AAAAHAAAAAAahahahaaaaaaa...... oh....yeah... just as an aside, a couple years ago i thought i wanted to teach high school and i had to do some 60 hours of "observation" and in one of the schools the kids had to do some kind of poster presentation of someone they admire and this girl did hers on mariah carey and i, too, became very, very frightened for the future of this nation. rainbows and butterflies.... holy shit. i couldn't believe it. i decided not to become a teacher, BTW. > > > all this catpower talk has got me kinda curious. and brent said she's > coming to ATL soon...thinking about checking her out, which album should i > start with? > hey, you know she's originally from atlanta (now lives in NYC), so if you go to the show there'll be that "hometown crowd" thing workin'.... she's also another artist on the matador compilation and her stuff is thoroughly intriguing; her interpretation of "sea of love," for example, is highly original. her voice is real cool. i think she's a winner. her first album is called "moon pix" and then she's got a new "covers" album just out... i say go for it and get them both. but, hey, didn't someone on this list say she had a live-show freak-out in NYC? is this a chronic thing or is she OK live? wondrin' dp ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 5 Apr 2000 08:28:58 -0400 From: "Henry, Gregory" Subject: More on Cat Power Actually, Cat Power has more than two records out -- "Myra Lee," "Dear Sir" and "What would the community think" are the only ones that come to my mind, but there may be even more. "Moon Pix" is the one to get, though. She broke out of her indie folk cocoon thing big time on that record. "The covers record" is pretty neat-o, too. Live, she's amazing. I was at a show, though, where she kept critiquing the sound of her voice really sadly. It prompted audience members to call out things like "No -- you sound great!" and "Don't stop singing, please!" Eventually, this being New York City, they kinda turned on her -- one person yelled out "Lighten up!" and she buried her face in her hands and said, "That's what HE said." A friend told me he saw her play a sold-out show at the Bowery Ballroom where she was so bummed by her guitar sound that she climbed off the stage into the audience and lay facedown on the floor for a significant amount of time. Fans gathered around her and told her it was okay, to keep going. That was the night that the Cat Power band quit. She says she's suicidal. Her boyfriend is like 18 (she's in her late 20s, I believe). Her real name is Chan Marshall. She often shows the silent film "The passion of Joan of Arc" while she plays her shows. That's all I know about Cat Power. But definitely get "Moon Pix." And be nice to her if you see her live, 'cause she seems like a very tortured woman. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 05 Apr 2000 08:48:31 EDT From: "Chris Camboni" Subject: the "F" word, me being obvious, desert picks Hey, I sort of skim through the digest looking for interesting bits (it's my generation and their lack of attention spans, what can I say?) Anyway, my apologies if this has been mentioned before. My girlfriend and I were talking last night about the mixed tape I gave her for her birthday and Liz's song Chopsticks. Well, we all know she says the dreaded "f word" in it, but I have always been impressed that Liz uses the word in a non-offensive way. It's rather sensual actually ;) So along the lines of chopsticks/ Whip Smart... I'm here to tell you guys what a great album it is. I know you already knew that, but hey, it took me awhile. I got hooked with WSE when it first came out and when I finally found Whip Smart at one of the campus stores, I wasn't too impressed. But it's been in my cd player forever now, and I'm thoroughly enjoying it. (But everyone already knew it was great) Now my desert picks: 5 songs: 1)Fantasize ~Liz 2)Soul Kitchen ~The Doors 3)You Look So Fine ~Garbage 4)Jurassitol ~Filter 5)Rags to Rags ~The Eels One book: I Am Third ~Gayle Sayers Luxury Item: A cd player... how the hell else can I play the songs? ~Chris ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 5 Apr 2000 07:14:18 -0700 (PDT) From: Craig King Subject: thread, high fidelity, and creativity >>Another thread anyone? Artists you'd like to see covering a Liz song?<< I'll probably get flack for this one, but I don't care: Stone Temple Pilots - "Stratford-On-Guy" Juliana Hatfield - "Supernova" Aimee Mann - "Freak of Nature" I agree with Katie too about Tom Petty providing the voice of Henry. Saw High Fidelity yesterday, and I'm convinced that was Liz in the movie at the dinner party. It looked exactly like her, and sounded like her too. It's either Liz or a damn good look-alike. I didn't see her name in the credits, so it probably wasn't her, but I'm telling you it was!!!! :) Either way it was a great movie and I highly recommend it. If you think artists lose their creativity as they get older, then somebody better tell that to Bob Dylan and Tom Petty. They haven't lost a step. I think Liz is as creative as ever and I think she'll do just fine in that respect as she gets older. She's just too damn good not to. Hey everyone. This is from rollingstone.com: "Q: You mentioned earlier that your songs are actually autobiographical. So, is "Polyester Bride" about a dalliance with a famous man? A: It's all part of this group that we were hanging out with back then. And some of them were in the John Cusack group, so there was that sense that they were kind of a little more either famous or close to famous. It was like a celebrity group. It's also about searching out people that are more fabulous than you. It's really making fun of myself and my state of mind back then because I was such a little snot. And there really is a bartender Henry. He was looking at me like, "Are you really gonna waste your life with this or are you gonna use your mind to do something useful?" " Just thought you'd like to know that, so maybe it really was Liz in that dinner scene. I haven't seen the movie so I don't know, but they were allegedly pretty good friends. I hate that site, but someone played a really mean April Fool's joke on me telling me that REM broke up. So I figured the only place to find out the real truth was on Mtv online. It's very sad about Luscious Jackson, though. Jen You're legally allowed to drink now so we figured the best thing for you was a car.
