[DeadShark@aol] BOYS DON'T CRY ["Luu, Jennifer K" ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Sun, 09 Apr 2000 01:24:12 -0500 From: jimmy Subject: the Moves To Jason and anyone else wondering: The Moves don't sound like Liz at all. There are actually 3 vocalists for the band, as all of the young women trade off duties. I actually just reviewed their CD for the Detroit Metro Times (look for it next week or the week after, for those in the area). They remind me more of a lo-fi Butchies. They're on Mr. Lady Records. xjimmy >>Anyone know anything about a group called The Moves? My local college >>radio station has been playing them a lot today. When I heard them the >>first time, I asked myself "Does Liz Phair have a new record out?". But, >>Gosh No, it's just a vocalist who kinda sounds like Liz. Do they have an >>album out, and if so, is it any good? ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 9 Apr 2000 05:24:30 -0700 (PDT) From: Meow Grrl Subject: wilco/ high fidelity About Wilco, they are definitely working on a Woody II album. I saw them in Boston in November, and Tweedy told the crowd that 2000 would see three new albums from them. Our best guesses were a live album, a new studio release, and Woody II. I know a guy who knows them personally (he also happens to have the exact same b-day as Liz, down to the year, and he's met her before as well ... he's a music writer), and he told me the recording for Woody II was going really well. i've been listless for a while; my email doesn't seem to be getting them, and i took a trip to london (thanks chipko arnold! i'm back in boston now!) ... things still aren't quite back to normal. and val, i'm doing just fine, thanks! about high fidelity (sorry if i'm repeating anything, but like i said, i didn't receive some of the digests) ... i've got advice for you: Read the book. THEN see the movie. The movie pales in comparison to the book, and the movie's spectacular. sandra NP: Old 97s, Too Far to Demo __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I was also constantly looking for the wcse flat during the whole thing and then all of a sudden it just flashes right in the center of the screen. I liked the placement.:) Had it been faster it could have been a subliminal message and liz could sell more albums. Maybe the whole movie was a big fat subliminal ad for cool bands that had posters/stickers in the background. While we're watching john cusack be a general pain in the ass, we're also improving out musical taste without knowing it. oooohhh - ---melissa ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 9 Apr 2000 20:09:53 EDT From: HOLEPARTS@aol.com Subject: other lists yea, im on another list over at onelist. it is called "support system". you all should join. it isnt as active as this one, but if some of you join, it would be. It was amazing, and Hillary Swank deserved that Oscar. I remember reading about Brandon Teena (or Teena Brandon) when she was killed. Very sad. Hillary lived as a man for a month to prepare for the part. Liz content, wish she'd been on the soundtrack. Along with the Smithreens, with the best song they ever did, She's Got A Way, and Nina Person from the Cardigans. Andrea ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 9 Apr 2000 21:00:36 EDT From: DeadShark@aol.com Subject: Desert island? I can barely stand the heat in the kitchen. Wasn't Whip-Smart recorded in The Bahamas? Oh that's not what you meant? Hmmm ... never mind. Anyway, we were discussing music (Yeah, believe it or not) tonight in #wcse and the topic of underappreciated artists came up. Ok, it only lasted a few minutes, but we seem to come back to this subject time and again in there. Usually, it is in regard to this list. And what I mean by that is, I can remember getting tons of info on new artists, old artists, artists whose mother's were on the list and who were pushing them on us (ok, I made that one up), etc. And, usually, the lists wouldn't include a slew of widely recognized talent. Now, before any sensitive types get your panties in a bunch, I'm not saying that recognizing or talking about established/mainstream artists is wrong or is punishable by hours of listening to the entire Matador catalogue. Hell, a large portion of my album collection consists of established/mainstream artists. I am only asking, where have all the cowboys gone? No, strike that (woughly). Where have all of our donators of adventurous musical information gone? I always looked forward to trying out new music suggested by our esteemed list members. Sure, I got burned a few times, but that is the fun of it! Not knowing what the hell you just plunked down $13 for is exciting (and a bit scary, for strapped-for-money folks like myself)! I will wrap up this manifesto by saying that I would be really happy to occasionally see some artists mentioned here who aren't widely recognized the world over for their gifts to music, as well as our tried and true famous favorites. Oh, and one more thing, I do realize that I am at fault here, as well. I hardly ever post, let alone include anything worthwhile within posts. I just like bitching about things. So sue me. And since I opened my big fat mouth, here are some artists/bands, past and present, that I think are particularly swell (note: They aren't obscure at all, dammit!): The Negro Problem -- Not Lame describes them as "Dizzyingly inventive pop music inspired by baroque instrumentation that is channels the spirit of the Fifth Dimension, XTC, Sly and the Family Stone, Bubblegum Music, and lots of Burt Bacharach!!" uh-huh. Cemented into my player. Owsley -- A most excellent s/t debut album. Pop is good to me, I tell ya. The Masticators -- Why wouldn't you listen to a band that "Cousin Oliver" is in? (See also: Martin Luther Lennon and Wonderboy) A little reminiscent of 60's girl groups at times. "You're The One I Wanna Love," in particular. Wilco -- Get your head out of the clouds if you haven't bought anything of theirs yet. Fountains of Wayne -- See above. Too smart and too fun not to love. Anyone musically inclined in the Finn family -- I could write a book. (I don't want to hear "You're already doing that!" :P) XTC -- Just fantastic, no matter the decade. "Wasp Star -- AV Vol. 2" coming soon! Sleater-Kinney -- We all know them, right? Liz Phair (mandatory Liz content) -- Eh, she's ok. Aimee Mann -- A list favorite! Well, to some. Jason Falkner -- I've run out of adjectives. Oh! JF is damn dreamy. Elton John ("Blue Moves" and preceding) The Beatles The Kinks And so on, and so on... I didn't wrap up as well as I wanted to. Hmm ... So yeah, that's all I wanted to say. It's a lot, I know. Thanks for taking the time to skim this, fellow music lovers. And thanks for those who still keep up the time honored tradition of passing on info. Nora ... who, if she weren't already herself, would be annoyed with her, for sure.
