Ben Lee is on the Letterman repeat that will air on Thursday night. That same night, Elliott Smith will be performing on Conan O'Brien's show. Speaking of, I just picked up his new album this morning and am on my first listen right now. So far it sounds pretty good, but none of the songs seem to stand out the way that _XO_ and _Either/Or_'s best tracks do. Of course, Smith's albums usually take a few listens to completely sink in, so I'm sure by the end of the week, I won't be able to stop raving about it. Has anyone heard anything by Joseph Arthur before? He has a new album out today, and based on the review in Entertainment Weekly, I'm somewhat intrigued. I'd like to hear a few opinions first though, before I part with any of my hard-earned cash. Also reviewed in the new ish of Entertainment Weekly are the new albums by Tracy Bonham and Jill Sobule, two artists that have been mentioned on the list recently. Tracy's album fared better in its review, receiving an A- rating; Jill's album got a B+ and the reviewer said she was like "Aimee Mann's geeky kid sister." Past Liz associate Nash Kato of Urge Overkill has his first solo album out this week as well, but based on the reviews I've read (including one in -- yes, you guessed it! -- Entertainment Weekly) it sounds like one to avoid. However, given that he's a friend of Liz, might there be a chance that she appears somewhere on the album? Does anyone know? Hmmmmm......will have to wait and >see I guess. Okay, you're all going to want to kick my ass because I've been holding out on you with some Liz news. Given that everyone's getting impatient and a lot of people have been asking about the status of the album lately, I guess it's time for me to finally come clean. A little over a month ago I was able to talk to someone who is closely connected with the project and was able to find out quite a few things about the new record. My intention was to notify the list with the news right away. Before I was able to get it together to write a post, though, I shared a few of the tidbits with Nora, Steve, Ken Lee and a couple of the others who hang out in #wcse. Ken posted the news to his site while waiting for me to post it to the list, but received an e-mail from the person I had talked to not long afterwards. I had mentioned the mailing list and the fact that I was the listowner to this person, and he was still very forthcoming with information and seemed cool about answering any questions I had. I assumed that given this, it would be alright for me to pass this news along. Big mistake. Although in the past, Matador staff and people like Brad Wood haven't minded being quoted in relation to Liz news (and have at times encouraged it), this person did not want to have their name used in reference to any information about the album. This person had already been quoted once before on Ken's site, in reference to news passed along by another list member, so he e-mailed Ken about both instances and Ken wrote him back to say that he would remove his name as the person being quoted in regards to the news (which itself can still be found on the site). After that I felt like a bit of a jerk, having automatically assumed it would be alright for me to pass the news along to everyone and I decided to not bother saying anything to the list. For all I know, he could be subscribed and I did not want to risk offending him again. Ken mentioned that this person found it disconcerting that a private conversation that took place in a club was now recounted on the web for all to see and I really can see his point. At the same time, I know everyone is dying to find out what's going on with the new album, especially given the fact that we've heard so little since that piece in Alternative Press a while back. Also, one of the main purposes of this list is to share information with other fans when it becomes available. So, in the interest of all that, I will pass along what I know, although as on Ken's site, I will not name my source. First off, I was told that Liz had recorded basic tracks for 16 songs late last year and this person seemed quite excited about all of them. When the album is finally released, we can probably expect to hear many of the new songs that Liz performed live last year, including "Bouncers' Conversation," "Don't Apologize" and "Firewalker." Also, I asked whether the e-mail sent to the list supposedly from Liz was authentic or not, and it seems that it almost definitely was Liz or perhaps her manager who does have another band (Buckcherry, I think he said) on DreamWorks, where the e-mail originated. The real proof, though, is that there really is a song called "My Mistake" and I was able to get the lyrics that were posted confirmed. Another interesting tidbit has to do with some of the lyrics to the song that weren't posted: the "mistake" is "that I'm married." What I was also able to gather is that the album wasn't put on hold indefinitely while Liz is being a "soccer mom;" to me it came across as that she had already did a lot of work and was just taking a break before finishing, although at that time there was no idea of when that would be. But given how much had already been done, my guess is that perhaps it won't take that long for the record to be completed. And last we heard, Liz was still looking for a producer.... Ice Magazine, a publication with a comprehensive listing of upcoming release dates has nothing listed for Liz just yet, but my guess is that the album won't be out this spring, although this summer seems quite possible. The news I heard is over a month old, but even if Liz has finished the album in the meantime, there's usually about a three month gap between when a record is completed and when the label puts it out, during which time the mastering and artwork is finalized and the publicity machine gears up, tour dates are booked, etc. Also, another thing to keep in mind is that even when the record is completed, there could be a delay if the label doesn't like it and wants Liz to rework some of the tracks, such as with _whitechocolatespaceegg_. I feel pretty confident that we will see a new Liz album by the end of the year, though. >I just saw that Aimee Mann will be in Las Vegas on May >23 at The Joint, which is right smack dab in the >middle of my vacation there. I'll finally get to see >Aimee live! :D The official site says something >about the show being part of an Aimee/Michael Penn >acoustic vaudville tour. Does anyone know anything >about that? I take it that means it will just be an >all acoustic show? All of the shows Aimee and Michael have been doing this year are in what they've coined as "acoustic vaudeville"-format. Aimee and Michael generally play acoustic guitars on their own songs, but the rest of the band is electric. They usually back each other on bass, Buddy Judge plays electric guitar, John Sands is on drums and Patrick Warren on keys. I know some people have complained in the past about Buddy's playing overpowering Liz's at her shows and not being able to hear her guitar, but after seeing him play with Aimee and Michael, I think that's something Liz decided *she* wanted. Buddy's playing with Aimee and Michael is understated and adds just the right amount of colorization to the songs. He's still as creative as ever, though. Aimee and Michael take turns performing a few of their own songs before trading off to the other and they keep that up throughout the entire show. It's not a matter of one performer or the other being the headliner or the opening act. They also both have an aversion to having to come up with stage banter, so they have a comedian who comes out between songs to do it for them while they retune, switch instruments or whatever. I've heard that it's somewhat hit and miss, depending on the comedian (they usually have a different one for each show), but the one in Toronto was great. Some highlights of the show I was at included Michael and Aimee trading verses on his "No Myth" during the first encore, Michael playing the part of the asshole boyfriend and reciting the dialogue from the video during "Voices Carry," and Aimee dancing around Michael and trying to get him to flub the lyrics to "Brave New World," which would be difficult to sing at the best of times. Aimee's "Long Shot," "Red Vines," "Save Me," and "Ghost World" were all highlights as well, and she performed a killer version of "It's Not Safe" to open the show (I hadn't imagined it would be so powerful given the switch from electric guitar to acoustic). Michael's "Try," "High Time," and "Out Of My Hands" were all standouts during his sets. One last thing: one of the most beautiful things I have ever heard is the sound of Michael and Aimee's voices harmonizing. I still get goosebumps thinking about it.
