Sorry, no Liz content... but this in response to Dana's post about Solex. I don't know VERY much about her, but her real name is Elisabeth Esselink and she began making music under the name "Solex" after working in a record store for many years. Her sound is bizarre, but very humorous. She's from the UK so I'm not sure how known she is there. I do know she recently toured with Cibo Matto. In addition to some of titles Dana mentioned, there is one song I love: "That's What You Get With People Like That On Cruises Like These." Pure hysteria. Sometimes, Robbie "I won a cruise. I'm on the loose. Jump in a pool with lots of booze." --SOLEX > Date: Fri, 31 Mar 2000 19:24:11 -0800 > From: "Dana Polachowski" > Subject: gimme solex!! > > ok, not to change the subject, but... i've got this CD stuck in my player > and i can't get it out!!--it's called "pick up" and it's by a wacky dutch > girl who calls herself "solex." i got turned onto her when i picked up the > "everything is nice" matador compilation in november last year. actually, > her real name is elisabeth esselink. she makes groovy sounds come out of > machines. and the song titles are the first things to make me laugh out loud > since i picked up a slice of vinyl touting "vicar in a tutu." listen to > these: "escargot!" What with all the discussion about Mary Timony's debut solo album, I cannot help but notice that I do not own this album. Not that I don't want to mind you, but I have been to every retailer in the tri-state area, and every single one not only doesn't carry it, but also swears up and down that IT DOESN'T EXIST YET! What the dilly yo? ....Sorry. Couldn't resist. I'm stuck in a 1997 time warp. Latuh. Morgan PS......If "mountains" truly does suck, lemme know before I go to any great lengths to get my hands on it! ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 1 Apr 2000 11:49:01 EST From: BeeFly27@aol.com Subject: stuck on an island Hey. Solex has two damn fine albums, and everyone should buy them. Her first one is called "Solex vs. the Hitmeister", and it's even more cartoony than "Pick Up." She's got a web-site which shouldn't be too hard to find, with a lot of interviews and other crap. Her main deal is she creates all her songs from samples, and her own drumming and vocals. The rest comes from unbought records from her second hand record store, or from bootlegged live songs (which is what she used for the second album). Yet another fine album put out by Matador. -Malmuud ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 1 Apr 2000 20:53:42 EST From: AllIsFullOfDan@aol.com Subject: future label... About the future label bit from my Catpower post, I'm a singer/songwriter/guitarist, and have been told by many that I have a knack for writing/performing groovy songs, so this summer I'm doing the demo/tour thing with a hopeful home at Matador records. Although I could probably get signed to a bigger label, I want to keep it indie. I'm a solo by the way, no band for me, and that's how I want to keep it! I probably sound like I'm pulling all of this out of my ass, but oh well. :-) Bye!
