[FYI: it seems like most people have figured this out, but when i react, especially "negatively," to something, it's to the *post* and not the *person*. i mean "you" in a general sense; like "one does this" or something. i pointedly attacked one person once and it was horrible and i'll never do it again. yuk. i understand the confusion because my opinions are pretty strong, but i'm just shooting bullets into the air. i'm just hoping to get discussion going....] OK, that said, i'm reacting more to the fact that, and now especially since hilary won the oscar, the real true issues (the devastation of sexual abuse) are just left in the dust because it's so easy to latch onto what's "positive" about this whole thing. i honestly don't believe for a single second that teena brandon was "joyful" in her choice. i think teena had strength, but it wasn't to expressly go out and boldly make people aware of transgender issues, like, i dunno, rupaul or something. she was just tryin' to hold herself together and carry on. and, again, that in itself was heroic. (as it is for anyone else dealing with these things.....) and something you said in your response; that's IT, that's what i'm talkin' about: this is how people are gonna *get to know her* and it ISN'T REALLY TRUE. not *really.* what's more, this choice to show her as trying to live out her "truth" as a man rather than out of dealing with sexual abuse--think about this: it's actually quite disrespectful. it's disrespectful of her pain. i think that's wrong. THAT'S why her mom is angry. i sort of get the feeling that people think the mom just needs to "get over it" because, hey, the movie of her daughter's life is so successful and important and blah, blah, blah...... i mean, do i even have to explain this? just as an aside, kimberly pierce actually *did* make a documentary of teena brandon's life.... a little-seen art-house film that came out about 2 years ago. i'm sort of wondering if they'll rerelease it now because of all the hoopla--or won't--for the same reason. and, if i recall, lana and teena's mom weren't too happy about that one, either. so, it's probably a no-go.... i don't know for a fact how likely it is that teena may have been genetically male--it is definitely possible (this sort of thing is more common than most people think) and may have helped her shape her solution--but we know that she *was* sexually assaulted and, again, that is HUGE. the issues the film raises are indeed timely, necessary, and important. but because it's based on a real person' life, real events, it's so thorny.... i don't know what the answer is--maybe they could've written something else that had different names, put it in a different town, and then said "yeah, ok, there's this one person who did this and we based it on that...." i don't even know--are they going around saying "we based it on this, but essentially we made our own story; please take it as such"? if they're not, they need to. the reason it got made into a film like this is because what teena brandon did, her response to her situation, was both extreme and unique. and it's the sort of thing that makes people pay eight bucks to see it. this was not lost on kimberly pierce and her distributors. i agree that they saw some important issues in there and rose to the challenge of presenting that--they did indeed make a successful, important piece of art. but they threw alot of stuff onto the *person* that really doesn't belong there, aren't acknowledging it, and then are accepting all the lovely credit and are now moving on to new projects.... meanwhile, teena brandon's mom is sitting in her tract home with her daughter's ashes on a bookshelf. do you see what i'm saying?? these are real people's lives you're dealing with. art is one thing, but sometimes you gotta be careful. i'm not venting because i want to take this movie apart out of pure cynicism; i'm saying this stuff because there are some important distinctions that (i think, anyway) need to be made. i'm actually just trying to be respectful. dp PS: on a much lighter note: hurricane cindy--damn!-- i keep forgetting to say "hi!!" i'm glad you're back and (sounds like) better than ever. Cool!! ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 14 Apr 2000 21:44:52 -0700 (PDT) From: Easter Subject: Apple of the day Ahhh! What a concert tonite! Just came back from the Fiona Apple concert. Uhh...not that I'm overly excited about it or anything, it's nice to be able to go somewhere to listen to live music. It's different for some artists that I listen to. Anyhoo...there is some Liz content in this post though. :) During the show, I noticed the keyboardist looked awfully familiar and I thought to myself, "My...he reminds me of Jebin Bruney." Alas, when Fiona went to introduce the band towards the end of the show, it turned out that it was Jebin after all! Of course, my next thing in mind was to ask him a few questions if I got around to meeting him after the show. The usual...a crowd of people were waiting outside the back door and you get a few "FIONA!" everytime the door opened. Puh-leaze. I noticed her guitarist walked out unnoticed and went right into the Virgin Megastore. Oh well...after a half an hour, Jebin came out and I go to talk to him. Strange, only one other person was talking to him. I asked Jebin if he knew anything about Liz's new album cuz I mentioned I saw him touring with Liz last year. He said he hadn't heard anything but he did go to the studio with Liz to record about 20 demos at the end of last year. The last time he spoke with her was February and she was going back to the studio I guess. He seemed confused about it, since he's not on the album, but knew that Liz wanted to have the album out sometime in March or April. Well, that's what I got from my little chat with Jebin, he seemed please that I asked him about Liz for some reason. He even mentioned that he should give her a call to see how things are doing. Hopefully we'll get some news about the new album shortly!
