Hey everyone, I was just wondering if anyone's heard from either Ginz or Sandra recently? The digests have been bouncing back from both of their addresses, and I'd really hate to have to unsub them. Hopefully they're both still around and are only having minor e-mail problems. If anyone knows what's going on with either of them, could you please let me know? Thanks, Jase ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 6 Apr 2000 03:50:10 EDT From: Juvenilia@aol.com Subject: Fidelity Hey people.... I have yet to see "High Fidelity", but with this 'possible' Liz appearance, I'm anxious to see for myself. If by chance it is her and she's not listed in the credits, this wouldn't be a first time. In fact, in the latest issue of People Weekly, "High Fidelity" is reviewed and they mention that Catherine Zeta Jones is in the movie in an uncredited cameo. So, it IS possible it could be Liz. I'll >be looking forward to seeing her and Stargazer Lily. Here are a few more details about Shalini Chatterjee... She used to be married to Scott Miller of the Loud Family (and before that, Game Theory). Mitch Easter isn't only producing Shalini, but is a guitarist in the band (for the record, he also produced the first two Loud Family albums and a lot of Game Theory stuff). Also, Shalini has released a CD, some singles and an EP as the leader of the band Vinyl Devotion. And to sort of swerve this into on-topic territory, Shalini certainly has some definite opinions about Liz's work, as does Scott Miller. Here's an excerpt of an interview from the May 1995 issue of Bucketful of Brains with the two of them (the interview took place more than a year before its publication, for the record): BOB: Okay, here's a trend since we last got together: The Breeders, Liz Phair, Belly, PJ Harvey and Aimee Mann. SCOTT: All females. I think they're all really terrific acts. And I think it's great that there are so many of them that it's getting cumbersome to treat them as this funny little minority market that you can get away with reviewing three of them under the heading New Albums by Women Artists. In fact, I don't think I have any kind of gender reaction at all. But I have vastly different reactions to each of the artists you mentioned. BOB: Well, let's talk about specifics. I know you're a big fan of Aimee Mann. What's so special about her music to you? SCOTT: That's one of those albums that's not carving out the brave new direction that rock is going to take in the next five years. But it's really smart, and it's got a lot of terrific melodies--and definitely some Chrissie Hynde influence in the vocal inflection. I like it a lot better than 'Til Tuesday. I never got into them, even the supposedly great latter days. But the first time I listened to the new one (Whatever), I thought it was sparkling. BOB: Okay, do you think the Breeders are the best new band in rock and roll? That's the party line in San Francisco. SCOTT: It's a fine album. "Cannonball" was dynamite, but I thought it was a little monochromatic and significantly overrated. SHALINI: I like the Breeders. It's always been harder for women to get signed because of the way they've traditionally been treated. I've had a lot of contact with local journalists in San Francisco, and most of them are narrow-minded. There was an article in the Chronicle recently that ended, "It's been a banner year for the gals"--really condescending. I haven't listened to the whole PJ Harvey album yet. I don't know what's wrong with me, but I can't get through it. SCOTT: Actually, that Breeders album is my number 15 of the year, so I didn't mean to say everyone's saying it's good, but it's not. 1993 was a very tough competition year, incidentally--the best year in rock, I think, in a very long time. SHALINI: I've got mixed feelings about Liz Phair. I don't like the fact that she can't play live. I've struggled for a long time, and it makes me a little bit jealous that she can't play her guitar in front of people while I slave away at guitar lessons. It makes me feel like doing my guitar solos with my eyes closed to never be like her. She looks at her guitar, but because her record is so successful, it doesn't matter to people that she plays like crap. He (pointing to Scott) loves her. SCOTT: I think Liz Phair is utterly brilliant. Without any question, Exile In Guyville is the best album in the last ten years, an album without weakness. Her singing has exactly the correct amount of understatement. She's technically a good singer. She doesn't miss notes. She doesn't over-use flourishes, but she's capable of doing them--vibrato and things like that. And I think the lyrics are far more effective than we have a right to expect these days. I mean, gone are the days when Bob Dylan albums made people think in inventive new ways about their lyrics. But this is an album chock-full of pithily worded observations, and on top of that, she's very literate--lots of literary and historical references. Impressive as hell. SHALINI: That's another reason I don't understand her success, since people today are into acting like ignorant slobs. Maybe she's fooled everybody, and they don't realize how literate she is. SCOTT: I don't know. She's got the word "blowjob" in there. Nobody's going to miss that. That's going to be grunge enough for some people, and that's why she's a great artist. She doesn't have an axe to grind in either respect. She's not trying to prove she's literate, and she's not trying to prove she's just a rocker, man. And later in the interview... BOB: How would you describe your songwriting influences? SHALINI: I'd have to give an influence credit to Liz Phair. She really doesn't care if a song's stupid. She'll just go with it. SCOTT: (chuckling) High praise indeed. SHALINI: It's because she's not self-conscious about music. That's what's great about making records. You're not suffocated unless you do it to yourself. Also, on the Loud Family site , there are lists of Scott's favorite records from each year. In 1993, _Exile_ was his top pick, _Whip-Smart_ was #3 for 1994, and _whitechocolatespaceegg_ took the top spot for 1998. If anyone's interested in checking out the Loud Family, I highly recommend both _Interbabe Concern_ (Nina Gordon fans take note: she contributes vocals to and has a co-writing credit on one song) and _Plants and Birds and Rocks and Things_. However, I will not be held responsible if they're not your cup of tea; I've taken shit for recommending them in the past on the list. All of their albums are fairly complex and take a while to sink in; the two I mentioned are their most accessible, in my opinion; your mileage will vary even more with the other ones likely. Hey, I know there are some fans, so I figured I would pass this info on.. The new Sinead O'Connor album is due out in June - it is called "Faith & Courage" and the first single is INCREDIBLE - called "No Man's Woman." It is a COMPLETELY rocking song - anyone who feard Sinead would be heading down the ole Gospel Oak path - is in for a REALLy sweet surprise!!!!!!! It's awesome... more like her old stuff - the cool-ass Sinead that we fell in love with in "Lion and the Cobra".. Also - I know there is at LEAST one other Bangles fan on here - the Band is completely back together (Vicki Peterson, Debbi Peterson, Susanna Hoffs and Michael Steele) and there is going to be a BRAND NEW full-length studio album slated for an August release. Also, there is talk of a "Rare Songs" ep coming out...nothing concrete yet on that yet - but the new album IS a sure thing....They plan on touring to promote the album as well... Also - from what I hear, the Bangles' new music is supposedly back in the style of their first full-length release "All Over The Place" (which I believe to be their best) - very rocking, 60's-esque music with lots of harmonizing vocals. If anyone has heard their new song "GET THE GIRL" from the AUstin Powers soundtrack, it sounds as if, so far - the girls are better than ever!!!!!!! anyway, Just passing through.. I wonder if he's providing keys for the new album? Anyways, I've always though that Liz's does NOT need a keyboardist. It still sounds strange hearing keys on some of the older songs and it really takes away from the guitars. I'd rather hear a full 2 guitar onslaught by Liz and Buddy, than the guitars being turned down a little so you can hear the keys.
