came it came out, Whip-Smart last May and the gf just bought me Exile in Guyville. EIG is still spinning in the cd player- I've found Liz takes time to grow on me. I think it works in the other direction though. I wonder if I would think she was as attractive if she didn't make such amazing music. It also reminds me of Leanord Cohen's "Chelsea Hotel" which is a song about a brief romance with Janis Joplin and how they may not have the looks but at least they have the music. Also Cyrano De Bergerac is an amazing film and almost good enough for me to like Gerard Depardieu. Which ties this thread to the Fabio one where poor Gerard took some abuse. :) Take care, Gabe __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Send online invitations with Yahoo! In other words, how would the world react to "Look and Run" as opposed to "Fuck and Run?" I think she would attract a sizeable following just as long as she were still able to express, musically, her heartfelt passions. It's just that she would be singing about slightly different life experiences. There's plenty of Angst in not looking like a movie star. That kind of pain could certainly fuel a songwriting career, and I think there'd be a significant audience that could relate to it.
