To tell you the truth, i like onelist more. Its faster and easier and allows me to sort out my e-mails without going all technical. If you dont like it, that is good for you. I personally love it, and I am not going to get into an argument about something as DUMB as this. Its ridiculous that you are even attempting one on such a stupid topic. Let's just talk about liz, that is what we are supposed to be doing anyways isnt it? some people need to calm down and not take things to heart, geez ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Apr 2000 05:25:50 -0700 (PDT) From: mikey c at yehaw Subject: 'til we outnumber them > From: brian d irby > the first one. Yes, this is being released by Righteous Babe records around May 23rd. It's a one-disc set with various artists performing live some Woody Guthrie material, some songs and spoken word pieces. Springsteen, Indigo Girls, Billy Bragg, Ani DiFranco, David Pirner (**tangential Liz content here?), Arlo Guthrie, acotr Tim Robbins, and a few more. I don't have the review copy in front of me here, so I'm missing a few more. It was recorded in over a weekend in September 1996, at Severeance HAll in Cleveland Ohio. It was a benefit show to raise money for The Woody Guthrie Archives, and was put on in a joint venture between them and the Rock & Roll HoF. DiFranco & Righteous Babe spent about three years trying, and eventually succeeding, to get the rights to put out this disc. It wasn't a fight with the Guthrie or R&RHoF people, but the legal wrangling between the various record companies that own the souls, er, material, of the artists performing. Bragg's performance of "Against The Law" is fantastic, and sounds much like anything he wrote himself. And: > From: Laurel Ann Ullman > This is a film that everyone needs to see. Fascist. The >British wit and style were what I loved most about the book, although >I've heard the movie is very stylish also. I'm about two-thirds through the book so far, but I wanted to comment that if it has british wit and style, then we americans and brits must be more alike than we like to think. aside from mum instead of mom, and a bloke or a shag here and there, I can't tell if the author is a native brit or an american who has lived several years in london. I guess what I'm getting at is that the humor seems pretty universal to me, the situations eerily reminiscent of thoughts and situations I have experienced, and more than anything, the music and movie influences could be from either culture. anyway, unless he really gets into some in-depth descriptions of london in this last third, I really think you could set the book in most any large city stateside or across the ocean. on another note, I saw that "american psycho" is coming out this friday. I'm kinda nervous about how they will do this film. let's just say it is a fascinating book, but I doubt very much that they will be able to convey in this film the underlying context of the novel. at least leo isn't playing the lead. jake ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Apr 2000 09:51:27 -0400 From: Anne Corrigan Subject: new album Hey, I am new to the list so I don't know whether you guys mentioned it or not...but Liz's next album is supposedly due out this Spring right, is there any more specific of a date yet? They wouldn't SHUT THE FUCK UP!! Her stories, which would have been interesting - were blocked out by constant "wooooooooo hooooooooooooo's" and "I love you tracy..." and "Sing 'ONe Reason'!!!!!!!" it was brutal! Like, I have NEVER seen such a lack of respect for an artist before!!! At one point, a few of the hardcore fans infront of me were like "SHUT THE FUCK UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUP! SHe's TALKING!! CAn YOU NOT FUCKING HEAR HER TALKING??!?!?" Everyone cheered...go figure. But at any rate - talk about a contrast... I mean, Liz Phair fans show respect, completely. They are totally energetic at the proper times, but still manage not to scream while she's speaking and sharing stories with her fans... I don't know, it tarnished the show some. Tracy completely glowed.... Not to mention the fact that there was a peroxided bimbo girl balancing a glowing tray of test-tube shooters on her breast implants. I swear, I had like, tears of awe in my eyes after Tracy sang "THE PROMISE" - and the first thing I hear is the shooter-girl/bimbo selling shots to some guy saying: "Okay, this one is a 'blue-fucker', this one is a 'peach-moon', this one is 'yagger', this one is a 'blowjob'..." it was just really annoying. I mean, if it were a Blink 182 show, fine. But come on... We don't know the juicy fruit shots to appreciate "Behind the Wall.." Christ. If it were a Liz show, i would have been rioting, and that glowing shooter-tray would have been pitched up to the fucking balconey :) Tracy rocked though.. (or brian--could you say something about them??) well i'm probably not such a great person to describe rainer maria because they didn't neccessarily rock my world. they were good, but my gawd, the band that played before them- DRAGSTRIP SYNDICATE- was friggin awesome, an actual ROCK BAND. not too much discussion about actual rock music on this list it seems, but if you like really straightforward, in your gut, loud-ass guitar rock and roll, they were a treat. nothing pretentious about them, no pantywaist "punk" vocal harmonies, and this was not some "alternative"-but-really-just-invented-for-radio crapola. they reminded me A LOT of the butthole surfers (as they sounded on the "independant worm saloon" album), and when i told the singer-guy that he smiled as though he could receive no higher complement. well, good, because it was supposed to be. we only saw 7 (out of like 80) bands over 2 days of macrock, but i can say they were the only one that inspired me to buy a cd. we arrived late to their show, and i was expectecting nothing, but instead i just lit up from the energy. halfway through the first song i turned to katie like,"whoa...holy shit!" the song they closed with (whatever the hell it was, it hasn't even been recorded yet) knocked me on my ass. aw well, i just had to get that off my chest. i invite anyone to comment on this band if they have heard of them, but i expect only to receive the sound of crickets in return. that's ok. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Apr 2000 12:00:59 -0700 (PDT) From: Easter Subject: Any Sisters of Mercy fans here? I don't know if there's any Sisters of Mercy fans on this list, but hey...this group has a great taste in music and I can always turn to you guys for advice. While I was getting a tattoo yesterday, the guy had a Sisters of Mercy cd on and I'll have to admit, I liked it. Soo...my question is, is it worth checking out their music or no? I cried when I read that, because > Swank really did something incredible with her portrayal: she made Brandon > a person to be celebrated, not to be pitied. She could have made him a > victim; rather, she made him a survivor (figuratively speaking, of course). > i've been sort of following this in the press and it seems that both lana tisdel, "brandon's" girlfriend, and brandon's mom are really pissed about this movie. of course, i was extremely curious as to why. and it's pretty deep, actually, especially what the mom says. she points out that her daughter was molested as a young girl and that becoming a "man" was a way for her to never be harmed again by men. this is a *vastly different* scenario than her becoming a man because that was her "truth." i'm sorry, but the real teena brandon was indeed a victim, she was indeed scared and confused. when you're a victim of abuse, it's an act of bravery and heroism just to get out of bed in the morning and try to pursue a life, trying not to let your hurt and pain spill out all over the place. but that's too boring and mundane to show in a film. and, you know, nobody likes "victims." i'm sure this will start a flame war, and i am in no way discouraging anyone from seeing the film, but keep in mind that it is largely a fictional account of a real person's life. actual emotional realities were tweaked--by the actress herself, for HER OWN REASONS--for the sake of good drama, a good story. something "uplifting." but is it true? i'm serious, if you asked teena brandon if she was pursuing her life in a sense of "joy and exhilaration," she'd probably laugh and say "sure," but she'd be *dying* inside--again. i can understand why teena brandon's mom is pissed--bottom line, her daughter is dead. and she has to relive it--outside of all the kudos and celebration--through the eyes of people who made up her daughter's life. they MADE IT UP. so, it seems this movie is more a triumph for hilary swank as an actress (not that she didn't do a great job) than anything else. you have to separate the film as piece of art, something crafted, out from the true realities of teena brandon's life. you're fooling yourself if you think they're one and the same. like i said, i know she was a hero for just forging on ahead with her life, trying to cope. that's all she was doing and, believe me, it took everything she had. dp ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V3 #96 ***********************************
