I love Catpower. I am a brand new fan, and I saw her perform a week ago at Maxwell's in Hoboken, front row. :) She was excellent. As for the covers, she did "The Rose", and "Satisfaction", but were hardly recognizable. I don't know how good the CD is though. She is also on Matador, Liz's original label, and hopefully my future label! - -Dan ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 31 Mar 2000 04:24:19 PST From: "Chipko Arnold" Subject: blown to smithereens and more >Next big concert for me is Pat DiNizio at a friend's house up the >road. >Anyone on this list catch any of his stops on this his Living >Room Couch >tour? > >Mikey C >Va Beach Lucky pup!!! I loved the Smithereens and Pat's solo album was pretty fine. Shouldn't be jealous though as i was in a small room with Vic Chesnutt yesterday as he banged out a few tunes! On to the latest reccomendation from me... LAUREN HOFFMAN. She's from VA., but has been all around the states and seems to know everyone, even though she's a youngster. Saw her the other night at a tiny London venue and she was wonderful. Check out her From The Blue House album, on her own Free Union album. I saw them recently when they stopped by champaign. the singer's voice reminded me of macy gray a little, not so scratchy, but similar styles. and I remember the music brought to mind mazzy star. I was somewhat impaired that night, so I'm unable to make any fair judgments on how much I liked them, but they are worth checking out. >Anyone in Nashville go to the Yo La Tengo show? speaking of yo la tengo, what kind of music are they? they are coming to champaign soon and I thought about checking them out, because I have heard them mentioned here before. and for all the aimee fans: she got mentioned in the april playboy in the tip sheet section of afterhours (or whatever they call it now, they changed up the format recently). anyway, it's a short selection of things you might find interesting, and they mention aimee's being featured on the magnolia soundtrack and that she is releasing her new album on her own after being dumped by her label. short and sweet. shelly, glad you got juvenilia. to everyone I am making copies of girlysounds for, I'm getting finished with them bit by bit, so be looking for an e-mail about it in the next few days. jake ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 31 Mar 2000 06:45:15 -0800 (PST) From: dream Subject: looking for liz - philippines hi, i just recently subscribed to the list. am just wondering if there are other members who are staying in the philippines, and maybe you have "the girly tapes" too...i'd want to have a copy.... __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? That and "Moon Pix." I was listening to The Covers Record last night for the second night in a row, and it's truly amazing, especially the Stones and Lou Reed covers. It's pretty much just Chan Marshall and her guitar, but it's recorded very beautifully, and I think it's the best "covers" record I possess. Just be prepared to mellow out! Chan Marshall's ability to make every song one of her own is worth the listen. Her cover of "I can't get no satisfaction" tells the whole story. This song is hers when she is done, the Stones would never recognize it. (This is a good thing) Unlike S. Colvin this covers record is in due time and not a weak attempt to make a new album. This album has been quite shielded from the critics, while Mary Timony's (Helium) new album has been attacked quite harshly. Both in my opinion are terrific pieces of work. Chan is traveling to support the new album, unfortunately she is alone and without the entire band, but a show not to miss nonetheless. bye Brent "I haven't stopped vomitting since I started working in this office!" IMHO, the new Mary Timony record has been quite fairly dissed by the critics. I'm a big Helium fan, but this record is crazy. Self-indulgent noodling is how I would describe it. But her lyrics are typically fantastic. Gregory ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 31 Mar 2000 10:50:37 PST From: "M.L. But i am going to see them on the 18th in a small venue. Thought it would be interesting.
